Am I REALLY the only one disappointed with TFA?

I don't think being the third biggest movie of all time (as of this posting) is going to come off as a disappointment to anyone. Do we even know what kind of money it's making off the merchandise? Not even Avatar could get good merch.

I would assume that any Star Wars movie is going to absolutely blow the doors off of pretty much any other movie in terms of merch. Only Disney can really touch Star Wars for merch and now that they are together, it's probably its own category, and probably stomps all over ticket sales.

I would be interested to see how much merchandising has brought in. Especially the way they've attempted to leave no market untapped.

I love the oranges. It says that at some point an executive said "I want Star Wars everything! Everything!" And one plucky employee took that command and ran with it.

Whoever that employee is, they deserve a raise because, by God, when they are given orders, they follow them!

I gotta say I am a tad disappointed with the music. As crappy as the prequels may be, I personally loved all three themes, Duel of the Fates, Across the Stars and Battle of Heroes. TFA does not have one and all of the music is really missing that usual OOOMPH. I really cannot believe just how superior the London Symphony Orchestra is :wacko

Been to a Walmart lately? Star Wars is on everything.

I'm a guy but somebody check the tampons........

I have to clarify that I only saw it once, but based on that I kind of agree. I don't know if it was because they couldn't use the LSO or if John Williams is losing his touch. I just don't remember any real stand out themes like even the Prequels had.

I saw it twice, SVS. After my first viewing I came out of the theater wondering where the hell was the score? So then on my second (and final) viewing (I won't pay to see it again), I made a conscious effort to hear the music, and once again, I heard nothing compelling at all.

This movie sounded nothing like a Star Wars movie. Even the opening theme sounded weak and tinny--and that was in Whale's Vagina's best RPX theater!

Perhaps that it was not the LSO had something to do with the movie's lackluster score, but more than anything, I suspect JW is ready for retirement.

Yeah, maybe at mid-80's he's getting tired. Can you believe it?!? Can't believe people would get on him for that. Paul McCartney hasn't put out any good music in 30 years and he gets a free pass. Maybe 40 years.

There was no score for all reasonable purposes. I'm amazed they signed off on it.
Compared to what we got in the original trilogy it's disturbingly a non-presence.
The OT score was an ever present character woven into the story itself at times. Inseperable
with the events on screen. So many moments burned into my mind forever.
William's glory days are long past now or his modern style is ill suited for SW at a minimum.

For the record, I liked TFA (wrong thread?)
But, yah - the score was... bland?
Like, I hardly noticed it.
As CessnaDriver said, in the OT the score was a CHARACTER.
In TFA it was, like, an afterthought.

And so many people are so over the moon about Rey's Theme.
I don't get it. I think it's awful.
Pretty music for a cartoon about cute flying bugs who save the neighborhood...
...LOUSY theme for a heroine in a STAR WARS movie.

It's impossible to imagine the true classics without their stirring musical soundtracks. Imagine Star Wars without it's score. Imagine Jaws without that haunting "the shark is coming" music. Imagine Rocky without Bill Conti's inspiring music! Raiders. Superman!

This, so-called, Star Wars film, aside from being crappy in so many other ways, offered us no compelling music to accompany what we were watching in the theater, let alone remember afterwards. What were they thinking? Did the filmmakers not have the guts to tell John Williams it stinks, because he's John Williams?

After watching Spectre, I was so bummed that they egregiously under-utilized the traditional Bond theme in the movie. It was thrillingly played over the opening scene when he went out his hotel window and walked along the rooftop, and then the next time we heard it was...the END credits! So, walking into see TFA a few months later, I was confident that no matter what, the movie would be scored beautifully, courtesy of the grand maestro himself, John Williams.

Boy was I wrong.

Your disappointment is understandable. I've come to the realization and was forced to accept (thanks to the prequels) that no matter how much I want them to, no SW prequel, sequel, or spin-off will ever be able to re-create the magic of what I experienced as a child in 1977. I don't think that revolutionary, ground breaking movie experience can ever be duplicated. Not because I think everything today is crap or unworthy, but because of cinematic progression. It has both spoiled and numbed us. I went into TFA understanding this and despite some minor complaints, I had an enjoyable experience. Except for the following...........

For almost 2 years I listened to actors, fans, critics, writers, directors, bloggers, team J.J., and even my mailman imply CGI was the devil. "Real sets, practical effects" was touted so much I got tired of hearing it. After all that talk the most ridiculous and farcical scene in this movie was the product of CGI; I actually laughed out loud in the move when I saw it. I'm talking about the Rathtar scene, that ridiculous octopus looking creature. Sure.......they built a real set, and then filled it with that steaming pile of monkey poo. That scene didn't belong in this movie. C'mon guys, really!!

And no, it didn't fail because it was CGI. I don't want to hear "Yeah, that scene sucked, must have been because they tried it with CGI". It sucked because it was a ridiculous use of CGI and was blatantly contrary to all their anti-CGI hype. And for anyone waiting to pounce.............the answer is no, I didn't expect them not to use CGI in a sci-fi fantasy space movie. We knew they weren't totally averse to CGI, I just didn't think they would use it in a way that was so laughable and out of place.

Just my two cents.
