1/700 & 1/350 scale BH Cygnus builds

I already have Parallels to run Windows stuff on the mac but even it has some strange quirks when it comes to managing and operating hardware.

I think much of what you are seeing are production artifacts; wax, uncured resin and stuff that was used in the finishing process. I need to get a gallon of acetone and an appropriate container to clean all that stuff before painting but I'm not in any hurry. I have a philosophy of not finishing something until I have all the adjoining pieces so in this case I could only do that with the tower piece. The tower feels like it is dusted with something.

I would have liked to order the observatory base (in FUD) but it remains not for sale. Is there an issue with it?

I've been looking at Dave's armature and seeing how your pieces are related to it so I see several areas where there is sprue. That's actually why I asked the question about it (couldn't figure out how the fuel manifold pieces would be attached). Should the armature just be twice the size of Dave's? I'll probably make a plywood mockup of the stern section just to see how the pieces wrap around it.

Feedback, the interstage does not quite fit into the tower, I can't tell if it is a roundness question or a size question at the moment. That white translucent material is hard to pick out details between pieces. Probably took me 10 minutes to see the notches.

I'm glad I have started on this journey. The thing that surprised me was how small everything is. Over 6' huh? I'da been in serious trouble with the 1/700 version.

Thanks for all your work! Even with all the 3d printed stuff I see these days I still think you guys are pushing the state of the art. There are so many pieces and they are all so visible.

Ah good, you're likely correct. I've only ever ordered a handful of pieces in FUD and I do recall wax being an issue.

The observatory bases aren't printable in FUD I'm afraid - I've enabled everything that can (hypothetically) be printed in that material, I think, but some things just simply won't. Comparing them to some that will, there's often little apparent sense in this.

My armature won't be identical to Dave's - we both worked from Disney blueprints kindly provided by a member here but the models are not the same thing rescaled, they're separate pieces of work from stem to stern. The fuel manifold attaches to the front observatory base part; it has a couple of cradles for the tanks. And to the pipe clusters for the Tanks A and Tanks B fuel modules, of course. Much the same at the stern end.

I have my interstage on order still, but my tower I printed at home. Not sure what fit will be like myself, yet - tolerance may be the issue as I often didn't have time to add any, it's all simple Boolean subtractions which means a very very tight fit most of the time. If so then some sanding will be required.

Yep, should end up just on 6 foot 7 inches.

Oh, my pleasure. Thanks for taking on a copy yourself, I honestly didn't expect any takers even before the horror price revision. It'll be great to watch another model take shape. Unfortunately yeah, there are definitely going to be some issues and jobs of work here and there - you've already seen how I had to hollow the tanks and leave slots for removal of support material or powder, that's a real pain on the main fuel tank clusters; each slot needs a small plastic card patch. And I've found some of the pipes on the main bow sections have gaps to their matching pieces on the mandibles. Why? Who knows. They should meet perfectly, and do in CG. Oh well, it's an adventure. :)

"Too big". As I say, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Incidentally I just noticed the material status for FUD on the bow internal frame part is stuck on 'loading'. So it may well get rejected in reality - suspect it will.

I wish they would give me that status stuff - and of course the opportunity to change the material.

And OBTW thanks to you I upgraded Parallels to work with Yosemite and I'll be snookered, the 3d printer seems to work now.

Re: 1/700 & 1/350 scale BH Cygnus builds

Amen to that; if an order could just be frozen while you make adjustments it would simply 'feel' nicer/more satisfying. I hate having huge boxes arrive containing ONE part.

Good to hear your printer's up and running. You may find the main engines are too tall - for my home printer I split them into two pieces. I can upload that version of the file if you want to try it. They just socket together. (In the end I won't use mine - the printer had too much z-axis vibration so the upper parts of the prints are a little wavy. I could print them slower but it'd take all week - I took advantage of the Pinshape Black Friday sale instead; wanted to check out their quality anyway.)

Jeff, sorry, I've still no word from Dave either.

Arrrgh! My Fuel Module A units have been rejected *again*...bluhhhhh

Yep. I'll probably need to cage it with sprues, too, because some of the fine bits are too weak.

Similarly, one of the two transit tube parts just got rejected, *after* printing. Apparently the other is OK. They of course use the same repeating parts. SHAPEWAYS.

:) When it arrives, be sure to post pics of the various parts. I've still the top spine and bow parts to collect.
Can't wait to see how it all looks.

Just had my Fuel Module A parts rejected for the third time. So that's the Black Friday savings out the window <sigh>.

Not good. As you ordered them on black Friday at a given price and "they" have rejected them after more than a week, I would email them and ask for the black Friday price to be kept for the next order. After all, it's them that rejected, not you. Also, when they accepted the order at the sale price, they were entering into a legally binding contract with regards to pricing. Just something to throw into the mix mate!

No chance, they disclaimer themselves against that up-front. I'll just wait for their next sale. It's the new world order man - companies can do what they want. Get with the times! :p

"It's the new world order man - companies can do what they want."

Uh.. yeah. That's the way it should be. Companies SHOULD be able to do what they want. You can choose not to do business with them. What you should be worried about is when GOVERNMENT (who FORCE you to pay for what they do) can "do what they want"... Oh... wait..... :p

That's right. Banks for example should able to buy and trade worthless mortgages and gamble with people's savings with no oversite. They know what is best for the country. What could possibly go wrong? Reagan was right to remove regulations on power infrastructure. I mean, what do you need regulations on power companies for? It's not like something could possibly go wrong and affect 10 million people in Ontario and 45 million people in eight U.S. states or an entire east coast. And what company needs to be told what things they should or should not be allowed to put in our packaged foods? If people die, they can just buy another companies food products. And what's with government asking for money to pay for my roads, education, police protection (well, for whites anyway) and fire protection? Why should people be forced to buy health insurance when they are not sick? It's not like people that drive cars need to buy car insurance. When people get sick unexpectedly they should be able to get free health care from hospitals and be hounded for the rest of their lives to cover the costs out of pocket which will in turn drive up the cost of health care to cover the losses. How can any of that be bad? We should learn from the biggest governments that have had the most spending (the Republican Party) that small government and minimal spending is the best government (but only when the Dems are in the White House).

Wow psimon. So much ignorance displayed in so many words. Anyway, I can easily prove that all of what you just said is total bull**** (to anyone who really wants to learn), but my comment was simply meant to be a quick and comical response on a simple quote about "new world order" tin-foil hat nonsense. This isn't the place to get into a massive debate about it, as this is a thread about models. But I'm betting you won't just drop it here.

My comment was itself tongue-in-cheek; I'm about as far from a conspiracy theorist as one can get. Shapeways is notorious for customer-service ups and downs; they can be very good but there are undeniably frustrating moments. Nature of the beast with the current technology, to some extent, but there is a corporate ethos playing a part too.

That's all there is to say and we are clearly at risk of straying into politics here. Edit, shoulda said 'dived right into politics head-first', lol. Knock it off please gents. :p
