Cancelled my cable years ago. I know loads of painting techniques, just the first time I've heard that one.
The common one I use (as well as most professional painters I know) is a very light coat of paint first to seal the edge without bleeding and then a regular coat after. It's quicker because you don't have to wait for the paint to fully cure as you're using the same colour.
This other way takes longer but avoids any chance for error. :thumbsup
