ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Thanks for the input and clarification.

Does anyone know for sure what the real scope is made from? Is the entire tube brass or just the end caps?

Is the tube body aluminum?

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Thanks!

Guess we will have to use Aluminum.

Anyone have any opinion on "soft" steel parts? 12L14? leaded steel. Just looking at options so don't hold me to it.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Hey if you can post a link if you make a Junkyard interest thread. I, and I imagine others, don't check it every day. If you don't check, that post will be 20 pages down after a day! :lol

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

No problem! :thumbsup

I will post and update the First post with links to any Interest and Sale threads, as soon as we're to that point.

So not quite yet everyone, but it's getting there!

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

anyone know why this real scope looks bronze or brass under the blue?

Were some made from something other than steel?

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

ONly the lense rings are brass, the scope body is steel.
What you see is the natural shading of an old blued surface...

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

That brings up another question. Will these parts be offered in bare metal, or would we have to paint/blue them? I've never painted a metal gun replica and am a little nervous. Is the blueing process no problem?

And is it too early to ask about the grips? Would those be offered as well? Would they be wood?

THANKS for all your hard work on this project!!! (y)thumbsup

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Thanks for the measurements guys. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. I just realized I neglected to include another spec: can someone tell me the diameter of the bull barrel extension?

It's not set in stone yet, but we are checking into some finishing options.

The Mount and the possible C96 base will need some hand smoothing in places for the right look, so there may not be any finishing options offered for those. but Bull Barrels, aluminum Grills and Scope parts might turn out clean enough to be finished right after machining.

Flash Hiders are open to any desired finish really, it's tough to tell what finish the original has. Painted maybe?

If we're able to make the C96 bases, correctly sized/fitting wood grips are likely be made along with them. :thumbsup

Like Carson said, we are looking into finishing. We want to offer the best and most versatile options.

Of course a simple black spray is the easiest but not most accurate but may be fine for some models especially those NOT intending to change their Denix /MGC finish.

We may anodize the parts for protection and a base color and let the individual customize them to their liking.

We will keep discussing as we zero in.

But don't be too nervous about trying to finish it yourself. It's only paint and you can remove it and try again if you are not happy. A little mineral spirits goes a long way.

We can post a little finishing primer (pardon the pun) to go over options. I know there are a lot of resources on the RPF to help too.

The bull barrel is roughly the size of the upper receiver but has some interesting design elements that we discovered here. We have noted that the different Mauser models have slightly different dimensions.

Which Mauser C96 model do you have?

For your purpose, as a sleeve. you may need to adjust the diameter to fit over the existing barrel which would make it slightly larger than the real HERO. You will also need to make a "booster" like fixture to hold the FH centered over the barrel.

Carson may be modeling this sleeve option as well.

The measurement you need is determinable by your upper receiver sizing, right where the Bull Barrel joins.

If you want to make it really accurate, you could make the major diameter of your bull barrel match your Mauser like the first photo below. Then just chamfer the excess/overhang on either side.

Also the Bull Barrel tapers subtly outward like a rifle barrel, around half to one degree or so.

Hope that helps :thumbsup

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Interested in all CNC'd parts.

Don't know if this will help, but if anyone is interested I have a real C96 Broomhandle Mauser Barrel that I would love to have milled down and have a Bull Barrel added to.

Thanks

When you say C96 barrel, what do you mean? I thought the barrel and upper receiver were one piece.

Post a pic!

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

this time...

But with your info he should be in good shape.

Do you think a sleeve would need to be very much larger than the HERO to fit over the Mauser barrel?

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Hard to say for sure at the moment, a sleeve Barrel may work if the same size but may require a pretty sharp edge around the seam area for a good look. I'll be looking more into the sleeve barrel soon. :thumbsup
