To be honest, it looks like someone is flying an RC toy IMO. I do notice that the engine deck is that of the 5fter tho. Thats cool!

AL huh? Not too far from Illinois. I've always wanted to see Alabama, now I have a reason to! Keep up the good work guys, this is epic and I'm very jealous. I wanted to turn my movie room / family room in like Palpatines office or the Jedi Council Chamber and get the Courscant skyline printed onto wallpaper, so that when you were down there it felt like a completely different world. Once the build is done you'll have to get some projectors and screens and set them on the outside facing in, or turn the windows into monitors so you can simulate hyperspace or a space battle. Then charge admission!

You should have seen one of SK's photos looking at his garage door from inside the 'pit. I wanted that garage door

I'm seeing all these complaints about the ships in the teaser being land "grounded." I love having something familiar to the eye there to give a sense of how fast and creatively the Falcon flies, personally. We've seen star fields before aplenty- they are so far way. That shot looks (to scale) maybe 40 feet off the ground at most. Great way to show (I'm assuming) Han's flying kick-a**ery at work.

But I might be a little biased

Is it just me, or do the Falcon's engines look better in yesteryear's movies when it was just a solid hot blue-white strip with hazy edges, as opposed to the newer, not-so-bright super-detailed engine seen in the teaser? Or, is it just because she's flying slow and low that it's not so fired-up and bright?

I've had the exact same thought; perhaps the fact it's not flying in space could be the reason why the sunlight engines glow much less than we are used to. Then again, the glow in the OT has always been there, even when it was flying over planet surfaces.

Either way, I'm ready for anything. This is a new Star Wars.

I know you could see those details in the ANH SE when it blasted out of bay 94.

Hi Gang,

An early morning update... After all the Turkey and pie had digested it was time to get back to work! I have begun reconstruction on the new lower panels that will accept the new shelf, new lower light bars and of course add the height necessary to make the cockpit "Full Scale". We've also started to design the new platform.

I wasn't going to bore you with all the "actual" build images - you've seen those before. 2 new panels are created!

Size compare - the panels had to be lower to accept the shelf and light bar. But the panel also had a steeper angle

OK... Maybe just one build pic. The side panel getting done

In place

These are just sitting in place. The original design is/was VERY interesting. These lower panels sit on a riser panel which in turn mounts to the Nav Chair platforms which then rests on the actual platform - in all there are 4 separate platforms in the cockpit. It's been a headache trying to figure it all out...

They always say (in the expanded stuff, yes, so take that for what it is) that the sublight engines are for upper atmospherice flight, not in-atmosphere. Maybe they're thinking that? Other possible explanation would be the fact that she isn't needing the acceleration that you see whenever she's been in atmo before. (OK, Bespin doesn't fit that one) I can make up more...

Either way, she looks gorgeous in aerobatic mode

Yeah, I doubt they would show the engines being that dim once in space. I think we can breathe easy. :p

Theoretically speaking, wouldn't the sublight engines need LESS thrust to maneuver in space as opposed to in atmosphere? Therefore, shouldn't they be pumping out MORE juice flying through atmosphere? I could be totally wrong about this ... Either way, I like the new details on the engine, something they probably would have done back in the day if it was easier to pull off!

OK, prepare for a collective eye-roll here at what I'm doing here.

According to the Haynes Manual (I love that there's a Haynes Manual for the YT-1300 series),

"...[sublight drives or engines] provide more energy output that repulsorlift engines, and are almost always engaged upon leaving a planet's atmosphere"
(Windham, Reiff and Trevas)

Now, yes that leaves a lot of wiggle room there, paticularly with the fine law abiding citizen Captain Solo always has been, but it would provide an excuse for why the light isn't so bright coming out of her engines, and the resulting detail.

OK, you can stop rolling your eyes now.

No, really.

Shoot Chris Trevas a PM, he´s a member here ;)

Hi Gang,

An early morning update!

I knocked out the new lower panels that will help aid in adding the 12" to the overall height. Having done this multiple times, I soared through the process!

I salvaged the MDF panel fronts from the old panels

Still need to add filler to some of the edges, sand then paint...

What's next? New shelf and lower light bars. Then I attempt to put everything back together!

Hi Gang,

Morning Update! Not too many pics but a major leap forward! We have ourselves a shelf!

The shelf is actually two layers with a beveled edge. Once the basic shapes are cut I head over to the router and hope for the best! Like the panels, they will be mounted/sandwiched all together.

I have a few minor mods to make to the new lower back wall panels. I hope to get to that this afternoon. Once the shelves are in place I'll be creating the new lower light bars. I'm going to use a MUCH different approach to these. If it works out, I'll create new upper light bars as well... WHEW...

Stay Tuned!
