I saw this 1970s terrarium for sale and thought it’d make a great movie prop display case. The body needed repainted and the globe was cracked and yellowed. So I drew up my vision in Fusion360 and got to work.
I wanted to keep in mind it was an original piece and didn’t want to harm it. So I made some 3D printed part to hang over the side, rather than drilling into it to mount anything. I wanted it to look like a computer or set piece from Star Trek.
First thing, I wanted to get a new clear ball. Next I wanted to illuminated the inside and the trekkish panels.
The trek panel is hollow and has duratrans graphics so they can be backlit. Then I designed a top to recess a ring light in and cover the hole in top. I added some pinstriping and that’s where I’m out currently.
The remote to light the trek panel and the top dome cover is done. Next is the shelf to fit inside the globe. This has been a fun project.
