Just put a pair of tighty whities on your head, same difference. Nobody will notice. It's only a movie. Good enough. :lol

Richie, Steve, and Danita, what a stupendous accomplishment! That's just stunning! :eek

Bravo! Bravo! Brava! :love

Re: Alien Enviromental Suit Progress .Now Ripley Complete Torso pics 4/06/09

I have a green deck helmet I will see about taking appart and letting Danita look at it. She is pretty swamped with the suits right now but never hurts to ask.

Re: Aliens Enviromental Suit Progress pics.

WOW! This is one of my fav. classic space suits! :)

You said a mouth full there, thinking back, I can't think of a space suit that even comes close. That piece of crap from Sunshine was the biggest let down the only other suit I can think of that I liked was the suits from red planet.

I wonder if anyone else could think of a space suit that even comes close to the suit from Alien.

Oh one more thing, are you going to set it up to blow smoke out of the top like in the film ? just wondering.

Re: Alien Enviromental Suit Progress .Now Ripley Complete Torso pics 4/06/09

thanks

Well as of right now the smoke (CO2 ) venting is not included. We would like to but that is most likely be a retro fit thing. I have looked into small smoke machies etc.. those are very costly. We also though of some other iteas regarding the compressed air you used for computers. However the expellent is flamable and being locked in the helmet with electronics could be bad if it should happend to catch a spark..
FYI.. I did that with my PC at work. Can you say FLAME BALL. So don't turn it up side down and shoot in your PC fan area. It will explode.

SO... anyone can come up with a good cost effective Idea.. I'm all ears.
the can or what ever would be contained in the back pack and travel through the rubber hose through smaller tubes as was in the movie.

Thanks
Steve

I know I've seen smoke systems made for model trains. I've never really looked into it closely, but I think it's some sort of liquid.
Although, that may be too small for the scale of these helmets.

Re: Alien Enviromental Suit Progress .Now Ripley Complete Torso pics 4/06/09

Check a major magic supply house.
There is a small portable unit that produces a large puff of smoke with a simple push of a button,

and NO PYRO!!

Irs a special chemical when hits air makes the smoke.

Re-fills avaiable.

The inital unit is only about $100

Love this

I liked the space suit in "Sunshine". :(

But I also like to say.... FLAME BALL! :D

Re: Alien Enviromental Suit Progress .Now Ripley Complete Torso pics 4/06/09

Keep in mind the suit venting is very specific... not a constant fuming, but an occasional pulse of steam. Fwhooos! ... Fwhooos!

I like the Discovery suits from 2001: A Space Odyssey in their various colors, with the controls on the sleeve, the attitude jets in the pack, and what was at that time a very mod shape for the helmet. :love

But, yeah, the Nostromo suits are in their own class.

As for exhaust plumes: the Zero Toys Wizard Stick looks very interesting (thanks for the link, Andy), but would need to be significantly modified for this application. As sold, the Stick requires that you press a button to generate vapor (heat causes a special water-based solution to vaporize), and also that the excess fluid tube be drained regularly. There's also a warning about using the device in an enclosed space. But the technology looks as if it has a lot of potential.

Another big consideration, as Karl mentioned, will be the intermittent nature of the plumes.

The suits of "2001" remain the epitome of movie spaecsuits, it's true. :sleep

In regards to how many helmets were made for the movie.

this is quoted from Kit Freeborn yesterday.

"I think we made 5 full size helmets and then later during production
another three possibly five 2/3rds scale replicas for Ridley's
children to use in some long distance shots to give a sense of scale
and distance (smaller looks further away).

We didn't, as far as I recall, mod any of the helmets or produce a white one, although we did do an all white costume for Sigourney Weaver."

I do remember thinking how much more dificult the the small helmets were
to make and match the larger ones; lots of the easy details (kits, EMA
plastics, bottle tops and RS components etc) were then made for real
at smaller size as well as redrawing all the etch detail again as it
seemed easier to do this than reproduce it photgraphically at reduced
scale (no computers then!)."

Very cool guy.

Maybe this can help shed some light.

I'm amazed that they bothered to make reduced photoetch detail for the kids' helmets, since the whole point was, to shoot the kids from a long distance so that they would appear to be adults. The photoetch details would not have been visible.

Then again who can argue with Ridley. :lol
