11th Doctor blue bowties / series 6 costume discussion

I could def pull of the 10th Doctor look better - one of these days I will have to get Magnoli's 10th Doctor suit.
It's weird because the way I'm doing my hair right now, it has sort of a David Tennant look to it - so when I dress as the 11th, I look sort of like a hybrid Doctor!

That hairstyle is pretty popular as of right now. I rocked the Tennent before I started to grow my hair out and may go back to it soon. Sorry for derailing this thread.

I started the thread - so long as we're talking the look of the 11th doctor I don't care!:)

So I have my order in with Magnoli for the Series 6 Tweed. Not cheap, but he offered the jacket to me for considerably less than what another great bespoke clothing maker wants for it.

I'm getting the "Otter Wax" fabric wax to use on my eventual purchase of G-Star Blade jeans. This should give them the waxed look nicely - however I DID notice that the crushed black Blade jeans has a BLACK button and not a BRONZE one like we see on-screen - any way of changing this without having to paint it?

The 3D Aged Spark Denim ones have a black button as well - I just sanded the paint off mine. It's silver underneath, but that's closer to accurate than the black.

I like the contrast of the button so we will see what I end up doing when I get the jeans.
I just paid off Magnoli for the tweed so hopefully in a month or two I will have that.

I really wish they would have stuck with the Series 5 PS shirts. Part of me is going to want to do a "hybrid" look, wearing one of my Series 5 shirts with the Series 6 tweed - and the other part of me - the stickler for accuracy, will be forced into wearing a seemingly plain shirt.

Though I still will keep and wear my Series 5-ish tweed, I can always rotate between looks.

I hear ya! I'm all for hybrid costumes... do the bits and pieces you prefer and go with it! A lot of Indy guys do that, so why not Doctor costumers as well? You should see my Pre-production Empire of the Jedi Boba Fett! ;)

Kind regards,
Magnoli

I do a hybrid look for my Indy gear. I rock a Raiders pinch with a LC brim curl. Some of my other gear components are also mixed between Raiders and LC.
But with DW, I would like to try the series 6 look with a regular shirt a few times but I just don't think it has the same overall effect (especially in person) when wearing those bowties with the matching colored shirt.

Sorry for off topic, but thumbs up for that bash/curl, I've got the same one on my AB.

Back onto the main topic, my aztec pattern bowtie should be ready by this Wednesday/Thursday. Cannot wait to finish these up.

Hi all Who fans. Loving all this detailed costume knowledge being thrown around.

I'm trying to compile Doctor costume breakdowns for Series 6. Have found Making My 11th Doctor Costume which helped get me started but there are errors in the breakdowns at that site. Before I start asking loads of irritating questions [username well chosen :$] I need to do more digging so has anyone got an idea which S6 episodes of Confidential spend time in the costume department? Was there a Day in the Life feature on costume? Could be some good clues in there. :love

@Columbo

You probable want to start here: Doctor Who Cosplay and Costuming - Eleven Breakdown - Series 6

And then start asking more specific questions. There are a couple of us here who have been working on this costume for a year+ who can answer your specific questions. That breakdown though is pretty thorough and accurate.

Thanks for that link, I just had an interesting time at that loooong page. Actually I'm a bit timid about posting on blogs and I'm not sure my focus is really the same as theirs? It seems to be about dressing up as characters and what I want to look at is what is worn in the show episode to episode.

For example that breakdown says Matt Smith wears one Shetland tweed jacket. For costuming purposes that's near enough but he wears three different Shetland tweed jackets in the show. There's no mention of this on the other costume blog I linked to above either. I could tell you exactly which jackets are used in which episodes. Does anyone else even care? :confused :lol

Yeah most costuming info on the web is exactly for the purpose of assembling costumes. I think most of us here are well aware that items such as custom jackets, shirts, etc most likely have multiples made for production purposes but from a story standpoint the Doctor only has 1 Shetland tweed jacket. It's just that from a production standpoint there are several different jackets.

I'm sure that there are some people who like you would care about this sort of granular detail though I'm not sure what purpose it would serve other than as trivia. I guess if one wanted a screen accurate costume from 1 (or a couple) of specific episodes. Again though that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me personally because from a story standpoint there are not different jackets.

Still if you have specific questions on those granular details I'm sure there are those of us here who can help you out.

You are quite right for any practical purpose it really doesn't matter. Like my namesake when I see little details that don't add up I have to investigate until I get things straight in my mind. :)

The jacket I have pinned down now and the ties too I reckon. What I hope seasoned costumers could help out on is the jeans. Would a pair from a factory in Italy be much different from a pair out of Australia? I've searched retail sites and seen some where the stitching is black (like the Doctor's) and some where it is very light coloured. Just how much variation is there between pairs of G-Star Blade Slim in Spark Denim?

Well in my opinion the exact color way of G-Stars has never been correctly identified. From my research I have found the following:

The Blade Slim is the correct style. The Spark Denim in 3D Aged are the black waxy version with the very light stitching. There is also a Brace Blue color way that are waxy and have more subtle stitching but still lighter than what we see the doctor wearing. Aside from obvious modifications made such as removing of the front coin pocket and the rear pocket curves, neither of these color ways are exactly right. The brand was identified at least 1 or 2 fashion seasons after the Doctor started wearing them in "A Christmas Carol." G-Star rotates styles and color ways often enough that the most likely scenario is that the actual color way he is wearing was long gone before the brand of the trousers was correctly identified.

The Doctor does however wear a pair of Crushed Black Blade Slim jeans in Closing Time and The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe. These were probably procured while the last series was in production as they were readily available in store during that time period.

Very interesting. Looks like he wears four different kinds of jeans in Series 6 then.

Hmmm, I wonder if the very different ones worn in The Girl Who Waited were chosen because they have no rivets and metal buttons on the back? Not usually important until the Doctor has to sit on a Jag then suddenly very important if I owned that car!

He sits on the American car with jeans covered in metal in The Impossible Astronaut of course but maybe the agreement with that owner was different? Or maybe that's where the lesson was learnt?

I had not thought of that. That is a very good point. are there 4 different jeans? waxed, non-waxed, no metal hardware (TGWW). What is the 4th pair?

I should first say its The God Complex where the Doctor sits on the car of course.

I may be muddled on this I'm no good on clothes and fashion. Ok not necessarily in this order we have Pair 1 the Blade waxy look as seen in The Impossible Astronaut, Doctor's Wife and others. Pair 2 the no-metal-please God Complex jeans. Pair 3 the Blade crushed black in Closing Time and Doctor, Widow and the Wardrobe. Pair 4 also Blade as seen in parts of Wedding of River Song where the Doctor has the eye patch on. Probably elsewhere too. Or are these Pair 2 or 3 again?

Just remembered the jeans in The Rebel Flesh also have high front pockets and a black button so which pair that makes them I'm really not sure. :lol
