Best and Worst Comic Book Movie/ tv show Costumes

Best (and still unbeatable compared to other supermen)

Worst: (See what I mean?)

There's no such thing as motorcross.

But if you mean motocross, well, that's still wrong.

Well, excuse me for the misspelling, it still looks horrible whatever it's supposed to be. It doesn't have the feel/look of a batsuit at all, except for the cowl.

All the Daredevils were pretty bad. But give him a break, he's blind.

Does cgi count? I never liked the cgi Hulks. 'Hulk not bodybuilder! Hulk is Hulk, puny director!!' And The Abomination was now Big Muscle Ugly Guy.

KickAss' Big Daddy was quite different than the comic, but was perfect for what he wanted, an unbelievable look. 'batman took your drugs'.

batman can finally turn his head and make it more believable that he could actually kick some-ones butt without a stiff neck....

...and still look bland an boring? Again, it wasn't really a bad costume, it was just remarkably unremarkable.

While it was recognizable as Batman, it looked like a very plain, not-very-thought-out Batman. No character, no style, no "oomph." I'm not sure which version of which costume he wore during the Joker interrogation scene in Dark Knight - but, man that head was bulbous... and the design throughout the body and especially the legs looked funky and did it really need to be two-tone?

Best (IMO):

Tobey Spiderman Suit- it's well translated from the comic books. It's not exact... it's more detailed. It's actually cloth.

Batman '89- I love the look of this suit. It's all black and aside from being rubber, all the outlines match Batman. It has an organic armor feel to it. The only bad aspect of it was that it was the first time it had been done. It was difficult to move in and that was obvious at times.

Joker '89- While the pants were an odd choice, everything else about this costume screams Joker to me. There were actually several different variations seen in the movie... all worked very well to me. The make-up was another thing that worked amazingly well to me. The prosthetics were subtle enough to make people wonder if he was really just smiling all the time, but still gave Jack slightly more elongated features. The white make-up is subtly highlighted wonderfully.

Worst (IMO):

The Dark Knight Batman- sorry... I just don't like it. I don't recognize the shape of Batman or a bat. It's more robotic than anything else... and I don't get "robot" out of "bat" or "man." The cape doesn't give the impression of wings like earlier versions or the comic books. It looks like cloth... more like Darth Vader should be wearing it. I had high hopes that after not liking the "Begins" version that they'd give us something sleeker in the next film. Instead, they went the opposite direction. Yes, it's more agile than anything that came before... but it's ugly... and not Batman.

Batman Forever Riddler- not the suit... but those friggin' tights. Particularly at the end... the white one with all the sequins on it, and his hair is all up and ridiculous looking. He looks like the love child of Marilyn Manson and Syndrome, dipped in glitter.

Halle Berry's Catwoman- What was that stupid movie supposed to be anyway? I won't even bother critiquing it. Here's a picture:

You can pick and choose the worst from any of these as well:

He looks like Batman to me.

For all I care, he could be dressed in that Adam West one... as long as it was the same movie.

In that one shot... that was obviously shot with a very, very long and specially designed cape for specifically that one shot.

I didn't say I didn't like the movie. I didn't like the costume. I didn't like the tumbler either... but that's a discussion for a different thread.

I loved the Crow costume for Brandon Lee. Also agree with JetBeetle on the Ultraman...looks even color with his cape. lol

Nicholas Hammond's spidey suit is more of a true translation of the comic than the dark plastic shell head Toby model. Hell - the Electric Company spidey suit was better than the movie one. But i hated all the designs for the costumes in the Raimi films - from Green Goblin to Venom.

Well said. I mentioned Robocop in one of my posts, but I think I ended up deleting as I couldn't make the statement I wanted to with it.

Generally, I'm not a fan of literal translations from comics to film, some things that look amazing in 70s and 80s comics, just do not work in modern cinema, IMO. The new pic of Magneto's helmet in First Class seems to be a fine example of this.

However, I really appriciate when people try to stick to the established "look" of a character/costume, but translate it into "reality" . I think the best example of this is the Birds of Prey Batgirl

Batgirl_-_BOP_02.jpg

While not perfect, and not really the way I would pitch it, I think this is a damned fine attempt at a "comic" costume in the "real" world.

I'm still waiting for a brave designer to dress Batman in grey kevlar and canvas, and maybe figure out a way to white out the eyes of the cowl, so that he doesn't have to apply his mascara and eye shadow while Gordon is freezing his backside off is waiting by the signal.

I REALLY don't like the scene at the end of Batman Returns, when Bats takes of his cowl in front of Catwoman. One second he's got his eye make up on inside the mask, the next it's all gone, just so he doesn't have the Panda eyes when he takes it off. Sloppy, and annoying.

EDIT: Here's the Youtube link to the scene, watch from 2.10

^it is pretty close to being perfect.....dina meyer made the perfect barbara gordon....she was the only reason why i liked the show

mmm Dina Meyer... Yeah I'll agree that her Batgirl outfit is great, shame we didn't see a lot of it.

Yeah, that really was a good Batgirl costume.

Aside from the fact that the Shumacher (sp?) Batman and Robin movie was crap, I thought the Batgirl costume was great except the lack of a proper bat-cowl ruined it. Did they use that as a basis for the Birds of Prey Batgirl?

I'm really feeling nostalgic for the old Captain Marvel series and the Nicholas Hammond Spider-Man. I grew up watching those.

I can't believe the Nicholas Hammond Spider-Man series has never been released on DVD except for bootlegs you see at conventions. They've released practically everything else, why won't they release that? I loved that costume. I think my "perfect" Spidey costume would be a combination of that design with some minor updating such as the dye-sublimation printed fabric from the Raimi suit but without the Raimi-style super-thick raised web design.

They released the old Isis series but if they released the Captain Marvel/Shazam series, I can't find it.

And when are they going to release ElectraWoman and DynaGirl on DVD for that matter? :p

Dualedge -- to look at the details on the Batgirl costume for the Schumacher film, I think it's the same costume design, just without a big yellow batsign on the chest.

Also, I notice a distinct lack of nipples. Sexism, I say!
