ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

At this point I'm almost just considering buying a real C96 hammer and using it on my steel Mauser replica (I USED to have one, but no matter where I look I haven't been able to find it x.x). The issue with Field Marshall's replacement hammer is just something I can't fix, and short of bothering him constantly I haven't heard back from him in a while now.

Here is the original hammer:

You can see that the back of the hammer doesn't continue low enough to meet the sweep of the Mauser's frame properly, and you can tell why. As it came the diagonal angle of the hammer had been ground on by somebody.

This might not be a huge problem to some, but for me it throws off the shape of the entire hammer and makes the whole thing look super wonky in profile.

Can be very annoying.

Can you or do you know someone who can weld?

I'd rather not try and mess with the part myself; if Chris has more hammers that haven't been ground on like this one then I would happily do a return/swap of parts. Otherwise I would just like to return this hammer and either make do with my old one (which is only slightly off in a way that no one but me notices/cares about lol), or try and sub in a real C96 hammer.

Note on Real Mausers - mine have different hammers and slight shapes. Im not even sure a real hammer would fit on FM.

Often the search for perfection can be reached with these real parts. Us replicators have a crazy eye for detail and that's no bad thing, but can often ruin the fun of building.

My 2 cents!

Of course, though in this case I'm doing my best to stay as accurate to the Hero prop as I can. I entirely understand that real C96s all have a tremendous amount of variance in them (especially given how many components of them seem to have been handmade), though in this case I'm just trying to match the prop's pieces as best I can.

From what I know about Field Marshall's pieces they were laser scanned from a real pre-war commercial, though I don't know how much/if the hammer itself was modified.

The engagement notches and sear etc may be different and need to be recut on a real hammer.
Not sure how accurate FM was in replicating the action.

The cost of back and forth return etc snd time to maybe recut snd fit the real hammer may be something to consider.

If FM replaces it with a better hammer great. Are you sure it’s a mistake. ?

If not a simple weld build up and reshape would be easy for you.

Something to consider.

I did modify my original hammer to lean further forward already (on the first run the hammers all leaned very far back instead of sitting upright), which also involved shifting the upper forward a little bit. So that hammer has already been modified.

And again, if I could just exchange the second hammer with FM for a new one that hasn't been ground on then I would be happy. I'm fully able to modify parts myself when it comes to reshaping metal, but I just don't have the ability to weld/add more metal on.

Yes, I am sure it is a mistake. Perhaps FM's new hammers had some kind of machining flaw to them so they were all slightly ground on by hand?

Here are both hammers side by side. You can see just how heavily the new one had been ground on.

I could never get the FM hammer to work in my replica. Honestly let down with how I couldn't get that OR the safety to work for $800...and crummy plastic grips to boot

But my real Mauser hammer fit and worked great. It makes it feel better too.

Ok, so a real C96 hammer will fit? That's great to know, thanks!

Now I just need to find one somewhere; just about every website that sells Mauser parts seems to be completely out of stock

I picked one up on eBay a few years back, but it dropped in just fine - actually worked right away with no fitting needed.

I did the same a few years back, along with a couple other C96 parts. The hammer is just the one that I can't find right now, and I've looked just about everywhere for it too!

Just my luck.

Ya it’s still a little ways away from taking its final form but I’ll be adding filets to soften those edges.. thanks V.

Chris is reading this thread and paying attention I’m sure. So he’s more than likely aware of ur issues before u have to say anything. Personally I won’t be buying anything from FM anytime soon. But that’s just me and to each their own..

That would be nice if he does, although I would not be surprised if he is simply busy with other things at the moment. And at least from me I do just need to reiterate that for whatever my own opinions of the parts I have bought from Chris and Todd, none of the complaints I have should be taken as personal offenses to the people behind them. I have a lot of respect for the work that they do and have done already, and the last thing I would want is for any of my nitpicks to be misconstrued as anything other than my own two cents.
