Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien)

If you go by the straight line method you used, mine is 34" long.

Thanks for that :lol You really had me worried there for a while :) (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

When I researched the size all I could find in reference to the length of the head was roughly 36 inches, so I decided to go for 900mm.

That´s exact! ;)

That is good to know, thanks :)

A little update:
I've not been able to put the hours in lately, but I've managed to squeeze a few in on Bob.

I've made the base a little bigger & added some convoluted pipe, theres still alot more to do on the base though.
I've made up the other pauldron in foam & fitted it & I've started laying up his left hand side with clay:

Its all still just roughed out at the moment. Once I'm happy with the shapes I'll smooth it all off & add some texture here n there :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again....that it pure beauty. The lines are so smooth...and perfect! I'm amazed at the tiny base supporting such a monsterous beast! I LOVE watching this thread - thank you!!

Thank you for the kind words guy's :)

Well, I've been busy this afternoon & I've got all the clay on the left hand side done today :D but its very rough ATM.
Everything is in place & roughly shaped up, so tomorrow I can start smoothing stuff down a bit.

Everything is looking awesome! For a moment, with those last pictures, I'd thought something had went very wrong! It looks as though the heads been beaten off XD

Glad to see the bust taking such great shape :D

I did always like the 1:4 scale bust that came out a while back. Has a Victorian mounted specimen look to it. Very clean and museum-like.

I have a photo somewhere in my archives of an original / screenused alien head displayed on the same kind of base... in a german (iirc) museum !

LOVE that base !

:love

PS : Great work once again Leigh, it's been a while since I hadn't visited this thread and I must say I wasn't disappointed to discover your latest progress pics... WOW !!! Bravo sir !

:cool

Wow, this is just amazing work, truly impressed! I love the way you've handled the base.

I can't believe I have missed this build but I am glad I can just flip through and read it from start to present state.

I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY by your talent and skillfull eye. Everything you have done is simply gorgeous!

Thanks for the kind words guy's :)

Sorry for the lack of updates lately, for one I've been busy doing other things & two I'm struggling a bit at the moment with the base.

I've been trying to do something interesting with the base, with some nice Gigerish detail but I'm not sure I'm on the right track :confused

I'm looking to you guy's again for help/critisism, I cant quite decide whether I'm going a little over the top with features on the base & I'm struggling with getting my head round it.

My goal was to have an interesting base that follows the theme of Giger's work, so it needs to work well with the style of the Alien & the biomechanical look. I dont mind it being heavily featured if it works, if you get me.

Anyhoo some pic's:

If I'm to carry on from here with this as it is then there will be more detail in the form of different guages of wire placed in various area's a bit like the wire work on the derelict.
What do you think??

Leigh, when you started this, carving shapes from insulation foam and saying you had no sculpting experience, I thought it was an unusual way to begin and a fairly difficult subject for a first bust. The first set of pictures looked good though, and I was interested to see how it went. As time as gone on you have proved yourself to be a resourceful artist with a critical eye for detail and what looks good. I think what you have achieved here is just astounding to say the least.

As for the base? I think it's excellent and can't wait to see the derilict wire work you are going to apply.

It looks great even now, so when it's finished, it's going to be stunning.

Thank you :)
Although as you say this was probably a bit of a big project for a first timer & I've realised that :) I've enjoyed making this upto detailing the base. I think my problem is I'm having to make it up rather than just copying which I'm struggling with a bit & I'm not enjoying it as much, however my intention is to get the base finished before going back to finish Bob.

I may yet consider seeing if I can get two tubes on him whilst keeping the stand & base set up. I dont really think it'll work but I'll see if I can make it work. One of the biggest problems with the tubes is that they're mounted much lower on the back for the Giger Alien than they are on the Winston/Aliens version.

We'll see :)

I take it you read my post when I mentioned the tubes. After I posted, I went back a few pages and saw you had made your decision, so I took it out.

Just trust your own instincts, Leigh, so far they haven't put you wrong. :)
