Hey Eric I wasn't concentrating again. No not satisfied until have the right part. Its not even close.... Back to looking. Maybe its a tank turret ring?
 
Thanks. I have been sick the flu for pver 2 weeks & my concentration during that time was pathetic. Hopefully now I am somewhat better I can be on the ball. I have ordered 'Leaktite' 5 quarts buckeys that the dimensions of seem to be pretty much pn the money. They will yake a couple of weeks as hadnto get them shipped to a friend in the States that eill then send them on. I want to try the foam filling of yhe bucket as the ILM boys did.
 
Have been out sick for some time & just needing to catch up around the house, on bills & more importantly spend more ime with the kids. Im creeping back to the 'builds'(as I probably have more than I can handle going on...) & started to get the Pod together. I want to do the foam in the bucket technique but don't have any spare funds for a little while so decided to follow in Lasse's footsteps with construction in styrene. Things are coming together ok am happy to be building again. Theres not many pieces to find in the identification area & have collected 90% of whats been ID so far. Thanks for everyone's involvement in that process aswell. Idiscovered a couple of things when playing withthe paper buckets that may solve some queries about the construction of the Pod or may just be lucky coincidences. I will post that stuff in the referenece thread.
 
A little more reinforcing of the body to help hold the sheeting & have constructed the trench. Coming together nicely but I think I just ran out of styrene for the frame work......:rolleyes
 
Well had more styrene so continued on. Base structure is complete. Have to skin it in styrene now which should be a challenge :eek
 
I dont know but seeing styrene being build like this just "brings warm feelings to my heart". Great start with this build. How are you going to skin it and keep a somewhat perfect radius? Laminate multiple thin layers?

I've used other cone flattening software to hopefully laser cut the hull but can't due to the size. It's too big for the table. I did think about building a smaller pod but that's no fun!

Yeah i noticed when i cut one of the buckets in half it was curved & thought how the heck am i going to get this right.
Thank QC for that tool.
I think i will just wrap & trace leaving a bit on each end to be safe. Then just sand away.

exactly...go a little long on the top and bottom, then sand to fit.
i used the program to do my base for my chicken and worked like a champ.

trick though...is when you "wrap" the C-shape flat form, to make the cone...you end up with a "crease" when the to ends of the "C" come together. to avoid this, pre-bend/warp your C-shape. i scored the interior surface of the C, -- radially "out" away from the center of the C-shape. additionally, add a little more bend to the very ends of the C (to make the crease more...smooth?).
hope that makes sense.

Heres the base structure completed.
I sort of rushed it so I may build another one once I use this to iron out the creases :lol
 
First layer of sheeting on.
It wasn't fun & think the best way to do this would be in sections rather than one piece.
Im committed to getting this right so will try the second method tomorrow.
If I have to rebuild from scratch again I will so, just to make sure whatever I do is eventually right.
Considering the cost of parts for this project I better get it right.

Hey Lasse thanks for looking. Did you sheet your Escape Pod with one sheet or did you do it in sections?
I just pulled mine off as I screwed up the join at the back & just couldn't get it right.
Looking at the couple of pictures you posted of your builds it looks like you did it in sections?


Rick you also built a beautiful Pod.
Did you sheet in sections or one sheet?

I didn't line up the sheet correctly so it came up a couple mm short at the join.
Could have gotten away with it but it just bothered me too much so I stripped her.
I used 0.5mm sheet the first run.
I was also worried the glue wouldn't hold up but found when I started to strip the sheet off there wasn't going to be any chance of it failing.....
I used Locktite & man that stuff welds styrene together even on a thing joing.
So after alot of work cleaning up & removing welded styrene from the structure I went again with 0.25mm styrene sheet.
I now wish I had of stayed with the 0.5mm :unsure
Can't seem to win.
So I strongly suggest using 0.5mm styrene to sheet.
The 0.25mm is just a little fragile where the 0.5mm is just right.
Can see myself rebuilding from scratch before long.
Atleast I will know what not to do nextime :wacko
