Astyanax's Makes, Builds and Acquisitions: 2022 & Earlier

October 21, 2022

I received this Eddie Munson's Guitar Pick Necklace from Stranger Things (TV), purchased from RPF User Kylash's PlasticGeek store.

PXL_20240528_005759097.jpg

Not much to it, but it makes a nice accent piece. A real pick on a real chain. ;)

I received this Soap Bar from Fight Club (1999), purchased from a seller on eBay.

PXL_20240528_005720486.jpg

It's made of real soap! And while it's not a replica prop from within the movie itself, it was an important part of the promotion for the film.

I received this Paper Street Soap Co. Business Card from Fight Club (1999), purchased from a seller on Etsy.

PXL_20240528_010611306.jpg

There are several versions available out there, but I found this one to be the most accurate.

I received this Luke's Lightsaber from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983), purchased from a seller here on the RPF. This is the DS2V2 from Anakin Starkiller and Halliwax, and I promise I have not made a mockery of it by painting it my own way!

PXL_20240528_010205560.jpg PXL_20240528_010247342.jpg PXL_20240528_010256438.jpg

I grew up in the 80s with this model of lightsaber as my favorite, probably thanks to the iconic poster that was everywhere (see below). So even though the V2 saber is supposed to be heavily weathered and painted slightly differently, I wanted to give it a beautiful new finish; that helped me recapture my childhood! So instead of a black, I painted the neck copper (or rather Antique Gold).

The clamp card comes from the WannaWanga store, again, my own preference.

So partly accurate, and custom to me!

I'm also very proud of my application of the black on the hand-grip: I followed in others' footsteps by spraying it in flat black, and then spinning on its axis with a hand drill and sandpaper held on the edges!

(Okay, so I had learned a few more techniques since the last check in, and was starting to feel a little bit more like I belonged in this hobby!

I received this Holy Grail from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, made by and purchased from RPF user Restaurajones.

PXL_20240528_010432904.jpg

I had previously made the mistake of buying the awful resin version on Amazon, and went online looking for the best. I am 100% convinced that Restaurajones' version is absolutely most authentic looking to how it appears in the film. Most other cups have too much contrast and not enough dirt. Probably helps that this cup is made out of ceramic!

(It's about this time I decided I might want to think about more display space!)

I received this One Ring and Chain from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, purchased from (yes, sorry!) AliExpress.

PXL_20240528_010928753.jpg

The ring is allegedly made out of tungsten and gold plated, and the Elvish script is laser engraved. I actually prefer this over the official Weta version, because it doesn't have the copyright print on the inside!

(This is my favorite of all the "cheap" prop replicas I own, because it displays like a ring that is 5 times the cost!)

I received this Santa Claus/Clause Card from The Santa Clause (1994), purchased from a seller on Etsy.

PXL_20240528_005342753.jpg PXL_20240528_005354685.jpg

This card is really impressive. It's printed in raised text as a real business card, and the red frame contains most of the text of the actual "clause"! This is darn close to really accurate. And in time for Christmas!

I received this McLovin Driver's License from Superbad (2007), purchased from a seller on Etsy

PXL_20240528_005416522.jpg

This is printed on plastic, and is much closer in accuracy to the myriad McLovin cards available out there!

I finished the build of this Leeloo-Dallas-Multi-Pass from The Fifth Element (1995), purchased as a resin cast kit from VoodooFX.

PXL_20240528_011622177.jpg PXL_20240528_011656780.jpg

Now this one turned out to be a much greater challenge than I expected. I had to get comfortable with filling and sanding LIGHTLY, and I had to source the vertical rod and the white light online, and bring them all together. Placing the stickers was one of those "you-only-get-one-chance" kind of things.

The Fifth Element.mkv_snapshot_01.08.47_[2022.11.25_14.28.10].jpg The Fifth Element.mkv_snapshot_01.08.41_[2024.05.27_19.41.08].jpg The Fifth Element.mkv_snapshot_01.08.17_[2022.11.22_21.09.34].jpg The Fifth Element.mkv_snapshot_01.10.44_[2022.11.23_10.46.42].jpg 127771205_3808703725829599_370034546631291611_n.jpg 127677881_3808703709162934_8063182501326072654_n.jpg

(There are a lot of poor quality copies out there, but when it was done, I was sooooo excited; this was the first prop I had built (from a kit) where I had made all the choices and felt like I nailed it! This Multi-Pass is a pride and joy in my collection!)

I received this Aztec Coin from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), purchased from RPF user Magnoli Props' store.

PXL_20240528_005502067.jpg

The coin is gold-plated metal, and came shiny and new. I dirtied it up a bit with a medium brown acrylic wash.

(Not my best weathering job...needs some burnt sienna!)

December 23, 2022

I finished the build of this PPG Blaster from Babylon 5, a resin-cast kit from RPF user JOATRASH FX.

PXL_20240528_011331257.jpg PXL_20240528_011355275.jpg PXL_20240528_011459765.jpg

After priming, the paint job is Alclad II Polished Aluminum over black gloss. This was my first attempt at the "brushed aluminum" effect, and I think I only got partway there.

The red inner barrel is a piece of rigid tubing that I colored with a red Sharpie.

The screws and brass rod are real. The grips are real Pachmayr brand to complete the look.

(This one came out as great as I'd hoped...now I wanted to make many, many more replicas!)

My last acquisition of 2022 was a gift from my family: this Stephen's Sling Ring from Doctor Strange (2016) and the Infinity Saga of Marvel films. The sling ring was purchased from Dark Matter Props.

PXL_20240528_010032474.jpg

It's solid cast metal, nicely weathered and protected. Fun to wear!

And that concludes my inventory of items acquired in 2022 and the few years before.

If you enjoyed this, my inventory continues in 2023 and 2024 threads.

Thanks for reading!

I received this Spanish Doubloon from The Goonies (1985), purchased from a seller on eBay.

View attachment 1824757 View attachment 1824758

There are several versions available out there, but I liked this one the best; it has two different types of patina going on. I also weathered it further with a black acrylic wash.

View attachment 1824759 View attachment 1824760 View attachment 1824761

That's a recast of my Doubloon...

A few people had gotten these from the Goonie Museum in Oregon, which had also recast my Doubloon, but sold plastic versions of them... So, these plastic versions had been used to make their own...

Whoah, thanks for the heads-up, I had no idea! Stands to reason that's probably not the only recast thing in my collection.

I'll try to get an authentic one, because your cast is the best IMO. PM incoming!
