You could just use a brass screw and make the escutcheon nut from a brass nut. Prob 1/8 inch is fine.

Turn it round with a drill and file.

So I singled a couple pictures out and got them into scale that show this PS mount up against the HERO. You can overlay them yourself as they all match up pretty equal using the scope itself. Make of it as u will. I have a strange feeling about this..

I don't see any similarities that indicate any part of the PS lower mount could be the original.

If the lower mount was "restored" and parts welded on, refinished and filed to remove weld buildup, reshaped to taper the ends (different than the original) and the under cradle undercut filled in , welded and filed down to remove the weld build-up and the entire mount made larger in height then there could be no "original" scratches left on the surface.

I'm not sure what section of the PS mount exactly is thought to have survived? What piece is thought to be original? The lower screw ears are different shapes too.

Any scratches or tool marks on the PS that look similar are purely coincidental IMO.

I have to agree .. it’s very bizarre and at the end of the day pointless because it’s NOT the original mount. Regardless of what was or wasn’t used. IMHO that is.

In other news my obsession is recreating this mount at the moment. So I took kpax’s recent drawing and overlayed it over my mount. Assuming my mount is in scale this was very nice to see..

In this image the mount is almost dead on side view. I used it to estimate the full mount based on the screw locations and ear distance.
Copy and flip and add the bottom based on the center nut and viola. My 2d model matched to the HERO.

Here is a CU of just the right side ears.

The screw holes lined up.
The tool marks are not the same. Similar, yes, but not a match IMO.

Thanks but in that image the PS is a bit too low angle which distorts a little.
I used the left upright and bottom layer over the flipped right side to get the composite.

You can see it is much larger in height than the original tho about the same overall width.

I do hope Carl still has the mangled bottom.

I love hardware builds. Think about it this way, you've got to make half-deep holes in the grips to place a nut or something. (forstner bit would be perfect) As long the holes don't go all the way through the grips, the nuts can "sandwich" or pinch the grips together. I had trouble with those, the brass is so thin there wasn't a lot of surface area to grip with. Go full hardware store. Get a brass hex nut or something threaded like that and use a cheese head screw or a countersunk one!

Hey, people with real Hensoldt scopes, do the set screws on the body poke-out a little? My Todds costumes scope has set screws that (I think because they are oval headed) protrude a tiny bit from the tube. I was disassembling my mount earlier today and remembered that I carved spots inside the cradle for the set screws to sit so the scope can sit flush in both cradles

I was actually finding this to be a problem on my own Todd's scope too, so what I actually did was add a layer of electric tape inside my cradle and mount caps. This gave the cradle's inside a bit of softness so that the protruding screwheads wouldn't cause the scope to be held crooked, and it also helps prevent the scope from being scratched up.

I was looking at the images comparing the glue edges build up on the grill and missing disc area. They create the same type ridges and highlights to my eye.
Interesting to compare.

I enhanced and converted to B&W for equal comparison.
In the bottom image you can see a tiny "raised" glob creating the "lip" seen at the bottom edge of the disc.

thanks! Thats another good solution. Much better than my milling material away lol although my screws do have a nice pocket they lock into. scottjua has held a lot of them, I wonder if he knows if the tube screws poke out.

I figure this weird mount wasn't made for the helsoldt, so I was wondering if they had this problem too
