Another Gizmo on the way... Update.

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

I think the eyes look better when looking in another direction, in the screen used ones, he seems incapable of concentrating on whats directly in front of him, so it seems more "natural" to see his eyes off an angle :p

Looks much better, and I expect that once you attach the head to the body, it'll look even better. Once the fur is actually down also, it'll help.

Whats next on the todo list, finding a flesh-tone for the skin/ears/fingers/lips/nose?

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

If you don't mind the criticism, the nose and mouth are too far below the eyes. I have a screen used Gizmo face and the nose and mouth are much further up, a little bit above the bottom of the eyes.

I wouldnt say they're that far off. Maybe a mm ish at most really. I must say though, your Gizmo face is rather off-putting, makes me think that the Devils Rejects or someone found Gizmo :(

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

Thanks for your advice, guys. I still haven't had the chance to make any more progress yet, but I'm hoping to very soon.
Cheers - Chris

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

Hi again folks! Haven't really had a chance to get back here lately and I've just been flat out with all the important life stuff over the last little while. Needless to say, my poor little Gizmo has been gathering dust and slowly falling apart, so I figured that I had to get back into this project before it all goes to waste.
So it's now time to get my game together and get things happening.

Step 1. Begin the repair process...

Hope to report with some news in the near future.

Cheers - Chris

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

Finally making some progress again. I've gone ahead and clear coated the model, probably 20 coats or so. Nice and glossy and sealed now. Been prepping my foam for the molds. Clay is ready, plaster's ready, but I'm still waiting for my silicone. Had to order from the importer. Doesn't seem to be any local sellers.
Anyway, here are the models awaiting their molds.

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

Ok. So I've been messing around a bit and I think that I finally have the eye situation sorted.
I've held off any molds yet as I wasn't 100% sure that I wouldn't have to alter anything, and I'm glad I was patient. Turns out that I'm going to amend the eye region of the head sculpt to actually include the eye assembly.
Here are some photos with the eyes, lids and fur all just sitting in place to give the idea of how it should look once all together. Yeah, his fur's all messed up and what-not, but he'll be all nice and combed when I put together a proper build...
As always, appreciate any feedback you might have.

Cheers - Chris

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

If you could find a way to make your Gizmo dance like your avatar, you will have won. Period.

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

Ok, lazy update. Finished the final coat of primer over the model, now ready to mold this week. I hope...
Here's the little fella all grey and stuff. Can't wait to complete this project once and for all. Knowing my luck though, will probably still be months off because of some nonsense I'll end up creating for myself.

*For those interested, if you work with plasticine, you'd know that not much likes to stick to it in the way of paints, but, after much trial and error, I eventually came across an amazing primer by 'White Knight' called 'Rust Guard - SLS Etch Primer'. Really did a great job of staying stuck. It's designed to prime metals and such.

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

Been busy this week, where I've managed to find the time anyway. Christmas rush is crazy...
Since having the little bugger primed and ready, I've since made some progress on the molding. Again, this is my first time, so things are probably a little less than pretty, but so long as it casts fine, I'm going to be a very happy little vegemite.

Started with the clay base over a foam bed and carved out a key in the clay.

Poured the first coat of silicone.

Then put another layer of silicone, after which I used plumbers silicone to build up some areas and create dams to catch the final layer of silicone in the appropriate areas. I later stuck in some silicone pieces to help bed the silicone into the plaster later on.
*The tube silicone worked beautifully for those interested. Very handy.

After applying the first coat of plaster, I didn't have any hemp strands (as recommended in the tutorial I've been following), but I've had a big bag of match sticks kicking about for ages, so I figured I'd put them to good use and jamb 'em into the plaster while it was still wet to hopefully act as a strengthening 'grid'.

Once I'd done the final layer of plaster and all was dry, I turned my heavy chunk of mold over and removed the clay and foam. Gave it all a good clean and now I'm ready to move onto the next half...

It's not perfect, but it appears to be coming along ok so far. As always, any feedback is much appreciated.

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

It's all been a learning experience, some good, some not so good, but it's all proving to be successful enough to keep me reasonably pleased so far.
Sadly the plasticine model didn't survive the demolding :( , which I was hoping to keep, but the mold has done ok.
I'm still yet to mold the body (time and money...), but I finally created my very first cast tonight! :D Really feels like a bit of a personal milestone. Almost thought that I messed up BIG at one stage, but I managed to recover. Been working hard at this for too long now and I'm glad it's beginning to pay off. Still a lot to do, but it's coming along. I hope you can share my cheer in my newly met goal.

Cheers - Chris

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

Still looks amazing, like always, can't wait to see more pictures of wip :D

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

Beautiful looking Gizmo. Just one little bit of advice though. PLEASE don't feed him after midnight.. LOL! Amazing work sir..

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

Life can get busy at times, not to bore you with the details, but I have made it a very personal mission of mine to finish this guy once and for all.
I am making my best effort to get this project on track again and hopefully have him finished as soon as possible.

First on the agenda, the body has now been molded. Will demold tomorrow after work...

First half.
IMG_20120602_210904.jpg

Keys cut in corners (white marbling seen in cut corners is due to mixing in cut up silicone to fill some space and save on the new stuff).

Second half poured and awaiting demold.

More to come very soon I hope...

Long time between updates, but that's life, eh?
Anyhow. Molds have been done for a while, been toying with casting materials. Looks like I'm going to be going with Smooth-On foam. I'm committed to having a finished product through the Christmas break. Already have an airbrush on the way. As the whole project has been so far, I'm learning all this as I go, but it should be ok.
Anyhow, the following is a foam cast with fur temporarily pinned on him and eyes crudely drawn on. Hope you like the progress.
As always, appreciate your feedback.
Cheers - Chris

As far between my updates usually are, I am finally close to finishing my first Gizmo. I've done some work recently and this guy is only a few appointments away from being complete. I do plan on making more as I would like to believe that I've learnt a few things along the way that would help me put together something a bit more polished than what this will end up being, but it's all been fun anyhow.
For now though, here's where he's up to at the moment. Thanks for looking. Cheers - Chris
