Cancelled my cable years ago. I know loads of painting techniques, just the first time I've heard that one. ;)

The common one I use (as well as most professional painters I know) is a very light coat of paint first to seal the edge without bleeding and then a regular coat after. It's quicker because you don't have to wait for the paint to fully cure as you're using the same colour.

This other way takes longer but avoids any chance for error. :thumbsup

That's the same tecnique I used until the Frog tape became available. But with anything, you never want to just blob the paint on...

All this talk of pin striping has me aching to get home and work!

Howdy King...Again, I love what you've done, I was mainly thinking of other ways to possibly "skin the cat" so to speak. :)

What I am seriously considering is building a smaller scale cockpit for my son...Maybe 1/2 or 3/4 scale...Just as a test bed for some of these other ideas. To see if they could work. If they do, then someday I might attempt a full cockpit build. But that would be a little ways off.

I am curious about your paint colors...If you covered it earlier in the thread i must have missed it. What colors of grey are you using? And how close do you believe they are to the original?

Hi J,

I based the colors off of Starkiller's 3D model. I printed a copy of two of the panels on photo quality paper and then had one of the local home improvement stores get as close to the photo as possible. I don't think anybody really knows for sure what the colors are.

If you're thinking about doing something for your son (which is awesome) how about a cockpit style head / foot board? The cockpit surround could be the head board. You could incorporate working overhead lights along with the regular LEDs and switches. Create small compartments for all his "stuff".

Two swivel based side tables could act as the center console (more Star Trek-ish than SW). A foot board could be the front of the console with buttons, lights, etc... Just an idea, but I think it would work and be pretty cool!

That's actually a REALLY cool idea...I had always thought about turning one of the pulls from the landspeeder molds into a twin bed, but that thing would take up the whole room due to the wingspan.

This on the other hand...This could work well...Hmmmmmm

One other question...How big is the largest single panel in the cockpit? I'm going to check with the sign shop that I normally work with and confirm that their engraving machine would handle the size. It's probably not an issue with the smaller scale build, but I'm curious as to whether or not they could handle the big boy build as well.

This is why I suggest a stencil. If you made it out of MDF or plywood you shouldn't get any bleeding. They even have those plastic boards for trim that can be used. A router bit would cut the slot and it would be straight.

I was wondering about the colors being used myself, because in all of the pictures you're posting, the colors seem to be unusually bright. I don't know if that's partly due to the camera flash, but to me, they never looked that bright in the movies. Of course, those cockpit scenes in the movies are supposed to be set in the blackness of space, meaning dark cockpit with little light, but anyway... Myself, I'd darken both of the shades of paint being used (for the Chris Lee Falcon ~ not for yours, which is too late to even consider I'm sure), if it were me anyway. ...but it ain't me, and it ain't my project, so in the words of Ben Kenobi, "You must do what you feel is right of course." :lol Something to maybe ponder for when the Chris Lee MF cockpit is built...

Starkiller was pretty thorough when finding the colors for his 3D build... I think Chris is ok with it... I dunno... lol :)

I think the colors are actually pretty good...

I only asked because I was wondering where they originated from. Two things are going to make it look "right" to what is seen on screen. Those are lighting and weathering. I know that the cockpit is definitely cleaner than the rest of the ship, but in Star Wars land EVERYTHING has a certain "dirt under the fingernails" look to it... Some light weathering of the finished walls will tone it down a tad, and make everything feel more real and lived in.

For example, your dry brushing technique on the back of the console looks amazing... It is just enough to make that part pop nicely.

The Back Boxes were a lot of fun to make and weather. I actually started to weather the front of the console and pulled back because i wasn't sure if it was a good idea.

I'm not sure if weathering the cockpit is such a good idea. The only battered area I've seen in the cockpit is the padding around the door - where Han hits it to turn Falcon on - CLASSIC MOMENT! :)

I've looked at all the screen grabs and unless I wasn't paying attention I just don't remember seeing any real weathering... I'm more than likely wrong... LOL

Also, lighting played a major role in the colors. The brightest we've seen the cockpit, IMO, is when they escape the Death Star and fight off the TIEs. When Han and Luke are chatting - that's the brightest I remember. Even the scene when flying to Bespin, it seemed to be dusk... Make sense?

Yeah, I don't know about weathering the cockpit either. Once people start touching things it will be weathered in no time flat anyway. :unsure

Now in the picture above, the colors look better than in other shots, so yeah, there must be a lot of tom-foolery going on with the lighting in the movies, as opposed to the lighting in your garage, camera flash shots, etc. One of these days, I'll go back and look at the films again, in particular the brightest scenes, such as Chewie entering the cockpit in Docking Bay 94 on Tatooine, etc.

It's just one of those many many many things we may never know. I understand why, but it always blows my mind seeing the old Elstree Studio backlot pics with pieces of the Falcon, Raiders of the Lost Arc set pieces and the Landspeeder just tossed away... SAD...

It's funny you say that... One toggle switch already broke after 10 uses... So, yeah... I think a natural weathering will occur. :)
