Backbone (Slow) Pred Build, Wip

Your design looks amazing bro. Really love the hammered metal look. How did you get that look? Really love how you incorporated the ancient desing in there as well.

Thank you, I really appreciate your guys compliments. I got this texture after some experimenting. I used one of the plugs for a DVD player. I don't remember the plug name but there are 3 of them, Red yellow and white, and they have this little rounded tip that I stippled over and over again on the clay. It's a little time consuming but it leaves a nice texture.

Turns I tried it small scale and those tubes of silicone work great as a molding material, and for 3 bucks a tube it's worth it. As promised, here's my baby in her second coat :)

EDIT: I took a picture of the plug thing for ya

I used 6 tubes of silicone, and it was a little thin for a mold. But it's fine, I cut up an old t shirt and soaked the strips in plaster for the mother mold. After a couple of layers it's strong and decently light. Lighter than my mask mold for sure lol.

I got some fiberglass Matt because I find it easier
To use. For some unknown mistake of mine the resin hardened within minutes of pouring the face. The dome came out fine, but the stuff gelled almost immediately in the middle of the face. The cheeks are now super thin and without any fiberglass and the face around the brow and nose is super thick :/ I'll pick up some more resin tomorrow and Finnish it. No big deal, I just won't get a pull out till tomorrow night.

It gelled because you mixed up to much hardner. I've had my best results mixing up about 6 oz.s at a time with about 15 drops of hardner. Fiberglass resin will gel fast if you keep it in the cup you mix it in. The more mass the faster it will get hot. I like to use a cookie sheet and place a layer of tin foil on it. Once you mix your resin pour it out onto the sheet. The thinner it spreads out the longer it will take to gel. It takes a little practice not to have it gel on you. Keep up the great work. Oh if the resin sits in the heat like a hot garage it will gel faster also. Some people actually regrig it.

Yup, I used way to much hardener then. The bottle says to use 10 drops per fluid oz. I was mixing 8 oz at a time. Well, thanks man. You guys have way more experience than me with these things. Off to the store for another bottle! I am not making this cast to thin lol. I also learned how difficult fiberglass can be in intricate areas. And I think I'm going to pop the bottle in the fridge for awhile because I'm going to be working outside in the sun. Thank you so much for the tips man, I need all the help I can get.

Lol, just found out you have to be 18 to buy fiberglass resin :p I now have to wait a couple more hours for my mom to go get it

I tried to glass the jaw line and ended up wasting a lot of resin. Now it wouldn't gel up and the glass kept getting bubbles in the undercuts. As soon as I thought one side was solid I turned it to the other side and It all fell out in a pile and was still cold. I pulled it all out and left it alone now. Just going to slush a couple layers in the cheek and jaw area later. Then glass the temple since that's a weak point.

All good now! I let the resin come back to room temp and it worked just fine. I also followed what you said alphatech and put a lot less hardener in there and it gave me the right working time to slush it a little. Since it worked so well I put a couple layers of glass in the cheek and it came out great. Pics later when I get it pulled out.

Thanks man, I'm kinda excited to see what I can come up with. Just got my base layer of primer on. Let the painting madness begin!

Ok, I have somewhere between 13-15 layers and a couple of washes. I don't know, but I think I'm going to buy a darker copper color and add that to the hammered part to make it stand out more. Other than that I'm happy with it.
