Abc robot... (New pixs added page3)

Well, Christmas is over (sigh) and family have stopped visting so I thought I would start using some of the bits I got as presents. :D

One of my gifts was an ABC ROBOT 1/9 scale vinyl model kit, what an awful kit!.
I Would say it was reproduced in some dark uncaring hole in Taiwan, quality checked, dont think so.

Anyway, after alot of cursing and hot water I managed to build it up, bar a few small pieces which I have no idea where to put due to no instruction. That when I decided to have a go myself, yes a full on model!.

There is no way on gods green earth I could build it at the same scale as the 1/9 kit (Non-nimbled fingers), so i'm doubling all the measurements up, what scale would that make it?.

I've had a bash at the head first using bodyfiller and sculpey and have got pretty far. I have still got a bit of sanding and shaping to do. Im not happy with the gizmo's at the side of his head, so I might dremel them out and redo them abit more acurate, then see what it looks like after a resin pull.
I've just started on his chest armour, built the armature and just in the process of filling it out.

I'm not in any rush to finish this as I dont have any plans on doing any other projects next year except for finishing my big head.

Here's a few pictures of my progress so far, please excuse the quality as I have forgot how to work the camera :confused

Looking good so far. I'd think there'd be a lot of people interested in seeing the progress on this thing and there'd probably also a few who can provide good reference photos as the 1:9 scale kit - especially if it's a poor recast - is a pretty bad template to work from.

Good luck. :thumbsup

Cheers NoHumorMan....
I'm just using the 1:9 kit to get the rough proportion and will probably redo most of the stuff ive started as I get better.

I would love reference photos for the body, arms, and legs if there is any out there.

Great going so far.

If you told us sooner I could have given you the instruction from the original Tsukuda I have.
And yes, I once got the El Cheapo Thai @#$%. before the original. They are all the same crap. Right eye isn't even there for instance.

As for the kit. The head is not as bulky as the movie one. I used it also as a template for my lifesize head project (which is a slow one). But I solely for scale, I had to tinker a lot to get the looks right.

Anyway, Can't wait to see further progress.

I just saw a couple of life-size head kits for sale on e-bay - I had never seen that before, they looked very nice (of course with 60 million things on ebay maybe they are sold all the time and I just have missed them) :D

Yeah, mostly the Golden Armor kits. Ridiculous prices also. Up to 400$ I believe? The do however come from a moviemold. That's about the one positive thing about them.

You know the kit well Sir Round, my right eye was none existent.

Thank for the support guys..

At the moment i'm trying to get my head round a skeleton as I dont want it to be just a solid mass of resin,
not so its poseable, but just to give it depth.

If I remember correctly, the body itself is actually quite hollow... only filled up with tubes and pistons connecting the chest pieces to the hip-area. Or, am I completely wrong?

You are correct, but its figuring out how things like.... his shoulder, elbows and butt attach.

My plan is to use differnt size convoluted tubing and make the pistons and bits, but I need to know (guess\use license) as to what his main frame looks like.

Looks great. Do you have the making of Dredd movie book? It has some full ABC robot pics. You can pic it up fairly cheap, under 10.00. I would highly suggest it. Not to derail but I just saw a new seller on ebay for 200.00. Kit is slightly different. Keep us updated. I can get you some pics if you want?

Greg

Yep, I've got the book. Im just looking for a free screen grabber at the moment that can do frame by frame advancement, as hitting pause in Vlc is proving abit hit and miss.

I spotted that head on eBay too, but shhhh.... it's a banned member or at least I think he is?.

Just a little update...

Made his lower jaw today, had a mission getting the teeth to stay put and filled out his chest a bit more.
I had a little accident with his head, I knocked it off the table and buggered his nose up. :confused
I really should learn to move things well out of the way that im not working on. Easy fix though, to tell the truth I was going to redo it anyway along with his eye sockets.
Think I'll start on his collarbone in a bit..

I know im bouncing around the pieces abit, but I get irritated with the fiddly bits so have to walk away or stamp on it. :lol
I've got achy fingers from getting the Sculpey workable, dont think i'll buy the firm again.

I'll post a few progress pictures in a minute, please bear(sp?) in mind that what you see will more than likely change (guarantee) over time untill i'm happy with each part.

Can I just add that the photos are deceiving, his head doesn't look so slim in person

:lol Funny Sir Round... They did take a little trip though photoshop to be sharpened and desaturate..ed (sp) ;) .

No progress to show as such... I've just dropped a few of the pieces in silcone about 1hr ago so I can do some more shaping using the resin parts as the sculpey bits were not fairing up to well.
Now fingers crossed that the silcone cures as its my first time using it and working out the measures messed with my noodle...that and with it being a 2 part mold :confused :confused

I will update as soon as i've moved a little forward..

Hmm....okay...not panicking....much.. :confused

Out of the 3 molds I have made only one has cured after 9/10 ish hours.
Do I need to panic?.

The 2 mold are partially cured (they almost have a skin ontop), when I dab my finger ontop the silicone is still lifting but not tranfering to me.

I bet my mixs was way off on these two molds....
Mix ratio 20:1 (50g to 1000g) by weight.

I measured up 200g silicone (small parts) and added 10g catalyst, does that sound about right?.

The one that cured I must of added a little more catalyst as its slightly blue® in colour.

If got a little fan heater on them at the moment, is that wise, or should I leave them alone and see if they cure in the next 24hrs?.

This might be about to get messy...ho-hum. :confused

hi mate great work so far count me in as interested :)
the silicone may be a problem i have had the same thing happen to me i left mine for a week and it set to a consistency of jelly which i was able to peel off and repore . but if you try and remove it while its like treacle it will end in tears my advise is leave it until it can be peeled off i doubt it will set properly however leave it and see :)

Oh I dunno, I may have just got away with it. :confused

The top of the silicone is now firm, tacky, but firm to the press.. :)

I'll leave it over night and check again in the morning.

Thanks for the pm's guys... :thumbsup

The molds set eventually, it's a good job they were just for me to get a few casting to work off.
I got them so wrong, the orientation of the pieces, pouring spout and breathers were way off, I know for next time.

Don't talk to me about the casting of the "£$%£*"..... things.

I have got through a kilo of resin and have yet to get a good casting..got loads of naff one, it looks like an ABC scrapyard on my desk
5min setup time.. pah... i'm getting about 2min once the 2 parts are added, i'll figure it out yet.

I got bored so I thought i'd do a mock up using the rough casting and take a few pictures.
You'll notice I got rid of his brains, they didn't have the right look about them so they will get worked back in at some point.
The pistons are not ready yet so I snipped a knitting needle up (hope it won't be missed) and used a couple of dress making pins for the eyes.

I've got to go away for a week on thursday, so won't really have anything worth boring you with for about a fortnight.

Here is a few pictures, would have subjected you to more but someone forgot to put the camera back on charge last time...opps. :angel
