I was going to just build it straight OTB as well, but that back wall would call to me at night...
"Make me straiiiighhttttt..."
So I started making the modifications. And of course, the main and upper decks had to be corrected as well. What a can of worms! I also fixed the ship's wheel and skylight. I am already buried anyway. Right?
You can use the "extra" statues from the stand for the two that are supposed to be on the rear bulkhead. (I am going to put it on a walnut base anyway). They are not EXACT, but close-enough for me. I found some correctly-sized vintage window frames in my spares box. They came from an old HO model building. I just have to scratch the center door.
I can't find a good pic of that door. Anyone?
I have been rigging sailing ship models for a looong time. A couple of tips...
-Where possible, I reinforce the masts with steel rods. That way, when you pull the rigging tight, there is less chance of deforming the masts.
-Coat ALL rigging with bee's wax. You can buy a small cake of it at Wal Mart. Humidity and temperature change will make the lines sag over time. The wax will help stop that.
-When you are SURE you are done with a knot, hit it with a drop of ACC. That will ensure that nothing works loose.
-Get a couple very-long tweezers or fine jeweler's pliers. They are invaluable for tying knots behind other lines that are in the way. Which WILL happen.
A LOT.
Practice tying knots with them on some scrap pieces, like the kit sprues... before you get to the model.
