Backbone (Slow) Pred Build, Wip

Thanks, I haven't really made any progress so far :/ life... But I have some free time right now and got a crazy idea! A hammered metal bio helmet. I have some spare sheet metal around from another project i did in january so why not give it a try? if it doesn't fit then oh well. i can't find my ball pin hammer at the moment but I have a few other tricks. I'll get back in an hour or so to show my progress.....

That was a terrible idea, I am shredded and blistered :(

Oh well, I need some actual tools for this. I'm going to keep trying for the hell of it, so here is my progress for today.

Well, I finnished the other gauntlet. And now I put down a bio idea. Then I took the time to cut out the sword. I did the broad sword mixed with the other sword. Sorry for not taking Mary pics, as I said. I'm all alone here. Even when I did the upper body for my duct tape dummy (whitch is one difficult bitch on your own) but that was a couple months ago :)

Dude this is all good work. I just saw that you are 15 years old. That is amazing. I'm not going to say this is good work for a 15 year old because it is just good work. In my opinion I might not use all the sealed bearings. I'm sure you know this but model kits are a great place to start with finding little goodies to incorperate into a sculpt. I would say 2 things about this. First I like ship models because they are so scaled down the average person would not recognize the parts. To me the worst thing is to recognize an earthly part on a non earthly object. The second thing is this, take your time and don't just push pieces into the clay. It takes some time but you can make a piece look like it has function by placing things the right way. I think my pieces have a nice functional look to them but I spent many hours just playing with the placement of parts. Alright  I'm yakkin away here. Keep up the good work.

Thanks man, I really apretiate it.

I have really been kinda "ify" about the bearings. I like the mechanical shape of them, but they don't really match the piece. I thought a little about the model bits, but now you have my mind racing! I'll be back with some more tonight. Thanks again

Quick update. Just playing with some bits an pieces of models. Still just fitting it to see. Depending on how far I get I might update again tonight.

Silicone for the mask is in today, off to wash out the mold one more time to make sure it's ready.

~Henry~

Well, I bought the trial size thinking it would be thin but workable cast. That turned out to be a $45 mistake. Holes everywhere. I really should have expected this. At least I get to see all the imperfections in the mold. I'm just going to call this a cleaning cast, patch up my mold, and not be upset :)

EDIT: put the teeth in for kicks

Hey Henry, sorry to here about the 45 bucks. You have to chalk it up. I'm impressed that you are tackling the silicone mask route. I saw the mold in your post but don't remember seeing the sculpt. Did I just miss it or did you not post it? By more silicone and get after it we have all had these kinds of setbacks.

Yah, we all gotta learn somehow. Me the hard way I guess. I saw usurper has a silicone suit going, ninjabiker has a silicone mask out recently. they inspired me to go silicone! im halfway there for ordering the gallon sized kit of this stuff.

Looks like you missed it, I had a
thread going for my sculpt.

I must have changed my mind 10-12 times before I molded it.

Alright, small update. I made an armerature for my biomask. It's pretty close to the shape of my sculpt. My only problem will be the jaw line, but it's workable. No sculpting tonight, my clay is kinda dry now. I accidentally left the bag closed without a wet towel for a couple of days. Its double bagged and full of soaked paper towels right now, will see about getting to it soon. Any way I'll explain my process for a quick cheap armerature.
First I did some measuring of my sculpt before I molded it just in case I needed them. Then I made some measurements of the inside of the mold, by some I mean a lot. I measured the depth of the dome along the center line at segments, I measured everything else from the dome pretty much. Othe than the face which I measured depth at the upper and lower mandibles, the widths and lengths of upper to lower mandible. Then the with at the eyes, the widest part of the jaw and the widest part of the temple. I used these measurements to make a middle section of the side view of the face, and another following the slope of the dome. I glued them to a base that had a corresponding length and width at specific areas. Then I ha a pre cut secon of the flat base and cut out the dome and cheek areas up to the top of the eyebrows. Glues that on and now I have the crown with the right width. Then I glued a couple of strips to the dome are following the side view pieces. Then more strips glued down going horizontaly. I followed a similar pattern with the cheeks and put some flat pieces on the eye and brow area. The eyes I cut out and drew down are not the actual eye shape, I just needed a reference area to see where the eye sockets would be. I also used m bad cast as a reference for size. Fits like a glove!

I got to sculpting the bio. All I did was start blocking it out and my mind went to seeing it have the ram bio shape, but I liked the Celtic bio. So now I have the ram Celtic custom mix up. I'm just going to sculpt it where it takes me with the little shapes and angles. I also came up of doing the dome In 2 layers. The top semi clear layer covered a bunch of machine like parts and tubes on the first black layer, and have some blue LEDs around the edges. Then again I might change that. Anyway here is some pics.

More smoothing and fixed minor symmetry issues. I'm unsure about the teeth thing, it doesn't really match. It's supposed to look like a separate piece but it blends in. :/ I'm going to try some different stuff on paper first I think.

I added some of my origional design with the ancient bio mixed in texture wise. I'm pretty much finished, some minor tweaks here and there but not much.

I remember reading awhile ago about someone using the pure silicone in the caulking tubes to make a mold, is this a good idea?

You have a helluva talent for your age well done. Hope your creativity and talent will endure Through your carreer choices. I know a few talented people that end up doing nothing with it, it's tragic..

Thanks man, sorry im a little slow on the reply. I would love to do this stuff for the rest of my life, i just have no idea where to start :/

~Henry~

Alright, I finally got to molding the bio, just got the beauty coat of silicone on him. Pics later! Hoping to have a pull in then next week.....
