1/72 Black Pearl kit from Zvezda

"And revealing how the cannons are deployed by compressed air, on rails, with the push of a button, may shock your senses into an avoidance of other future life realities." - yes, that is definitely a real worry. Every day when I wake up, that one exercises my fevered mind.

Hee! Who wrote that?! :lol

Cool pics though.

Also the ships bell is missing under that little covering on the mizzen deck just aft of the wheel.

That's a weird omission!

There is a box/table in front of the wheel possibly to hold charts.

Damn. You know what - that means the kit's aft mast is located too far forwards. There's not really enough space to have both that box/table AND the wheel forward of the mast. Few other things:

There should only be 4 belaying posts/railing stanchions on the mizzen railings, not 5. And they should be lower and squatter; the Zvezda versions are too tall.

The curved railing at the front of the mizzen deck should have 11 fat turned posts supporting it; Zvezda has (I think) 7 slim ones.

The aft railing of the foredeck has 7 belaying posts/railing stanchions (the things that do double duty for tying off ropes and holding the railing up - whatever their proper name is!) Zvezda has only 6.

The foredeck side railings on the kit make a simple curve into the maindeck railings but there should be scrolls exactly like the aftcastle ones.

Supplies of barrels, crates and sacks litter the decks.

Yeah, and the forward main deck stair is sometimes covered by a grating like the three aft of it, with supplies sitting on top. The rear main deck stair has the same grating over it and no rope railing in the Davy Jones Locker scene (until Jack leaves the ship, it is then mysteriously uncovered).

In some scenes there are a couple boats on deck cross ways.

There's also a scene with a boat stowed fore-and-aft on the port maindeck, right up against the railing and port focsle stairs.

It appears that wall is the same on both versions accept straight(?) in the sequels also the 2 stair cases flanking it should curve outward at the bottom instead of being straight (all versions).

Yeah, that's a pain. Can you bend the inner railings and make new steps?

They changed the bell tower behind the wheel in 2 & 3.

2 and 3 version is less fancy. Pity!

The box in front of the wheel appears to have some glass panels and maybe some air holes (?)

Seems to vanish occasionally, too! :lol

The railings are separate and could probably be lightly heated and bent.
They aren't flat and wide and the stanchions holding them up are straight not detailed.

I just noticed just before the battle in Worlds End the door to the Salon is a flat square plain thing like in the model.

Kinda strange high bred of the different ships.

Replacing part of the mizzen deck to move the mast wouldn't be a problem.
Make a quick mold of the lower deck and splice in some planks.
It's what I plan to do to mod the skylight to first film position, I'll also use it to build a new wall.

I'm going to try to go as 2/3 as possible. The barge/set in the first movie just doesn't seem as definitive somehow, and you don't see as much of it. If you're going strictly CotBP, how are you going to tackle the sails? That'll be really tough - the movie sails are 'ghost sails' done with one layer of sailcloth (or whatever) sandwiched with two layers of gauze.

OK, so we'll need to turn and cast stanchions, I guess. If the inner stair railings aren't flat there's no point using them, the bannisters should be very flat with a horizontal scroll at the bottom. I'll have to make new ones, the stairs really need to be right. There's not exactly a curve BTW - it's more of a bend halfway down; below that the lower section is close to straight.

I agree moving the mast wouldn't be that big a deal, though it would need to have the ratline mounts etc moved also. Have to check if that keeps OK proportions aft of the mast though, or is the entire mizzen too short?

I've been thinking about the sails.
I'll have to do some experiments but I'm thinking tissue paper or maybe some well used dryer sheets that have gone through several loads.

With a quick enlargement of the blueprints the mast looks to be correct (BUT) flat screens stretch things so without printing them out all bets are off.

This site has a few interesting pictures from 3.
Some showing the rigging in natural colors as it's being made.

Several shots of the deck of the Dutchman.

Some more pix of the Pearl (scroll to bottom of page)

Interesting that
026.jpg
shows a post with the line to open the gun port.
I haven't seen it anywhere else.(guess I'll have to re-look)

I did a quick look, they are on the 2/3 ship not on the first one.

Thanks (again) for the refs, D6! I don't see any blueprints on the previous page, so I'm not sure what you're referring to there...?

got my kit today from russia...it was removed from original box and placed into a regular cardboard box -- smaller in size to save on shipping. It was packed well and although the box was a bit banged up, all the parts seem to be intact. I'll give it full inspection throughout the week.

anyways, just thought i'd post for anybody thinking about getting kit off ebay from the russian supplier that has them listed. I think I paid $120 for model plus another $20 shipping.

t

Mine arrived today as well! It is a beautifully done model. I am surprised at the parts count. I declined the $120 cardboard box/ faster shipping. The mailing box looked like an elephant stepped on it, but everything was perfect and intact. Phew!

There are some inaccuracies as others have noted, but overall, a VERY nice kit.

I was a bit nervous ordering from Moscow, but it showed up in about 3 to 4 weeks, as stated.

Highly recommended!

Glad you guy's got them.

I've been laying down layers of latex mold builder on the decking so I can cast up replacement parts for replacing the wall and moving the skylight.

If you make a replacement set...LEMME know! They really botched that rear wall.

Here is a review I sent to some folks on my mailing list:

From Moscow!

It took about 3 1/2 weeks. Not TOO bad.

I would recommend if anybody here is a POTC fan, to pick up the kit for $100 on Ebay. (Yah it is a lot of scratch) but...

-It is a BIG model...27 inches long

-There are an amazing amount of parts in the kit. It is extremely detailed. Probably the best plastic sailing ship model I have ever seen (and I have built a LOT of them).

-The sail castings are amazing. VERY thin and the cloth pattern is all there, including stitching and cleats. Wow!

-The simulated wood grain engraving work is phenomenal

-All of the statuary, figurehead, mermaids, etc are amazingly detailed.

I give it 4.8 stars (It looks to be very accurate, but there are a few odd details that are missing or incorrect, but can be scratch-built/ fixed.) Highly recommended!

Disney nuked this kit, so there are only going to be a handful out there, especially at the price these guys are selling them for. This will only increase in value some day, since the kit will never be officially released. That is why we have currently to buy it from the Russian mafia on the Russian black market...Another brilliant Disney move to put their licensees out of business... I am a BIG Disney-business fan. :angry Thusly:

(Scene: A dark alley somewhere in Leningrad. It is around midnight. The lighting is poor and there are deeply-cast shadows everywhere. The fog is thick and the gloom is overwhelming. Two figures partially emerge from the shadows.)

"Pssst! Comrad!... I need the black pearl...how much!!??"

(Looks around nervously) "Quiet stunad! The Mouskatorneys will hear you!!! Quickly! Give me 3500 rubles! Hurry!!! Hurry!!!"

(He hands the shadowy figure a small pouch, filled with Imperial coins. They tinkle gently in the stale, night air. The sound of sirens, off in the distance, fills the otherwise motionless, oppressive darkness.)

"Here is your high-quality, injection-plastic-molded sailing ship model kit! Recommended for modelers 8 and up! Model cement and paint not included! Now GO! And tell NO ONE of this or we will BOTH be sent to Duckou! GO!!"

(They both disappear into the shadowy network of alleyways that interlace the once-beautiful city of Leningrad... only the dark silence remains...)

fin.

Joined just so that I can ask this question, how can someone in the US get one of these models? Should I wait until an American site starts carrying them or is that not going to happen?

Here is the link where I, and a few others, got theirs:

Black Pearl Captain's Jack Sparrow Ship 1/72 Pirates | eBay

The last time I checked, I live in the US and I got a model, so YES! You could ask the seller if he has any more.

Just do an eBay search. More should pop up.
