Okay, I got home, and was thus able to pop in my Blu-Ray for analysis.
For the record, my original thought, before Chrisisall raised doubt, was that the Helen Noel kiss phaser was indeed a crapazoid. Having now seen the scene in question on my nice, big 4K TV, I’m definitely convinced it is.
As Captain Dunsel noted, it has the bubble on the bottom of the handle, and the emitter nozzle looks softer-detailed and silver-painted, as opposed to the sharply-detailed, shiny aluminum emitter of the Spock hero phaser in the same scene. And, of course, it clearly has very little heft, based on how she holds it.
But it’s a nice crapazoid, so mistaking it for a midgrade at first glance isn’t unreasonable.
And, yes, the crapazoid emitter nozzle DOES break off when Kirk knocks it out of Van Gelder’s hand in the scene on the Bridge.
