Alleged Screen Used Hero TOS Phaser up for auction (now the aftermath)

So, I haven’t been following this much, so I am confused… shouldn’t the consignor, who owns the piece, be raising hell with the auction house? They know that condition they dropped it off in, and the now can see the current state of it. Shouldn’t the auction house be responsible for damaging it. They can publicly try to claim this is how they received it all they want, but they can’t lie to the consignor’s face, especially if the consignor has photo proof of it. If the auction house, in the least, appraises this at the staring bid of $80,000, then shouldn’t their insurance cover that much for damages? It just makes no sense how Heritage has been getting away with selling fakes, falsely inflating market values, and now damaging consignments and not owning up to it. This company is run by crooks.

I’m told that the Jein estate really does not care about any of these artifacts, and just wants them sold. It may well be that Heritage is being honest, here, and that the consignors themselves damaged it beforehand.

Is the estate extended family / cousins? I don’t believe Greg left behind a spouse, kids, etc.

Edit: from his obit:

He leaves cousins … and their respective families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Annie Jein.”

Well, look at the images of the Phaser from the video shot 3 weeks ago at Heritage…beyond normal wear and tear it does not appear to be damaged (again, if damage is what we are now seeing).

Gregatron Is there any more information attached to those pics, like when they were taken? Is the coIlection on public display (I haven't followed the auction closely)? Is it possible it was disassembled for some reason?

I'm tending to agree with you other than the acrylic emitter which is clearly broken

I’m not quite following what you are saying here…

The point I was making was that if the phaser is indeed showing damage in the most recent pictures that Gregatron posted, the video from three weeks ago shows that the emitter was intact and the rear fins were not damaged.

So, if it is now damaged, it would have had to have happened after the video was shot…so sometime in the past 3 weeks which would seem to be while the phaser has been on display at Heritage vs before it was handed over to the auction house.

To me it seems more like the rear fins were placed in the proper position for the video shoot as they were simply removed...

We really don't know if the rear of the P2 body had been damaged or not.

The Acrylic emitter was obviously broken.

Hopefully that clears it up.

Heritage does such a horrible job at handling props anything is possible.

I am also sensing the Jein family is auctioning this collection off because they don't understand it's true value. They only see dollar signs

I will ALSO add that if the rear fins were in place there wouldn't be that large of a gap at the rear of the P2 body......

One of the acrylic spacers between the radiator fins is also now missing, which is likely why the fins are no longer on the phaser.

The spacer was present in the video taken 3 weeks ago…

Again….until the prop is auctioned off, we don’t even know for certain if it has been damaged. The photos suggest that it may have been, but it is not certain.

Could the acrylic piece between the fins simply need to be re-glued and has been removed for safe keeping? Likely.

Could the emitter be resting at a cock-eyed angle and simply need to be realigned vs broken? Could be. We have seen a Phaser One fail to fully engage the slide mechanism to push it forward before. I have never handled this prop to be sure if misalignment commonly happens with this model.

I'm thinking the spacer will need to be replaced in order to be displayed properly

Hopefully everything is being stored correctly...

I'm not sure but that emitter or what's left of it doesn't look too good.

You may very well be correct. :)

I'm told that the images were taken VERY recently, and apparently as part of a publicity display for the auction.

But the condition of the prop has obviously changed, recently. Somebody probably dropped it while showing it off.

Well…there are videos of them allowing people to “handle” the props vs. just “looking” at them, so anything is possible.

If the internal mechanisms are intact, then the nozzle HAS to extend when the P1 is installed. So either the brass part which the P1 pushes forward is broken, or the acrylic emitter is.

The catalog mentions the emitter but no mention at all about it being damaged.

"The Type-2 pistol body features a spring-loaded acrylic beam emitter that moves backward as the Type-1 separates from the Type-2 B by depressing the brass side-mounted release button. . . . . Exhibits expected age including scuffing, paint loss and dings in brass handle from production with two mended breaks in the front of the body with loose areas on velcro strip for attachment to costume"

It seems a new player has entered the game (or at least become public) regarding the Studio Auctions midgrade.

Sky Conway is the producer of the STAR TREK RENEGADES and OF GODS AND MEN fanfilms. Which would explain in part how Studio Auctions had access to both Koenig and Nichols, since they both appeared in the latter film.

Anyone got the skinny on this guy? I haven't heard of any controversies involving him. But just because he may not be Alec Peters-level doesn't mean there isn't something shifty there to wonder about.

He's just a TREK fan film producer that gained his reputation with the fan film "Of God's and Men" he was never anyone particularly special. He probably just has deep pockets

Are there members in the Dallas area that are planning to see the collection in-person and can confirm what we may be seeing, here?

Of course, once these items are sold, who knows what kind of abuse they may suffer in the hands of a careless new owner (unless a proper museum purchases some of the items)?
