1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

I wound having to add some reinforcement to the top canopy panel - spent the rest of the day trying to figure out how to skin it. It's a very ODD shape

Have more pics - but it's all the same stuff...

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Good. There's a lot of "if's, and's or but's" as far as how it might work out, and hopefully you won't have to glue ALL of the plexiglass pieces together (if you can't score half-cut lines and bend the main parts of the housing), as that might be a real pain in the arse. Just depends on what you might be able to find to work with. Might take a little asking around. I wonder if there's something out there that you can buy that's as thin and flexible as the plastic you find on a gallon of milk. That might be TOO thin, but just trying to think of something... Not sure what you can come up with locally, but there's always a website to turn to if need be, like this one perhaps: Natural Polypro Sheet-Sr Plastic Sheets

Hey T,

My apologies for not getting back sooner. I thought about having an aluminum frame fabricated but that's SO far off and so many other things need to be addressed. The other thing I didn't think about until this weekend... I wonder if the frosted panels are diffused enough so the light spreads out despite the wood frame?

Every time you say "Hi Gang" I feel like I'm part of a street gang. What should our name be? The Falcons? Sounds too much like a football team.

How about the MFers? Too risky? ;)

For the life of me, I cannot find it now! But, somewhere on this forum (RPF) in the last two days or so, original blueprints for the cockpit were scanned and uploaded. Have you seen these??? Tons of detail for the panels and "desktops"... I can't find it anywhere... (Mental lapse!)

Hi C17,

I've seen the plans - I don't have them. I think Starkiller has them. :)

I like how well you document your work, set-backs included. Quite the learning experience for all of us.

Unfortunately, there have been too many of those lately... But when you're working with basic tools it can only be expected. I did a lot done yesterday and I'm hoping for the same success today! Fingers crossed

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

As always, I have been following your projects. I have a question for you regarding the canopy
frame. Are all these frames bolted into place? and if so, how do you get to the bolts if you enclose
all of the frames. Just curious on that.

This project is moving right along. You should be proud of what you are creating. It's all awesome!

Hi K,

Thank you for the very words. Great to hear from you again! :)

All the vertical beams are bolted to the horizontal beams with a single bolt at either end. The top canopy panel will then bolt to the two horizontal beams thus bolting all the beams together. As of now, the horizontal beams only rest on the rear arch and window arch (minus the beam that is warped). However, I am NOT enclosing the entire beam(s). I am leaving an opening where the bolts attach.

Note how the beams bolt together

Note where I stopped with the enclosure

I'm hoping for more progress today!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

A haunting (and daunting) question... :)

Think of this as just set work, Greg doesn't need to worry about the outside-in yet. Because after all, then it's the skin, and the corridor, etc.... :D

LOL! Then the floor... which leads to the gunner station, which technically leads to the exterior, which leads to the radar then all the way around to the landing gear...

- - - Updated - - -

Very inspiring stuff here, I check in every now and again on this thread and the attention to detail is amazing.

Thank you very much, Sir. As with any project you wish you could move faster and get more done - but she's getting there. No limbs or digits lost yet!

Thanks again for the kind words and as always - more to follow! :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Yeah, I know in the films it looks like there's some kind of thin metal frame around the edges of the bar lights. If that's too hard to fabricate, then maybe just paint thin strips or pinstripe the edges of the bar light housings once assembled.

For your reference whenever the time comes...

There's so much to look at on the "Interstate Plastics" website, it's hard to know where to begin, or what would be best. Right off the bat, I did come up with a few items that might be worth a closer look. There is probably a lot more to browse through though...

These two (under "Materials: Polypropylene") stand out. The first one (copolymer sheet) is described as being "more flexible" than the regular Polypro sheet I have listed below it...

Natl Copolymer Polypro Sheet Plastic Sheets

Natural Polypro Sheet-Sr Plastic Sheets

These three are under the "Signage, Graphics & Display Plastics" part of the website, note the different translucences...

White 7508 / Wt020 Acrylic Cast Paper-Mask (Translucent) Plastic Sheets

White 2447 / Wrt31 Acrylic Extr Paper-Mask (Translucent 55%) Plastic Sheets

White 7328 / Wrt30 Acrylic Extr Paper-Mask (Translucent 32%) Plastic Sheets

It would be great if you can find something locally where you can get your hands on it before purchasing to see if you like it, but if you don't like anything you find, then maybe try something from the website above, or elsewhere.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

I've been reading the whole thread and you Sir are my hero! WOW! Amazing job on that difficult project. As for skinning, you can always cut grooves into your panels (mdf or others) to bend and round any forms/angles easily.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang (Nerfherders),

Well... The beams on Han's side are FINALLY finished - minus the window channels. The upper panels were ALOT tougher than I thought they would be especially the oddly angled shape window/beam.

The very first thing I did this morning was fix that horrible center top panel... Much better
20131014_142215_zps792fde9e.jpg

The panel required screws to adhere to the frame - it was NOT easy (this whole area is covered by a blanket so I'm not worried)
20131014_142227_zps807340ff.jpg

I then skinned the back beam
20131014_135738_zpsb436578a.jpg

Then got started on the oddly shaped panel - another difficult job

Whew... tough one

I added a center support - the angles on this ARE CRAZY...

Another panel requiring screws - it was tough

HMMMMMM... not quite fitting. Note the slight overhang on this side

Oh yeah... needs to be address

After fiddling with it for a few minutes... I added MDF to the overhang side and that tightened it up

Nice clean lines

Still need to get to those window channels - IMO that really finishes off the look

Lines up? Pretty good

Hi Gang,

I almost forgot...

And then for fun...
Cockpit01_zps3dbbab21.jpg

I have two more weekends until the GMX show in Nashville. Let's hope for the best. Also... I'm considering making a trip to the Dallas / Ft Worth show later next year. It's a 10-12 hour drive... but I'm DEFINATELY considering it :)

More to Follow

I'm sure Chewie would be appreciating the extra headroom while it's available :)
Remaking that top panel was definitely a good move, looks perfect now (circles are important)

About the corridor entrance to "the pit"... Stumbled across this from the Legacy toy
8ahygudu.jpg

Interesting. The Hasbro/Lucas "approved" guess of what the door may look like.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

In the films there was no door in that hallway anyway, it was open from the ring corridor to the door on the cockpit. So I'd say this is supposed to represent their version of the cockpit door.

Hi C17,

Interesting take on the design of the door entrance. It's very similar to a sketch I did a few weeks back - Padding and panel included. I don't think I'll get to the back wall before the GMX show. But that's ok, it gives me more time to think about what direction to take. Great find! Thanks
