2011 Red Y-Wing: Build Thread™

This color, the grey, yellowish color, and the base white will be bombarded with weathering, and a few "mist coats" so it'll be fun to see the red-orange shift to an orange-ish color and the body into that dirty-ass concrete color. Those mist coats will also "hide" a lot of the decals that were so prominent on the model originally. I only have about 4 high res shots from it's original configuration, but that is enough to get the paint right! It's such a brighter red-orange than the dinginess it exudes now, and it's so cool to see how it would have looked when Kenner used it as reference for their die cast toy!

I have not built a model of any kind in about 20 years......this thread has inspired me to start building again. Amazing work Jason

Jason, the T strip on your build looks pretty off to the accurate Kenner version, will you be re doing it to match this in the future or will you stick with what you have now? Not had a chance to go through the instructions yet but can you add the Kenner variant as a build option? Cheers G

Bloody lovely work by the way, your nephew has really taken to painting quite quickly.

Yeah, I know - the body is a little too "busy" too!

Babies make great airbrush compressors - they are slightly quieter.

Thats a great idea, I may use Freya on the Slave paint up, I could work through the night with her and be there in the morning to make her breakfast :lol

Brilliant instructions, really is the 'Y's Grey Anatomy. This might be blasphemy, but just wondered if considering giving the Red Y some teeth- nose guns - are they the strut legs (F-4E legs?) reinforced with brass tube as in the kit? Sorry if I'm hitting beyond the proverbial ballpark...

Sanjay..

This is a funny bird. What scant pics I have of it before being finished show the red and grey and yellow as very vibrant (and painted much the same way as Blue 1, with a white body), but if you look today, the model is very dingy. I think part of this is that typical hard to replicate "30 years of shelf dust" sitting on the surface, but if you look closely, there are multiple mist coats going on. It's going to be fun and interesting to get the colors in line with what is seen today... everything is about to change! Now, if I can just get some ******* time at the model bench! You'd think it's a holiday or something!!

Jedimaster wins the internet!!!

Awesome, I snorted at that one, brotha!

(Seriously though, I think a dusting of an off-white powdered pigment will work...)
