A Stylized MAG - A Scratch Build - Almost Complete

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

Yeah 1000 :)

I have made a jig for molding a sole and just waiting for that to set up now. I have also reshaped the the Heel Cup and mounted it on some wood and plastic to allow it to be Vac Formed.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

The MP soles were a breeze to take off. Do the soles on the Kmag pull some of the foam off the soles even with the heat method?

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

Use a hair dryer on the hottest setting while pulling away at the sole.

I used a hot air gun. Probably a little bit of over kill but they are off now.

Yeah small bits of foam stuck to the rubber and also where I first put my finger nail in to lift the rubber has left a mark that looks almost like a cut.

Anyway, I have been trimming these for about the last two hours and this is where I am up to now.

This is part of the Cold Cast Clear Elastomer pour I did a few weeks back that I had basically written off. Then I saw someone having a go at making the soles look better in the K-MAG thread and I was suddenly re-inspired to use what I had and see if I can't make it work.

I am thinking Shoe Goo here for the glue and will layer it up this time in the parts that I want thick rather than just pour thick in one go.

I found a small vacuum pump for my vacuum chamber and will buy that soon. From there I plan on flattening the black soles, scanning them, tracing them in SU to make a pattern and send that off to the laser cutter. I'll do the same for the 8's, go to the mid point in size between 8 and 10 and call that a 9. I maybe even do the same to the MP shoes.

Once I have the vacuum system up and running, I should be able to cast clear bubble free soles.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

Now THAT has potential.

I'm going to try making my final soles tonight. The waffle print just isn't working so im going to do a sole like the MP but in ice clear blue. I think I can get away with an inaccurate sole considering.

The way im doing the splay is to glue a length of clear rubber along the curve of the shoe for the sole to wrap around. The soles will be cut out a little longer on that side.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

Thanks AlexBC. My waffle is uniform, just that this pair was poured without a Vacuum Chamber and as a result, loaded with bubbles. I already have a chamber and will have a Vac Pump soon. Bring on the bubble free clear soles.

When I do them the waffle pattern will line up on both pieces (back peice will be a single as well) as the mat I use for the mold will be a single for both parts. The parts should be 3mm thick and will bend where I have had to cut these because at 5mm, they were too thick. I am going to have to build up the area between the clear soles with Shoe Goo.

It also looks as if I am going to be able to make 5 sizes - US8, US9 , US10, US11 and US12 (sorry, no half sizes). If the MP MAGs are a half size as I suspect they are (US8.5?), I will make clears for them as well given the amount of them sold on this forum.

Here the pieces laid out.

This is what the pattern should look like.

If anyone want to critique this, please feel free. I will probably redraw this several times before submitting the pattern to my laser cutter as I want to get this right.

I really want to read Watchmen again now for some reason.

I guess I don't have to tell you that you need a quick coat of clear blue on the reverse side of the soles.

That is one cool movie. I have seen it over a dozen times and still enjoy it.

I am not too worried about the "ice blue" thing as my build is not 100% based on the 2011 MAG, rather more towards (if I can) the 1989 BTTF II MAG. From all the images I have gathered, it seems that they had clear soles, not clear bluish soles.

I am going to attempt to stain the white rubber with a leather shoe polish that I've used in the past. This stuff is not a be all to end all products as it will fade over time. If that doesn't work, the (very toxic) polyurethane will do the trick and comes in the right shade of grey.

I am not doing lights BTW but do want to add reflective tape (hopefully in blue) on the sides and also for the NIKE logo on the strap. If I can't get blue, then I will use white as that is available everywhere. Blue seems to be a little harder to get, but I have not exhausted all my contacts yet.

And I have just won the bidding on a Vacuum Pump on E-Bay.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

How thick are your soles going to be btw? The midsole is supported quite a bit off the ground.

Again, this may be the artistic liscence they took with the 2011 as I think the soles on the 89 shoe were flush with the waffle. Must find those reference photos.

I think you will find that NIKE looked at the design and made the soles thicker for the 2011 MAG because they realized that the midsole will wear out faster then the clear if it is all flush. By increasing the thickness of the clear sole, it lifts the mid sole off the ground. This was my thinking when I was originally going to glue the clear over the black.

When I did the pour, the frame was 10mm thick and I wanted the sheets to be no thicker then 5mm but we didn't really have any way to gauge the depth. Mine came out at about 5mm. 3mm would be better as 5mm is too thick to bend, hence why I cut them into smaller pieces.

When I redo these for the 8s and MP MAGs, I will be be creating molds made from laser cut 3mm acrylic. The mold box will be a rectangle with the odd shape removed from the middle. The acrylic will be hot glued to the pyramid mat (which creates the waffle) and I will run a thin (spread with a wet finger) bead of bath room silicon around the inside to form a seal. Using lots of release agent, make the pour (not sure if we Vacuum the stuff first or after the pour) and hopefully have perfect sized, clear bubble free soles. The total thickness should be a bit less than 4.5mm (including the added depth of the pyramid mat) and should protrude about 1.5mm past the mid sole. That is the plan anyway.

My Vacuum Pump should arrive this week. I still need to find hoses, clamps and other bits and pieces.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

Thanks. Tomorrow I will see if I can get some blue 3M reflective tape to do the lights on the sides, then make a start with the Shoe Goo.

Faking the EL using 3M reflective blue.

These were based on the diagram originally posted by another member. Maybe they are sized for the MP MAG, but I think they need to be larger for these US10s.

Faking the EL version 2.

A larger version. I increased the size from 58 x 18 to 70 x 25 and found a drinking glass with the right radius. I've also extended the fake EL a bit lower.

Hopefully once the Shoe Goo is used to glue these down [it will replace the air between the layers] the clear sole will become way more transparent.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

That works SO much better than I initially imagined. Hmm. May have to try this on mine if I skip the side lights.

Yeah, I'm impressed with it and will do the NIKE on the Ankle Strap out of the same stuff by printing a black reversed NIKE onto clear and put the blue behind that.

NICE.....work its almost movie ready cant wait until its done i like that you used another build on this that was a good move it looks great no lie... im almost done with my Custom Mag I will have new pics soon of my revised version Mag finished build.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

Thanks Caloss. Your MAG build was stellar and I look forward to seeing the latest images. How did you go with the Heel Cup? Mine is still a work in progress and why I have turned my attention to other things like the soles.
