Another Gizmo on the way... Update.

I'm completely new to the world of sculpting or anything even slightly related, so please try to be kind. I've looked around these forums for a while, been a great source of reference material, etc. Tonight I took it upon myself to finally sign up!
Anyway...
Here's a couple of shots of my Rick Baker 'inspired' Gizmo. Started work on him a couple of weeks ago and I'm now up to the stage of making a mould for further casting and detailing. I left the body, head and hands all separate, as this seemed appropriate for casting purposes. Again, because I've never done this before though, please feel free to offer any advice. All is appreciated. Cheers

WOW, that's looking really cool. A really nice touch with the real fur. Looking forward to more progress.

How did you add the fur?

Thank you very much for the compliment. The fur is just a cheap faux fur I picked up from my local craft shop which seems to be not too bad. The sculpt is made of plasticine, so the fur was just being pinned in place while I was working on a template.

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

And you're completetly new at this :confused

Can't wait to see what you produce in a few years time !!

:thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

Been playing around a little bit, adding some extra detail and fine tuning some shaping. As you can see, I've been toying around with some eyes, not overly happy with these 24mm sorts, so I'm waiting for some 30mm eyes to arrive before I get fancy on the eye lids, so he's looking somewhat surprised at the moment :D
I think I'm ready to mold the body now, then once the eyes are sorted I'll mold the head separately. This way I can reuse the body and just remake the heads should I decide to create the other mogwai characters.

How does the fur stay attached? Do you just glue it on or something? Are you planning on doing any extras? I'd love to pick up a giz.

The model is currently made out of plasticine, so the fur was only being kept in place with pins temporarily.
As far as making any to sell, this is my first time sculpting anything, so potential business endeavors might be somewhat optimistic for the time being :D :D :D
See how we go, I guess. To have someone want to buy something I've made would be an absolute honor.

That fur in one word?

Adorable.

Can't wait to see the final product! :D

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

Thanks for all the kind words, folks! Can't express how grateful I am.

I was tired as all heck after getting home from work tonight, plus I've been getting a little bothered by not having made a mold yet, so I thought that I should get my act together and start making some progress.
I've been wanting to test out some more fur trials before I was satisfied that the body was right to mold, so I've spent the night getting some patterns worked out.
I'm still waiting for my new eyes to arrive, so I still haven't finished his face 100% yet, but here's where I'm up to so far. As before, the fur is just being held in place with pins. You may notice that there are a couple of different browns in the mix at the moment, but until I've got my patterns sorted, I'll worry about settling on a brown then...

Still needs some tweaking, but here's where I'm up to so far:

As always, I value your feedback.
Cheers - Chris

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

Did you say that you're going to get some new eyes? From most the pictures I've seen of Gizmo his eyes, his Iris covers almost all of the white of his eyes. Looks great though? How does the fur work, do you pretty much just cut it out and stick it on? I've wanted to try and do one of these and maybe a Critter but wasn't sure about the fur work.

Right about the eyes. That's why he looks a little 'shocked' at the moment.
With the fur for the final product, I would imagine it's just a matter of gluing it in place.

Thanks for the compliment ...and the insult :D :D
Glad I inspired you to go chase down your own Gizzy! Cute little buggers, aren't they?
If I do happen to pull off the task of making any more of these, however ambitious that might be, it'd be a pleasure to see some of these fuzz balls make it into other peoples homes! For now though, I've got to tweak this guy a bit more. With his fur on, I think his arms now look a touch too short, so I might lengthen them a tad. Still waiting for my eyes, so as soon as they drop in I'll be sure to finally get his head finished.

Amazon.com: Gizmo 6 inch plush from Gremlins: Toys & Games

Not nearly as cute as yours looks like it'll turn out. For your eyeballs, whichever you wind up choosing, really need to be large, and GLOSSY. Whenever I think of gremlins, I picture a close up shot of Gizmo on an angle, with these really glossy giant eyes.

The arms, from the last shots, I'm not sure if you want to go much longer, all the images I see of him, he has very short stumpy arms. Aside from using a bow and arrow in the second movie, his arms appeared to short/inefficient to do anything major.

As a child I always wanted a pet Gizmo :p

I know the doll you've just bought. I have three of them. They come in happy, scared and sad. Some of the first few Gizmo's I ever bought actually. Very cute.
I sure hope my Giz turns out to be as cute as you say. I think the eyes are very important, which is why I had to look around quite a bit before I found something I was happy with. Just have to wait and see once they arrive.
Regarding the arms, I didn't get a chance after work tonight to have a good look, but I'll study all my reference material and try to work that one out. Shouldn't be too much hassle.
Lastly, yes, me too. I also wanted/would still love to have a real pet Gizmo! :D

Re: Another Gizmo on the way...

I love this build, the fur looks incredible can't believe its just off the shelf faux fur.
You must have a lot of natural talent if this is your first prop build
