2011 Red Y-Wing: Build Thread™

Jason, I get more excited with each pic. Hot damn this is an epic kit. Are those magnets black btw? How come, some coating or just blued?

Martyn... Where? I must be goin blind. If ya mean those half round bits poking out from the wing not the same.

Nope!

Doesn't he mean that big riveted disc on the top of the starboard engine?

Yep!

But really there's a ton of different inspection hatch type dealies in the various kits, I have no idea offhand what that one is or if it is genuinely the same, just looks like it might be and we've already noted the number of Y-wing/Falcon connections...

Your pics are bittersweet, Jason. They look fantastic! Mike's clean castings compliment what look like might have been super smooth masters!

Unfortunately, I'm looking forward to the Gold Leader. If the quality is even half of this bird....then damn, I'm all in.

So people....sign up for this....fill in all 50 slots! And if anyone wants my slot, lmk! I'll be quick to give it up just to ensure the production of Gold Leader.

Joe

What Joe said!! I love what I see and can't wait to receive it!

I've also paid for it but I'd really like to do Gold Leader so at some point, if someone wants my slot, I'l sell it in favor of Gold Leader!!

Keep up the good work Jason!!! :thumbsup

OK forgive me for being a newbie but let’s say a friend has bought one of these but would prefer a gold leader instead but purchased this because of the 50 slot scenario. Apart from the obvious (no droid) would it be possible to convert one of these to gold leader etc or are they so different that it would not be viable, thanks.

No it wouldnt be hard to convert the RED Jammer kit into Gold leader because John and Steve made the kit the way the original ILM models were done : the body has some of the generic details (kitparts) cast in and the other are separate. The hardest point would be to ID and find the correct kitparts for Gold Leader.

Thanks for the info, maybe when the next version is offered i might be able to get a conversion kit. Any way i will be happy with anything but i just like them with the droid :love

I think the only big problem to convert the Red kit into another one is the engines. All the details are molded with the Saturn V halves, unlike the original were each subassemblies were separate parts.

But if your only concern is the droid, you can notice John built the body with a separate part that goes on top of the neck, this way they can produce the Red Y with the gun turret part and later a part with the droid slot. You could just scratch your own droid slot part (easy to do) to put a droid into your kit :)

Agreed Julien, i think a lot on the jammer boils down to the engines, there are a lot of specific differences to a gold Y i think?
Oh, mail you back in the AM bud, internet is useless at home in the evenings right now lol.

Haha Lee we posted at the same time ! :) Yeah you're right every engines were different from Y to Y and even from an engine to the other on the same Y. Of course the starboard engine of Red Y is a bit different !

No problem mate, looking forward to your reply. :)

Thanks i think this is what i will do.

The builder will have to do some mod work to the left (port) steering vane assembly to make it more accurate... I shaved off the detail, re-chipped it, and added the damage it apparently had!

The rear port ventricle master pattern as included in the kit was discussed in detail by John C and I. "Which do we do... the plain jane version that seems to be an after thought on Red Jammer or a Ventricle that matches the Gold versions." We decided to match it to the majority of the Y Wing versions with chip detail. Just like Jason has done here.. the ventricle can be altered to match all versions of the Y Wings. It also allows the builder a personal touch by making a produced kit more of their own creation. Building a model should promote creativity in the builder. This thread is proof of such creativity. Jason will highlight in the instructions on how to convert the port ventricle to match Red Jammer! Those that plan to create one of the gold versions... add a chip here... remove a chip there... is all thats needed to make it accurate.

Looking great Jason!

Steve

Well, Julien and Lee's comments make me feel better. I have plenty of Saturn engines to attempt to scratch Gold Leader engines. The droid slot is easy. As long as the body shapes match, Im content. By the way, Jason, awesome work!!!!!! I dig the damage to the vane assembly!

Joe

Yeah the basic body was the same for all the Y, if you plan to make your own engines, it's all good ! Maybe you'll have to sand some of the panels on top and bottom of the wings also and replace them with kitparts (1/25 Centurion etc).
