I actually finishing this a month ago, but just getting around to posting. This is from the painfully accurate kit from eethan and Wonder Knight, the work they've done is really impressive.
To start, I got the gold Megamix ball (cause it didn't have the stickers applied) painted matte black. Then Montana Gold - Chrome gold with a clear acrylic gloss (Pledge) and finished with matte black in the scribed lines. Also found a stand on thingiverse for some other version of the map.
Silver accents next with rub n buff, using masks made from a leather punch and painters tape.
For the tarnished look I mixed up some dark brown acrylic with water and applied puddles to the pieces, when that dried I was able to adjust it some with a paper towel and IPA. Then to get an iridescent stained look I picked up a couple pearlescent acrylics from Michael's, the orange was watered down and puddled again over the brown tarnished areas - it catches the light in interesting ways that the photos can't reproduce.
Finally, I used E6000 to glue the parts to the ball. Took a while, I would only glue a few parts at a time (parts could slide or twist if I handled it, so I did a few, went to something else, came back, added more. I did the large triangles first, that way if something did move I could adjust for it with the smaller pieces)
