Blade Runner Vid-Phon

Hi all,

There's a great thread going on over at propsummit where a couple of people are kicking around the idea of building up a reasonable repro of the vid-phon.

I'm trying to modify a vid-phon faceplate I had done a while back, and I'm looking for source material.

Apparently, there was a CD that came out of Japan a while back called the "Vid-Phon Report" that included a bunch of shots of one of the actual props. Does any one have it, and if so, are you willing to sell or share it?

Thanks.

Also to add to this, I am curious to whether or not there is info on the Vid Phon in the Spinner Dokuhon book as well?

I hope we can crank something out. I am looking for any and all information that people might have on sizes... I think we are pretty close on the faceplate as Ben mentioned... just trying to nail down the body.

I think this could be a lot of fun indeed.

the main thing we seem to be missing so far is an actual size of the Vid Phon. We only have guesses at this point. I know there are blue prints out there as well as the actual cases that Rich Coyle took the photo of at modern props and the one from the Vid Phon report. If we can figure out the size of the video screen since the same one was used as part of the VK supposedly. We might be able to extrapolate the rest of the dimensions more accurately.

I believe the video screen in the Vid Phon is actually a rear-projection screen.

I'd be happy to get you some screencaps.

I'm also rather curious abot the details of the phones and the weird stickers on them (also found around the set).

:)

They did in 2001 (well before the small color screens were common), but there was nothing behind the vid phon so I doubt it highly. I am pretty sure it was a closed loop video tape. I have to look back at Nick's thread because the same moniter was used for the spinner and the fish lady screen.

I wish I had the blade runner sketchbook right now... that would be nice... at least some scans on pages referring to the vid phone and its design.

Right now I keep going back and forth between... is it 24 inches high or 30 inches high, what is the circumference of this piece... all of those fun measurement questions...

We know the shape, no issues there, it just comes down to the exact size. These projects really are the most fun.

I have the sketchbook and it has nothing on the Vid Phon design at all. Instead it has some Syd Mead sketches on a holographic messaging recorder (answering machine). It does have some graphics in back that the sticker graffitti was made from.

I checked my Dohukon book, and nothing on the Vid-Phone in there..

I could have sworn someone created a faux Vid-Phone face with all of the grafitti and stickers a while back... I'm pretty sure it was before my current board name... (Hehehe wish I could have remembered my old one...)

I don't know, the Bladerunner mafia is kinda touchy about people showing off Pics of the Props. ;)

There is no such thing as the Blade Runner Mafia, The Blade Runner Illuminati on the other hand is very real :confused

I may be posting up the the scan from the sketchbook here very soon at Propsummit. Any sceencaps of course would be very appreciated especially if they are High Def. I am hoping to see several versions of the Vid Phons here very soon. Now we will have a place to stick our our Vid Phon cards too, other than...ummmm...yeah :)

Here's a vid-phon faceplate, updated using some low-res images of the info in the "vid-phon" report.

If anyone knows of any details that need to be added / fixed - chime in.

Here's my 2 cents. This was scanned from photo and as such doesn't hold a lot of detail when blown up. but it's better than the magazine scan.

Count the Vid Phons.

One in the booth on the corner near Leon's hotel.
Two in the front of The Snake Pit.
One in the hallway at the back of The Snake Pit (Zhora passes in front of it as Deckard says "Excuse me, Miss Salome—").
One in Zhora's room.
One outside The Snake Pit, at the stage door.

I've grabbed the caps now...

Whitefall, the number pad and 'start' & 'stop' font is not the same as the one you're using (Eras Bold?).

The Vid Phon Report pics show good details.

Also, there is a fine horizontal line pattern in the light-up "VID-PHON" panel (the one with the bell logo).

As far as making the shell goes, fiberglass or vacformed plastic are other possibilities.

Cool. Thank you. I seem to be getting contradictory data, so I need to extrapolate it. Translation... I am still confused about the size so I need to think about it and sketch it out.
