It's in the plan; re-creating the missing landing bay sequence cut from the movieExcellent work
Looking like it could be a filming model

Just a bunch of lights strung together, powered by a little box of 2 AAA batteries, from the Dollar Store: $4.00Looks great. What did you use for the blue lighting?
Thanks for the info AdamYour definitely on the right track Joberg! Very good guess as to the depth of the model. i have no info on how deep it was, but Lange and Ordways' notes say it was about 34" wide X 12" tall on the INSIDE. Nothing on depth. The outside was probably just plywood frame and supports. The model inside the 8-foot wide Space Station appears to be square. Ordway said "it only had to be big enough for Kubricks' 65mm Super Panavision camera to stick its nose through the middle".
I'm sorry to say i have never seen a photo of this miniature under construction.
I don't have FacebookTry reaching out to Brian Johnson effects and modelling wizard as he made the models with the team on 2001. He is on Facebook.
H will no doubt be able to help with size and just might have good reference photographs. Worth a try.
Good luck Mr Phelps.
The 42.5" Orion model is 21.75" wide (wing-tip to wing-tip).Thanks for the info AdamI wonder what was the wing span of the 42" Orion model? I fail to understand "The model inside the 8-foot wide Space Station appears to be square"
As for the depth; I believe the model was not completely finished...so no definite depth measurement.
Yes; got it...so the model should've fit into that big setThe 42.5" Orion model is 21.75" wide (wing-tip to wing-tip).
Sorry buddy....'square' is a little confusing!I meant to say :- If it is 34" wide across the span of the opening, then i think it is 34" deep.
Clearer?
And finally, your work is looking REALLY good!![]()
Coming from you makes it a great boosterJoberg,
Just catching up on your new endeavour. It’s Really great. You’re one certainly one of the very rare modellers who had tackled a wide range of the movie’s subjects. “ Hats off to you , Sir”.
Joeberg,Thanks guys. I've done what I could with the amount of "details" seen in the screen cap.
Here's the complete floor with the black panels in place + the pit & crew (1:72 scale). I've opted for a blue light to minimize the fact that the figures are going to be static. The shot emphasizes the arrival of the shuttle Orion in the landing bay; not the pit & crew
The light trenches are open for the moment; these will be covered with a translucent plastic + lighting.
Btw: my phone does a strange thing with its lens; it makes the trapezoidal entrance look like a rectangleI can assure you that it's, indeed, a trapeze

Kind of Searun; more like a command post of some kind. As you know and looking at the original; 4 of those are featured in the bay.Joeberg,
Are the pit crew on the hanger deck trench in the movie similar to an aircraft carrier deck catapult command center called “The Bubble?” Awesome design feature and place to view takeoff and landing.
Thanks Carl...as you can see, the walls are not as detailed as the floor (that was a doozyVery nice, and you work quickly!
