Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Leigh, your variation should work if you approach it with your usual care and skill. I did consider suggesting something similar also but it seemed like a lot of extra work. Note to self: Leigh ain't afraid of work. :lol

You've already spotted that clay partitions would be heavy and likely to peel a small strip of silicone off the sculpt, so yes, a freestanding support would be needed.

Don't forget to vaseline the strip wherever your final mould silicone could come into contact with it, and keep the clay close to its edge - since any projection of this material into the 'mould space' will effectively form a gully around the edge of your mould half.

Errrr probably kinda obvious I know, but when you're working hell for leather and juggling competing considerations, it's not hard to lose track. :)

A real Masterpiece indeed !!

To me THIS is THE ALIEN !!! It just has that certain "something special" and very distinctive original Giger Alien Look, which i never have seen on any replica before!
It looks so menacing, and true to the movie original.

I have changed my collection prioritys many years ago and got rid of all lifesize busts. in fact i sold all my lifesize alien busts.
but now i´m dreaming of having one again.

Leigh, one thing to keep in mind is that most silicones adhere to themselves very well. What this means is that you can put off the construction of partitions until after the whole sculpt is safely jacketed in a layer or two of rubber.

That is, you give the sculpt one or two coats of brush-on silicone all over to create a skin, then build your first set of partitions on top of that. Build up the rest of the layers of silicone against those partitions for one half of the mould (third, whatever) then when set remove the partitions, vaseline the edges of the first mould half - being very sure to get NO vaseline where you want silicone to adhere - and build up the other half of the mould.

Once all that's done, build the partitions for the glass jacket and make that.

When you come to pull it all apart, most of your mould separates along the partition line - peel the edges apart, and where it all meets the first skin you just cut the rest of the way down to the sculpt with an X-acto. You may mess up the sculpt a little at this point but it hardly matters.

When you see a cast piece that has flashing along the mould line which resembles a cut through rubber, it's because it's been done this way - the whole piece plonked into rubber, and the mould halves cut apart later on, to avoid claying up and casting the piece in two stages to save time or damage to the master.

Disclaimer: I'm just a hobbyist, every so often I still bugger up a mould, etc. If you can get a pro on board then do!!

Holy Crud! This is a great approach! You'd get a wonderfully tight seam with no chance of disturbing the master with parting walls directly touching the sculpture.

Learn something new and helpful everyday!

Thanks Nick. One caveat is that the clay itself can leave oils; when you remove the partition any residue might prevent good silicone adhesion where you *do* want it to stick. Best to clean thoroughly with a solvent or detergent.

congrats leigh! been following since day 1, I know I haven't commented in a while (still been watching though just a little quiet these days haha) but it's really amazing to see where you've taken this from just that mere bunch of Styrofoam. this is one of the best alien sculptures to date hands down. Keep up the great work I really look forward to seeing what you decide on for the casting process.

Although not a fan of the films......heresy I know, I just want to add my congratulations on a truly beautiful piece. The detail on the tubes and pipes, the mix of organic and inorganic and the overall shape is excellent.

Thank you for sharing and I hope all goes well with the moulding
