Re: Avatar reviews

Getouttahere....lol

I did like District 9 though, great little film.:thumbsup

I think you missed the point, Al.

District 9 accomplished everything that Avatar tried to do, but it did it with a different -- and not so ****ing bland -- narrative. Both were telling the same story, but Blomkamp told it much, much better. If you take away those stereoscopic "groundbreaking" FX... what have you got? Nothin'. That's why the 2-D sessions aren't even close to being full.

Would we even be talking about it? Nope.

As Jet Beetle always says, "Give it a few months... it'll wear off!" (Sorry to paraphrase you here, Paul!).

Re: Avatar reviews

No.

But I think Neil and Duncan would buy each other beer... 'cos they both rule!

Re: Avatar reviews

I don't think District 9 or Moon achieved quite the same effect as AVATAR, although I like both those movies very much.

It's like saying 2001 or Planet of the Apes achieved the same thing as Star Wars.

They are all differen, coming from different angles and perspectives.

AVATAR may indeed be short lived, that's part of the fast consumer lifestyle we all subscribe to today. Things come and things go, as Ferris said, "pretty fast".

It doesn't make it any less a great movie event right now.

Re: Avatar reviews

Well, with that said, Return of the Jedi must be a masterpiece! Because, let's face it, this movie is as deep or compelling as that or any of the prequels.

This reaction tells me that if the PT had been shot in stereo, with performanced captured characters (and not had the name "STAR WARS" attached), then it wouldn't have been universally hated.

Re: Avatar reviews

Are you telling me you hate teddy bears?

How can anyone hate teddy bears?

That's just heartless.

Re: Avatar reviews

You can hate on ROTJ, and it was the worst of the OT, but to put it on par with the PT is just...low.

Re: Avatar reviews

I know we are on a tangent here...but then again when aren't we?

But ROTJ is WAAAAAAAY better than any of the prequels, I agree.

By a long shot. At least, there were no midichorians in ROTJ.

But we digress. Why do we have to turn every discussion into a SW discussion? My fault, I guess...

We are obsessed, I tell you, obsessed! Someone call Father Merrin and tell him to bring the phantom edits.

What are we talikng about again..? Ooh yeah, that new James Camerson film. Titanics, was it?

hang ion, I just had a thought! Call Merrin back and ask him to pick up some cheesey balls on his way over. Family size bag.

Re: Avatar reviews

Just got back two hours ago, and it's taken me this long to think over what I saw.

My conclusion is that I won't be watching Star Wars for quite some time.

Re: Avatar reviews

I just saw it. I knew exactly what was going to happen at every turn and right from the beginning I knew how it was going to end.

And I loved every last bit of it.

Sometimes a story has to go the way its supposed to go. It doesn't have to be new and unexpected. New and unexpected only works the first time you watch a movie. The second time you watch it you know whats going to happen. Doesn't stop any of you from having watched a few movies more than a few times over has it?

I felt like staying in my seat and watching it over again right there actually.

Re: Avatar reviews

Look, mate, I'm saying that I reckon that you think I think you think ROTJ isn't great, wheras in fact it actually is, but I reckon that you just don't like Warwick Davis. I've never heard you rave about Leprechaun for instance.

However, in fairness, you might do, as that issue has never specifically been addressed here.

Has Merrin arrived with those cheesy balls yet?:lol

Re: Avatar reviews

Really enjoyed the movie once I was able to shove aside my cynicism about the uber-derivative plot to one side and enjoy the spectacle.

Observations -

-Sigourney Weaver's Avatar was hot.

-Stephen Lang is the most fully realised & photo-real all CGI character yet created.

-The Navi weren't alien enough. The design worked well enough for me in the end, they were just so 'African' it pulled me out of the story a little.

-Liked the electronic elements of Horner's score pretty well, but the ethnic stuff was weak and derivative.

- Michelle Rodriguez always dies. She is the female Sean Pertwee.

- Lang reminded me of the leader of the Small Soldiers.

- US right wingers are unlikeley to enjoy this movie.

-The weapons and ships were kinda blah for Cameron.

Re: Avatar reviews

Sorry, just saw this:

RotS was a better movie than this.

Sorry, still wiping the tears from my eyes.

Dude, Ferngully was a better movie than ROTS.

Re: Avatar reviews

Saw it tonight, was blown away. I can't say I relate to some of you about the story. I think Falcon Dude nailed it as far as that goes. After you've seen a film once you know what's going to happen regardless, so I really could care less that the story is similar or even very much the same as others. It worked well for this film and that's all that matters to me. Think I'll be avoiding reading or participating in any more review or opinion threads about future releases from here on out. I realize it has somewhat affected my ability to enjoy things without being overly critical of every twig or piece of dust. I read all of these negative opinions about stuff before hand and then go in unable to totally shake the observations of others from my head. As for cartoons, I'll take Jim's cartoons over George's any day.:thumbsup

Re: Avatar reviews

Man, I hear you. And I used to look up reviews of a movie AFTER I'd seen it, if I was realllllly into it, just to learn more or see what I could find...and it was always such a downer, things getting picked to death. I remember a time when I genuinely LIKED "AotC." Before the Internet told me I shouldn't.
