Aries 1B studio model found intact

Are there pics of up the main engines?

Short answer - no. The auction house is being very cautious about the model. We've pored over it and lifted the top to look inside, but they are nervous about actually flipping the model over. The mount looks sound, but given the tools and manpower on site, I can see why they are nervous. I'm hoping to "steal" some shots as the model is crated up after the auction (pending the OK of the new owner).

I can understand the "flipping" part might be difficult, but maybe a tilted mirror under the engine/landing gear could, at least, show us the beast. Of course, when you're taking precise measurements, that idea goes out of the window:(

Few more notes. I will get to some of the detail parts and greeblies soon......

This is such great info Gene. Thanks again for taking all the time and effort to do these surveys and for sharing the results!

I still can't get over the fact that this miniature surfaced after all these years. After it sells for big $$$, let's hope that it might motivate other artifacts to surface as well. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the large Pod or the Orion!

Oh **** me blind and sideways! :eek :love I may be 47 but seeing this has just turned me straight back into a manically grinning 10 year old kid again, who's just been let loose in the sweet shop. Many, many, thanks, guys, both for the great work in taking measurements and taking loads of fantastic pics, and for the kit list (going to be fascinating to see what extra info having the real thing to hand will bring to that list).
For some time now I've been slowly saving info and ref' photos of this model, whenever I find anything, and this is better than I could have ever hoped for. Damn me, but this has made my day. Simply stunned to log in to the forum and find out it's suddenly popped back into view.
It may be grubby and in sore need of some major TLC, but if it's cleaned up and restored properly and sensitively it should be safe and sound for years and years to come.

Many thanks to phase pistol for that documentary on Kubrick.

Probably a real D'oh! question but will this thread be added to the Stuck list? Hope so.

Digressing some here... so it was supposed to fit inside the space station docking bay right?
I mean that's how he got from the station to the Aries right?
Seems like it might have been a tight fit.

Many thanks Gene. You have an idea how these info are so precious to us model makers and fan of the movie:cool...maybe after building the Space Station, I'll tackle that Aries after all;)

Cessna, i was thinking the same thing.

But today I found some pics of a model shoot showing an Aries mounted sideways in the docking bay.
These shots are not from the film or production I believe but done after.

I can't post links or pics at the moment, maybe someone will step in?

From the pics it looks quite plausible

Zorg, I know the shots you're talking about and they're not from 2001, but an amateur sci-fi short made around a decade later.

Yeah I know, I did state that above.
but it gives a good idea of how it might have worked.
