A Stylized MAG - A Scratch Build - Almost Complete

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

And yet another version.

At least I got the heating issue with the Vac Form sorted at last. I might actually need thicker plastic as this is a bit thin in parts but the dome still feels solid. It needs a trim and then I might roto cast some resin to thicken up the walls.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

I would say work on evening out the bar you added on the side as it shows through the pull.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

Considering the ankle buckle is quite large it makes me wonder if it's possible to add some sort of roller similar to a tape measure that would pull the strap tight.

First step to homemade power laces.

The buck was not even finished then. That pull was just to see if I had my heat issue sorted and I certainly do now.

The bar is gone. I removed it today. I have also elevated the buck so that I can get a better undercut. With the amount I can get into the plastic now, I'd like to work with a thicker piece.

The shape is so that it wraps around the ankle. The cavity behind is not deep enough to store a motor.

Not a motor but a spring loaded set up like you get in a builder's tape measure. Pull it out and it locks in place. Pull it again and it zips back in. No electrics involved.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

An interesting idea. The winding mechanic in a builders tape is nothing more than a steel coil. There is actually a slide that holds the tape. Release that and the tape winds back in. I don't think it would have enough strength or pull on the strap to keep it tight though.

The retractor of a mechanical seat belt might be better as they are designed to work with fabric straps. It would be physically large though.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

My latest progress on this Ankle Buckle.

Bottom left was OK except there was not enough heat in the plastic to get a really good pull. Also the buck was not mounted on anything and so that limited how good the pull would be anyway.

Bottom right was a revision that I was not actually happy about. The buck was also mounted onto a piece of pine making the part about 90mm high. I got the heat into the plastic (a little too much) and got a great pull, but the wall thickness was a little thin and of course the detail of the part itself was wrong.

Top right and left are my first cloned twins. I didn't quite heat the plastic as hot as previous and as a result, I ended up with a pair of parts with a nice thick wall. I also cut the base of the buck down reducing the overall height to about 70mm.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

This is still a work in progress, but here is yet another version :$

The part on the left is one of the pair I made the other day [the pair can be see at the top of the image in the previous post] and this new version on the right is much smaller.

To make this, I've destroyed the buck of the larger part by essentially shaving 20mm off the overall height. There is still a heap of sanding to do, but I just wanted to see how it was coming along, so made a quick pull today.

Because I actually still like the over sized part, I am also in the progress of making another buck from the black HIPS pull. Basically I am using the inside as the mold and today filled it with Bondo. It is now a nice hard shell ready to be mounted on wood or other base. When it time to break it out, I will have split the plastic.

I also did more work on the Heel Cup and have re-shaped that as well. It is looking much better now, but you'll have to wait for images on that part.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

Great progress on this piece.

I was actually looking over the practicality of making the buckle out of formed leather for a bit of variety. Still researching the different methods that will allow it to be made out of one single piece of leather.

Thanks, yeah it is getting there.

That would work and look good on a leather version of the shoe. You would need to make a wooden form, wet the leather and stretch it over the form and even tack it in place until it dries.

Yep. Just working on some wooden forms right now as it happens.

I AM actually working on a leather version of the Mag. I was able to pick up a LOAD of leather from a friend who owns a company that makes leather goods. Luckily, there's Mag gray and white leather in there so plenty to work with.

WOW I would so love to have a pair of these in leather. Post images of your build PLEASE!

What will you use for soles?

Was thinking of using some Kmag soles for this. Never bought a pair before, only MPs. Are they decent?

I think they are quite well built. It is a shame they are PVC with vinyl. The soles seem good, though like everything, there is room for improvement. Do you think these V2s will actually come out?

I'm not holding my breath for the V2. It may sound strange, but i'm more into building my own than just picking up a ready made pair. With most props i'm the total opposite. But with the Mags I enjoy making them myself.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

I would love to scratch build a pair, and whilst I am fairly DIY skilled, I don't know if I can pull off a pair of shoes.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

I dont think it would be as hard as imagined though. I made my own upper cuffs but while making cloth paterns for my shoes to cover in fabric, you can bent the pattern and it forms a pair of mags lol. I guess its just a matter of finding a strong enough material to make them from. I feel like wetsuit material would be the best for making a completely scratch built pair. Its just a matter of patience I guess.
For help on your buckle, I would say to scale a side picture of the mags *I scaled one and tagged you in it on facebook a while ago* buy after you do that, just trace it from your screen or even print it out and use that as a sizing and angle guide. By doing that it will help out so much. I would also suggest using bondo on some areas to add greater detail.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

I was supposed to print out my pattern onto stock card and have a go at a paper one. I have been too preoccupied on other things to do this. I need to have a go though.

What are your thoughts on light weight canvas? I was thinking the neoprene, but that stuff is hot and I think other more breathable materials would be better.

Re: A Stylized MAG Build

cavx, im sure you can easily make a scratch pair. i dont think its impossible. If I (someone with no talent whatsoever) can attempt it, i think anyone can. The actual mag design is not that complex compared to other shoes apart from the heel cup and ankle strap holder shapes.

ive found that by opening up these kmags, you can see how a normal shoe is put together.
There is usually a thin thermoplastic piece for the toe area, and some similar plastic/cardish type materials placed at certain points around the shoe to give it stiffness.

On the kmag, there is only one for the toe area and one for the back heel area.

I looked at my normal sports sneakers and running shoes, and these seem to have several areas at the sides. On my running shoes, the actual fabric materials are breathable and see through and very soft. They seem to be nylon/tricot fabrics.

With some foam and fabric on top, im guessing we should be able to make a decent wearable shoe ontop of the kmag sole.

I'm still searching for some other materials which could be used for lining. Or i may just go with some soft cotton to be more movie accurate (with the soft tongue thats in the movie compared to the stiff leather tongue in the 2011 released shoe)
