1/72 Black Pearl kit from Zvezda

Not really sure on the approach i plan to use yet.
It will require a lot of washes for the browns and fading.

I'm going though and grabbing screen caps from this site for detail and color reference.

keep in mind the model is more than likely based on the second and third films that used an actual ship and sound stage where the first film used a set on a barge and one on a sound stage so there will be differences.

The color call outs in the instructions have the hull painted Gunship Grey.
I'd suggest collection all the reference you can per film you intend to replicate then plan your approach to colors used and applied.

thanks d-6.

although i can be very anal retentive about details, surprisingly on this project i am not really concerned about replicating any specific version of the ship -- perhaps because i could never really soak-in all the fine details as there are obviously so many little details and subtleties in appearance. quite frankly, i'll be lucky simply to paint it flat black and glue it together without pulling out al my hair! :)

i am building this as a very nice representation of the pearl as seen in all films...but while i'm not sweating movie-specific details, i appreciate the reference simply to get an overall take on the ships basic appearance.

i'll post progress pics -- hope you do the same.

i've started in on customizing a WASA ship to look like Flying Dutchman -- I'll post pics once I have something worthy of posting.

going through screen caps natural is used it's just dirty.
So giving it a wash to darken it a bit should be fine.

Yeah. Darken it down and don't make it all the SAME colour, there should be a range of shades.

For the hull, whatever you do don't copy Zvezda's display buildup where everything is painted very dark grey, then drybrushed with a single shade of brown. That makes it look very plasticy and smooth!

Before you get into washes and drybrushing too far you really want to break up the hull base coat a bit - follow the planking and vary individual timbers with blacks, dark greys and a mix of flats and satins too on different items - especially anything that gets a lot of handling and is therefore smoother, like stanchions and windlasses.

So going through all those screen caps I noticed that there are 4 windows missing in the aft bulkhead leading to the salon, you can see them in this picture. Also between the windows are more of the figures that are on the aft under the salon (easy enough to mold and cast a few since they are separate pieces already).

For some really good images of the decking I'd suggest looking at pictures from Worlds End when Jack's alone in the locker and when they are trying to flip the ship at sunset.

Just going through the screencaps mesself...lots of white on the ship too. Roofs of the cabin especially, but streaks and splotches all over the hull. A lot of what look like rust streaks too.

Always happy to help my friend.

I noticed the lighter grey/white on the bow details.
Lot's of green like the patina copper and bronze get all over the ship.
I think the top of the cabin, the figures and filigree where supposed to have originally been gold.

The figurehead looks like it was fully painted in different colors with fading an heavy weathering.
The original piece from the first film shows signs of red, white, yellow and flesh most of which has been worn away and blackened in spots.

Yep. They basically painted the ship black then threw buckets of other colours here and there THEN went nuts with belt sanders, I think. :lol

If only there was such a thing as a working 1/72 belt sander! :)

Perhaps a electric tooth brush sander.

thanks for all the reference links, d-6 -- i didn't know there was a miniature filming model -- I thought it was all 100% scale or CGI -- very cool.

I went through the first film doing some screen caps.

Keep in mind this is the first film so it is different from the others.

It appears that that wall I said was missing windows will have to be replaced entirely.

Not only are the windows and figurines missing but the door is the double door with a rounded top, the wall is not bowed out in the middle but the entire wall sits at an angle. (best seen after Barbossa slams the doors behind Elizabeth)

Also the skylight over the salon will have to be rotated 90 degrees.

Things that are missing from both versions are the small openings for the sweeps between the lower gun ports, these can just be scribed since they have plugs in them.
Also the ships bell is missing under that little covering on the mizzen deck just aft of the wheel.

Also there is a wood railing around the forward ladder down right before the fore deck, the model has posts and rope.

There is a box/table in front of the wheel possibly to hold charts.

There are also the 4 torches on the deck along with several lanterns and buckets.

Supplies of barrels, crates and sacks litter the decks.

Replacing the wall and part of the mizzen deck when moving the skylight can easily be done by molding part of the main deck and casting thin resin parts, I have done this before on my 1/72 Gato sub.

In some scenes there are a couple boats on deck cross ways.

I'll go though the other 2 movies later to see what's what.

It appears that wall is the same on both versions accept straight(?) in the sequels also the 2 stair cases flanking it should curve outward at the bottom instead of being straight (all versions).

The skylight is correct but the top should be angled to a peak in the middle.(both versions)
They changed the bell tower behind the wheel in 2 & 3.

The box in front of the wheel appears to have some glass panels and maybe some air holes (?)

The ladder to the lower deck in front of the main mast should go down left to right and only has 2 metal posts with ropes going down, the one aft of the fore deck is right to left and has the same wood railing as the first film.

I'm trying to find a higher res version of these blueprints.
It's of the 2/3 version and gives a good view of how the stairs should look also shows the openings for the sweeps.
