1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

WOW SK, this blows me away everytime I check in! Love the canopy and the pics from the builder faire. (y)cool

Hey BD,

Thanks! This weekend was alot of fun. I was just looking over Starkiller's 3D model of the canopy and SHEER panic set in - I thought I had messed up the vertical beams!!! But I checked out screen grabs from ESB and I think I'm ok... His model is the ANH version and as we all know, the designers made substantial changes to the ESB version. I wiped the sweat from my brow... whew...

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

I've been pouring over pics / screen grabs from ESB (after that scare re: the thickness of the vertical beam) and it looks like some MAJOR surgery will have to be done on the front window arch. As I explained, the window channels do NOT line up between the arch and the vertical beams. So, I'm going to add/remove material to both the lower inner/outer edges and then add material to the top hoping everything lines up. I hope that made sense.

Note how the middle of the window arch (color change) is NOT aligned with the middle of the top of the side panel

Here you can see how much "taller" the beam is compared to the window arch. I have to add angled shims before skinning the window...

Lots of little details to take care of. :)

You know what would be really cool? if you built a huge box for the whole cockpit to fit in so that you couldn't see it from the outside and ruin the surprise. Then when you get it all lit up and walk in through the door, you'd be in the dark except for the cockpit lights. And you could have a projector throw a star field, asteroids, and hyper drive effects and sounds against the front and sides of the box like a movie screen. You could even turn it into a flight simulator.

I like it!! A real Flight Sim platform would be beyond imagination!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Here is the major change coming to the window arch. I have to remove material from the outer edges (black dotted line) and add material to the inner edges (bright yellow dotted line) in order for the side nose panel window channels to align - all while still trying to maintain a circular feel (yellow transparencies).

Shouldn't be that difficult, right? HA... I say that now...

Honestly my favorite part would be, when he's got this done, for him to watch just one of the movies projected on the garage door from one of the pilot seats while he's chomping on popcorn. For a diehard fan, really what's better?

Harrison Ford: Yeah, I acted on the set.
Greg: Yeah, I own that set.

You should rename the name of the thread 1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica anytime soon. I think it deserves it :D

Not to state the obvious (and I'm sure you've considered this), but can't you kerf and flex the piece to fall into spec?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Even if you couldn't get a flight-sim running, it would be wild if you could project the asteroid field sequence from ESB as an endless loop on a screen. That would be soooooo cool...

Hi PianoManPJ,

I have to admit, that would be wild! I'm sure there are a few folks out there who have the knowledge and hardware to make something like that happen. This could turn into a multi-use display: 1) Stand alone display piece with blinky lights and toggle switches 2) Drape some black fabric over the canopy and projector then fly off to the Lando system... :)

That. Would. Be. Awesome! :) And we all know what movie it would have to be - there's only one!

Greg: Yeah, I own that set.
Harrison Ford: Yeah, but I make more money than you...
Greg: DANG IT!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Greg, you know that you have to rework the front panels to match the perfect circle of the front window?! ;)

it is not "omega shaped" ....

It's funny you mention that. Starkiller originally started the thread (I didn't have an account at the time) and I was going to forward all the build pics to him to post to reflect his 3D cockpit (I think that was why we originally started it... lol) Then the project exploded into this. But, you are correct, we could change the thread name. :)

Hi L,

I wish... Unfortunately, it's not that simple. The arch is VERY solid (it does flex but nothing like what you're suggesting). Also, if you notice in the pic below, the bottom of the arch marries up against the top of lower nose panel (per Starkillers 3D model) NOT the upper panel. The lower panel tilts outward while the upper panels tilts inward. Also, the top of the lower panel is dead center for the arch.

NOTE: THIS IS NO WAY a reflection on Starkiller's work at all - this is an oversight on my part. I NEVER thought I would have gotten this far/deep into the project. :) I think my changes should be ok. And remember, there were ALOT of greeblies added along those exact lines - in my opinion, to hide those imperfections.

That's the plan... Right now I'm going to cover the body with grey bed sheeting to give the look of the outer skin... but I'll definately get to it!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi there,

I was at the hospital yesterday and noticed these lights.
Not sure if they are accurate - they don't look like they have the ribbed lenses - but there is the manufacturers details on the label, which could be a help.
I make them about 45mm in diameter. Hope this is helpful!

I would do this job which something that is called "Bühnenmolton" here in germany, a fabric used for stage dressing. A thicker cottoncloth, with the advantage to be less inflamable than usual cotton. it is not much expensive an it comes in a wide about 3m (aprox 10 feet)

WOW... Looks like good stuff. There are several fabric stores in town. I'll check to see if they have anything similar. Ultimately, the plan is to skin it, but this looks like a great temporary skin to hide all the wood (and imperfections).

THANKS!
