Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien)

Incredible molding process! Its awesome to watch and learn.

I keep dropping my jaw from what I'm seeing. Awesome.

Thanks man :) I can send you a jaw if yours breaks ;)

Thank you :) Though, I might not be the best person to learn from with my limited experience :)

I was going to make up the GRP jacket yesterday but the bleedin cat went missing for 16 hours! caused me a lot of stress :rolleyes
Little sod got herself trapped in a derelict building. Back & safe now & very clingy today :D

So I did it this morning instead :)

Here's just before, got everything masked up & ready to go:

And here's after:

Pongin stuff!!

Still, that's all done now, so I can rip all that cardboard off in a while & flip it over ready to start on the next bit :)
I decided not to put pieces wood onto it, it would have made it even more difficult to rotate.

:)

Hallo,
I apologize in advance for my English. I use a translator and I do not know if the translation is correct. Your Alien is Beautiful and very complex. I'm making one myself full 1:1 scale, but are still backward and then I have never worked with polystyrene, but only with clay. Your building will be very useful to carry out the details of my. Use modeling clay to make yourself the details?

best regards

I'd say there is a lot we could learn from a natural such as yourself, everthing you turn your hand to is top notch, even if it is the first time. Cleanest first mould I've ever seen, and very well thought out ;)

What Canobi said. I half-arse everything myself...I tune into this thread every time I want a megadose of things being done PROPERLY. :lol

I mean look at that table setup. Holy crap!

How many layers of glass did you put on, Leigh?

Thank you for the kind words daredevil665 :) I used Newplast oil based clay, it has no sulphur.
Your doing an Excellent job with the polystyrene! your work looks very good :)
You should start a thread showing your work on your Alien.
Welcome to The RPF :)

Thanks man :) I put quite a lot of glass on there & its pretty thick, but the flange either side in the middle has come out a little too thin. I must have pushed the glass away from the edge while shaping it up, so I may have to thicken those area's up a bit more.

I just hope I can add a bit more glass without distorting the flange due to shrinkage :unsure

Waiting in anticipation to see more updates Leigh :)

Thank you :)

Your polystyrene or polyurethane foam is? With which you work better? I was thinking of covering the statue with raw fiberglass and synthetic gypsum and then do the details smoothed with putty for glass hard (because it is cheap € 2 /kg) and then coated with plaster-free synthetic fiber. I'll do a little test first. ;)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Test your fiberglass on a spare piece of foam first! it might melt the foam. I used insulation foam, I think it was urethane & I sealed it with PVA glue :)

Add that extra glass in the middle before you do anything else, no matter how tempted you might be to press on. Should be fine. You could slightly under-catalyse the resin for a slow setting time, I'm not sure it would retard the ultimate shrinkage but it won't hurt.

I bought a bag of chopped glass strand, I think I'll mix that up with some resin to make a paste & spread it on the thinner area's to beef them up & I'll use the minimum required activator. Doing it that way should build the thin area's up nice & quickly & they'll be strong :)

The Jacket has come out very sturdy & strong with virtually no flex which is good, I'd just prefer a little more thickness to the flange in places.

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

That worked a treat! :)

It's all cured now, I've trimmed up the edges, washed it down, put it back on & flipped it over:

I need to fill the bubbles that formed in the jacket flange against the edge of the rubber, otherwise its all good to go for the next part :)

It must be nerve racking to move all that soft clay around.

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Looks great!

Did you separate the silicone and the sculpt? If so then the 'seal' to the surface is broken. Silicone has an amazingly low surface tension, so despite its high viscosity it wicks into invisibly small gaps. Because it sticks so well to itself, the last thing you want is the next half of the mould invading the first half; it will form thin 'blotches' along the seam line.

If you did remove the sculpt, I'd recommend taking it out again and greasing up not just the joining flange but also inside the sculpt/casting area itself for a couple of inches, just in case. Could save grief later!

I've enjoyed every minute of this build. Such fun to see it from start, to finish, to mold-making. A true pleasure. Great work.

Very Very cool. Cant wait to see more

Thank you :)

Its a bit of a worry I must admit but there are quite a few hard area's, its also kind of heavy. With the first mould part & its jacket fitted its a bit easier to handle & position :)

Right, I didn't remove it completely but I did break the seal around the edge.
I had the same thing with the Jaw mould & I predicted what could have happened on that one.
To re-seal the jaw mould I brushed some petroleum jelly about 1/2" down between the mould & the master & then gently pushed it closed again, I then wiped away most of the excess that squeezed out. With a brush I then filled any small gaps with the jelly. The jelly also kind of stuck it back down, as a result I didn't get any seepage. I'm hoping this method will work with this mould, although its quite a bit bigger.

What do you think? :)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Yes mate you nailed it. Maybe go a little bit further in this time as it is a much bigger mould, but it is overkill really. Better safe than sorry and all that stuff.

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Sculpting finished page 45

Will do :)
Thanks for mentioning it! It could have been a costly mistake if you hadn't said something & I'd overlooked it, for the benefit of others reading as well :thumbsup
