ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

upload them to a server and link to them.

On another note... what is the cross bar colored black with? And the knurled knobs?

I have a mix of leftover parts... so my lower bracket is bare aluminum, and the cross bar and knobs are as per the run I think and are black. But I need the bracket to match... if I can figure out how to make them the same.

edit:
here's mine for now. I think the center knob is black oxide... as It comes off on my hands.

Here's how my sleeve bull barrel fits. No trimming, modifying. It's a great fit.

Oh and the MGC upper in the pic, has been sanded lightly and blued with perma blue. A couple of applications of the liquid type. Not very dark yet... kind of grey/brown.

It fits great, but it is too far forward due to the MGC's thickness. Any good advice for mounting the bracket?

BTW, this is what I do to re-blue.

1. Clean and degrease the part.
2. Use a torch or heat gun to warm the part.
3. Thoroughly brush on the bluing liquid and let it set for ~ 5 minutes.
4. Wash the part with water.
5. Buff it with very fine steel wool.
6. Finish with some Break Free CLP.

Thanks. Do you know anything about the first part of my question?

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

No idea. I stripped the powdercoat off of everything and plan to paint with semi-gloss black and weather. Just blued the flash hider:

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

I have one of the steel ones with the wrong holes... I was thinking about blueing it too and using it... but the holes bugs me. So the aluminum is all I have that's correct.

That looks great!

I just re-blued the upper, and its getting darker... might try one more application later.

SO... does anyone know the thread size and pitch for the scope mount!????? The bolts for the knurled knobs and that thread into the body. I don't have the size... so I need to go buy it.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

Someone said toward the end of the JY thread. Pretty exciting seeing these come together.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

all aluminum parts if not raw are anodized
all steel parts if not raw are black ox.

if you are going to paint anyway, you need not strip the parts completely. use the color as a base/protective coat. Clean and degrease the parts , scuff up and paint over. You can look up black ox finishing. they put lacquer over it.

The two mounting nuts/threaded rod are 1/4-20 I think. The center thumbscrew may be the same.

The blued FH looks nice! Will you steel wool it to lighten it a bit for weathering/wear?

The flash suppressor came in the mail thursday, all the parts look great and now I'm ready to finish this thing!

Thanks to everyone who is posting photos of their work.

Two questions:

1) Has anyone posted photos marked up with dimensions, such as how much of a Denix barrel needs to be cut off, where exactly the flash hider should sit and likewise the bull barrel? It doesn't have to be step by step, just dims should be helpful enough.

2) Am I right in thinking that I will have to drill and tap my own 1/4-20 holes for the scope mount?

Bonus third question I just thought of: Can anyone recommend a good glue or whatever for the grille and (I'm assuming) the bull barrel?

TIA

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

Finished. I redid the flash hider several times. First I discovered that it has thousands of grooves in it. If you blue it and then weather, you'll end up with a striped one! I got the mouse sander out and sanded out 99% of the grooves. I also cut the Birchwood Casey with water because I didn't want it to be that dark. As a final step, I sealed it with Testor's dullcoat.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

There are dimensions and pics posted a few pages back about where to cut/shape the barrel

The FH will sit at the proper length if you assemble the bull barrel/booster and screw the FH on. You just need to attach the bull barrel to the receiver.

Yes, you will need to drill and tap (or epoxy if you are unable to tap) the threaded rod in place on the frame. They will need to be cut down so measure first!

I think any good brand of 2 part epoxy will work great. The 5 minute kind is good so you don't have to wait around to long for it to grip... but make sure you get the fit you want first DRY!

Then set up an area where the whole unit will sit with out moving. You can shim under the barrel to the correct height of the upper receiver bottom so it sits flat.

Eyeball it from above to make sure it is straight

If you epoxy it and as it sets you see something you don't like. you have a few minutes to pull it apart and clean off the glue (wear rubber gloves)

Even after it sets you can clean the glue out, it will just take longer and you will need to file and pick /drill it out.

I believe you could, if something catastrophic happens and it sets and is not straight, I think you could use a torch and warm the area until the epoxy softens and remove (wearing protective gloves so you don't burn your self) and mask for fumes.

By grooves I guess you mean the lathe turning machine marks and not the FH knurls :lol

Good idea to sand the parts slightly with emery to smooth it you like.

Nice job with the BC bluing. Good to know you can thin with water.

It really looks good with the dull coat too.

Finished you can really see that the shapes and knurling are perfect.

That pic is a great match for the promo pics.

Thanks. Yes, I meant the marks from the machining process on the cone. Had I not already blued it, I would have sanded the rear a little too, but they are not as noticeable.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - BIG thanks

I received my kit yesterday, and I must say that everything is absolutely amazing. I am so glad I got in on this. I can't wait to get to work on my MGC.

A BIG thanks to everybody that contibuted to making this project happen. You've all done some exceptional work. This is truly the best ANH Han blaster parts ever made, and as close to the real things that anyone would probably ever acquire.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - grips for MGC

I'd be in for a set.

just curious about grips.

How much interest would there be in a set of wood replacement grips for the MGC? Not Mauser grips that you would have to reduce the metal on the MGC, but a straight replacement.

There could also be the Mauser sized version as well.

use the existing hardware or get the replacement screw kit.

I was asking Dave if he could/would do grips and he said he would if there was enough interest

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - grips for MGC

I think there would also be a big demand for grips to fit a Denix as well.

*helpful feedback snipped*

Thanks, kpax.

Just out of curiosity... Your handle spells a word in Russian; is it intended as such, or a reference to the film?

Kpax was the name of a character in a 2001 film with Kevin Spacy. K-PAX (2001)

What does it mean in Russian?

What does yours imply?

That's cool, I thought it probably was, but you never know.

The word 'крах' in Russian is pronounced 'krakh' (the 'kh' is a hard "h" in the back of the throat, like you are clearing it), and it means like a bad failure, collapse or breakdown.

I'm sure you're very successful, no offense intended. :) I thought you might have been using it ironically.

Catsmeat is just another way to say 'cat food'. I don't mean it ironically at all... I'm a mess. :lol

It's also a character's nickname in the short stories of PG Wodehouse.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies FOUND, Update in 1st Post

very interesting...and not so ironic, (note the avatar) ...:wacko

prob why they named it K-pax, since that character is suspected of having a breakdown and is in a psych ward...not that there is anything wrong with that...at least that's what the guys in the white coats tell me

I hope not those Siberian Tigers food. Maybe a little tuna? Is this chicken or fish?:lol

...and now back to our show-

Just a note, the center thumbscrew on the mount is M6x1 thread
everything is metric threads except the top scope knob cap screws they are 4-40
the aluminum parts are anodized and that can be sandblasted off to create a good surface to paint
