2011 Red Y-Wing: Build Thread™

The Y-wing landed here in West London thanks to Rebel Alliance drafted stork.

Unwrapping the box and all I could exclaim was 'Good Lord!....this is some kit. Intimidated me? A resounding yes folks. But I like a challenge and this one is just what Doctor Who ordered. The part count looks like something Trumpeter would engineer into their 1/32 line....the only difference is the materials used to hewn this amazing kit. I'm no expert on the Y, but looking at Jason's bible instruction booklet and the references out there my ignorance is easing a little. No bubbles anywhere as always Mike does a supreme job on the casting, and also it was packaged to survive any mode of transit be it internationl, domestic or even outer space. Bomb proof on all fronts and I just hope I can do the model justice when it comes to the bench.

Worth the wait? YES...YES!! .saying it like Meg Ryan when she met that odd looking fellow from Soap.

Thanks to Steve, Jamie, Mike and of course Dave, and anyone else involved that pulled off this Houdini act in Studio Scale.

Blimey...I'm usually lost for words but not this time.

Best

Sanjay

Guys, how hard is it to read? It's right there in the directions:

"In addition, you will need to purchase 8 1/4” ABS TEE from Plastruct, code number T-8. It is easiest to order two of their 4-packs, catalog code # 90086."

I can hold someone's hand, too, if they need more help? LOL.

So I just finished going through the entire thread once again, and I've gone through the updated instructions e-booklet. I still can't find a good pic of the complete set of parts. Since people are getting these in the mail now (mine got here Thursday), it would help us ensure ours are complete. (Not too suggest Mike is a slouch.) Also, in some cases--and this'll make me seem stoop-it--I can't tell where the part ends and the flash begins.

As I'm not a purist, I'd rather build it with a real droid in place of the supplied dome. I don't really care to make all the other changes to make this accurate as a ship that would have had a droid. Is that bad?

Jason, are you lighting this build? I don't see any references to that.

Thanks
Mike Todd

No lights in this one.

I got an incomplete kit when I started building, and got the remainder of the parts as I went along. Hence, my notation for you to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS THOROUGHLY and use the red boxes to inventory your parts, bagging and tagging as you go. The pictures show the parts trimmed.

Why is this proving to be difficult for everyone? The first two pages really spell all of this to for you guys. I made these instructions to a level WAY more comprehensive that what you ever get with a garage kit.

You will not be disappointed, Lee. Oh expect Customs to want their pound of flesh but it isn't too bad. I count it as the price for my passion shall we say. Oh btw..anybody in the UK wanting the elusive ABS T's, I believe EMA model supplies sells them singley, not cheap, but still very much required. Its in metric - 6.3mm to width/height, wall thickness 1.5mm and length 600mm, dark grey and the business it seems.

Sanjay.

Here in Greece I only got charged 2 euros customs on the 2 X-wing kits I got from Frank and from Mike. Surprised they're stiffing you guys for so much in the UK...

Yeah thats true Guy, if the shipping is over the UK limit were elligable i hear, what is the limit now, like £10? Just a tip, NEVER move the UK.

Well, the white is done and dried, final "goobers and imperfections" have been sanded away, and I start shooting the orange-ish and yellow-esque colors tomorrow. Also going to add the decals - pretty sure I can cobble most of them together from the studio scale decal sheet I already made. Anything else will come from the spares drawer.... I probably have all the ones they used on the original, if I look hard enough, unnnnghhhhh

I'm NOT looking forward to hunting them down...

Jason, Will you be giving any advice hints on the painting of these and will you be offering any decals. Excuse me if you have already mentioned any of this.

Almost done with those, just gotta be sure I have all the pipe diameters labeled. Ooof.

Also making painting templates for the head - fun fact - the top and bottom red-orange "swoops"are different!
