Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

This is absolutely outstanding work Leigh! I am stunned by your quality! Keep it up!

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Leigh, everything you do, you approach with thought and patience and the results show. Bob is stunning and your first attempt at moulding him is staggering. Its really not possible to praise you enough. This is mind blowing stuff to a chap that has to mold one small piece and is worried about it, having never moulded anything...but you went and moulded BOB!

This is just Ridiculous.

Cannot wait for the next installement.

AMAZING job on this leigh... Such a great impact piece, beautiful executed!! :thumbsup

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

If you'd ever be interested in having this 3D scanned and being able to produce scaled version, give me a shout. And thanks for the offer... if mine shatters I'd be thrilled to be able to walk around with a Bob the Alien jaw instead! :)

Thanks for the kind words & support guy's :)

I hardly touched him over the weekend but today I've been preparing for the next mould part.
I was hoping to get the rubber done today but it looks like its going to be tomorrow now or I'll be up all night.

Here's some pic's:

I did quickly knock up that wooden frame to support him on over the weekend though :)

The prep work and detail on the molding process is insane and a masterpiece in of itself. Amazing job! Thanks for sharing all of the details pics as you go along it's a great reference for anyone doing castings ... of course you have set the bar pretty high :lol

Thank you mate :)

I just hope all this prep is worth it & the casts come out OK, I've still got a lot to learn :)

I'll be putting the rubber on in the next couple of hours, if anybody spots anything that doesn't look like it'll work... Please let me know! :)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

It's all looking very practical to me. :thumbsup

I do think you're gonna need that steel frame, though! :lol

Good to go it is then :D

Steel roto frame? :D yeh I'll tackle that one when I get there, right now I'm charged up on caffeine, focussed & ready to go :devil

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Hahaha! You're in "the zone". It's bloody great when you get that flow thing going.

Another big trick will be getting to the same place while you're actually running the mould. If you can, you're golden.

Yeah, roto frame. Don't worry about it now, to be sure. But you won't believe how rapidly that few kilos will wear you out while hand-rotoing, even if you lift regularly. It's going to end up as about what, eight or nine kilos? That'll feel like two hundred after ten minutes of rolling it. :lol

I would be all over that.

Not to mention inconsistency in the thickness of the castings.

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

I wouldn't worry about Leigh's roto casting... knowing him he'll build something that turns at all the angles, at exactly the right speed to coat the inside of the mould with exactly 3.82mm thickness of resin and will be geared so that it can be powered by his pet mouse running around its play wheel, and not only that... it will look like it has been 3D designed and printed and smoothed by 100 or so of Santa's helpers who are currently out of work at the moment ;)

:lol I cant do the pet mouse thing but I wonder if I could employ the cats somehow?? ooh, maybe a toy mouse? Hmmmm
I need a "Rubs chin" smiley

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

That's the rubber sorted for this side.
14 hours I spent on that! including drying times between coats & it went by so quick :eek

Just brilliant. Sometimes (well, most times) when I check out the updates on this thread I think Leigh is having a go at us with all the 'Ive never done this before" bit :) Truly inspiring.

You missed THIS? How did you miss this? :lol

Thanks for the advice. Four small central pieces I made them with the polyurethane which is much more moldable polystyrene. The ribs will make the coating of hollow tubes with DAS. But the difficult parts are the face and the transparent dome. Would you sell me the transparent dome? It is in scale 1? How long is it?:)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Thanks Guy's :)

daredevil665, I think your doing a superb job on your own there :) :thumbsup

Right, it seems like this is taking ages &... well...it is! :)

I'm letting everything cure properly before moving on.

I've got this part of the Jacket done, I can now start on the next bit:

This has come out nice & strong, real thick on the edges :)
