Avengers Drama

I would also remind people that Stan Lee had to sue Marvel for the $10 million owed him for Spider Man, 2 years after the fact. They said that they had at that point not made a profit on the film yet. Yeah, they're all class. Oh, and as for Norton, American History X, and Red Dragon. He has plenty of talent.

The guys at Marvel are the tools here. They will toss anyone under the bus - ANYONE. It's pretty unprofessional for them to take out an ad just to bash Norton by saying he's not willing to work with everyone. Norton follows Raimi who was let go only because he cared about the work he did. I'll be glad when this whole Superhero trend goes away and Marvel stops making millions.

In a statement sent in direct response to yesterday's story from the set of "Captain America" in London, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige forwarded the following exclusively to HitFix:

"We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks."

And Ed's agent firing back:

"We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige's mean spirited, accusatory comments. Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his. Feige's statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory. Mr. Norton talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel's fans."

The thing is - Kevin didn't just announce Ed would not be coming back as Hulk - he attacked him in a way that can harm someone's career by implying they are "uncollaborative". The only reason for Marvel to do this was to attack Norton in public - very unprofessional.

CHUD is saying that Marvel is looking at Joaquin Phoenix.

Really?

WILL THE NEW HULK RISE LIKE A PHOENIX?

Bruce Banner no, but maybe he could play Ted Kaczynski?

Well, that's what Marvel's saying, but the timeline presented by Norton's reps (in their full statement rather than the excerpt that keeps getting posted on other sites that picked up the story) indicates that it must have been the deciding factor. They say that Norton had a great meeting with Joss Whedon and that everyone was excited about his involvement - and that this was confirmed by Feige himself in a call to Norton's reps. I don't know how you go from there to wanting him out based on their HULK experience - if he was so difficult then, why even have the meetings? They must have balked at the cost.

Maybe they should get Tobey McGuire..no wait....Tobey and Norton should start their own Spider-Man/Hulk movie.

(Yes I realize they wouldn't have the rights to do so)

wow. Now THAT's classy of Marvel. :rolleyes Sheesh. You want to tell the world it didnt' work out, fine and dandy. Just cite "creative differences" and move on, don't badmouth the guy by saying he's unwilling to work as part of an ensemble. That makes him sound like a primadonna or something.

When Gary Marshall called out Lindsay Lohan as being unprofessional, it made sense (because she is, or at least was). When this happens, though, it just looks petty. Even if it's true, it could've been handled WAY better to get the same point across. Hell, a simple whisper campaign would've worked way more effectively than taking out an ad and making a public statement if your goal is to create the impression that he's "difficult to work with."

I've never seen one of Norton's movies. This is the same thing they pulled with Ironman 2 when they got rid of the good actor playing Rhodey and brought in that new guy who really isn't right for the part. On a side note at least they got someone good to play Captain American (dude seems to love comic book movies).

What gets me is the way he's being treated... apparently the man was never given a chance and at least appeared to want to do this. Of course, that could be just the public reaction to what Marvel started.

funny how the same thing could be said for eric bana.

all this collaborative talk isnt like marvel's making this up. he is a difficult person to work with. i dont blame them not wanting to work with him. dont you all remember what his problem was with the very same character you all want him to play again? how he refused to promote it because he didnt get what he wanted?

my favorite movie involving norton is the painted veil, because he died a horrible death.

i cant believe i defended marvel for something. yuck. i need a shower.

Good call, I forgot about that. Terence Howard playing Rhodes in the first Iron Man film was much better than Don Cheadle, IMO.
