Guardians of the Galaxy

James Gunn On Guardians Of The Galaxy - Films - ShortList Magazine

Setting the tone

“I love Blade Runner, but since then, space has either been very dark, or very green and I wanted to return the colour that used to exist in science fiction. People think it was all green screens, but we actually had some of the biggest sets ever. Our prison set was made of 350,000lb of steel.”

Live-action meeting CGI

“A couple of the actors have dated in the past, but I don’t think Chris Pratt [who plays Peter ‘Star-Lord’ Quill] and Bradley Cooper [who voiced Rocket Racoon] have ever met each other. My brother Sean played Rocket on set with Zoe [Saldana, who plays Gamora], Chris and Dave [Bautista who plays Drax], then Bradley came in and took what Sean began and finished it off in a recording booth.”

Peter Quill being Han Solo-meets-Indiana Jones

“As much as I like Harrison Ford, Chris Pratt is able to do more than him. Honestly. He’s a true modern American hero. He lost 80lb of fat and gained 20lb of muscle for this movie, I didn’t even want to audition him at first. But he was so good I thought, ‘If we have the first chubby superhero, then fine.’ He wouldn’t have been the first actor in Hollywood to have a CGI six-pack.”

Choreographing battles

“The fights are really important. Zoe is a ballet dancer, so that type of movement is natural for her, but Karen [Gillan, who plays Nebula] isn’t the most athletic person in the world [laughs]. It wasn’t just the fights between people – the space battles were choreographed, and were a lot more complicated.”

What makes Guardians so different

“There’s never been a movie like it. It’s fun and funny, and surprisingly dramatic – an antidote to overinflated blockbusters. And if you don’t believe a movie with a talking racoon can be dramatic, you need to see it.”

When was this a comic book? I read Marvel religiously up to about 1990 and I've never heard of it. This is the one Marvel movie I have no notion of going to the theater for.

Same. Never heard of them until people starting to spazz out on the internet.

Saw the trailer, facepalmed, classified it as a movie not to waste money on. It's a comedy/action movie that's piggybacking on Marvel's latest success. Which is fine, just keep it away from the A rated movies like Avengers/Iron Man/Thor/etc.

The original group came out in the late 60's I believe. Yondu is the only member that will be in the film. The current group which the movie is based on (at least most of the team) came out in 2008. They were probably the most integral part when it came to taking Thanos down in the comics. And I think it's safe to assume that this where all the movies are leading to. A big showdown against Thanos.

If you want a good read, check out The Thanos Imperative and the War of Kings arcs which feature the Guardians and will most likely have an influence on the movie.

Listen, its important that Marvel get some new characters out there as the franchise has pretty much matured. Iron man has had his 3, The Cap and Thor 2, and next year the second Avengers. Depending on contract renewals its going to be difficult to keep it going WITHOUT bringing new blood in. There are a few stories left to do I'll admit, but its whether the stars want to keep on doing them for another decade. most seem to want a break at the very least.
So its vital that they start to build a new fan base on the back of new characters and I've got to say i admire the gamble they have taken with this one. They have effectively "stolen" a march on Star Wars with this superheores/ space opera/ action/comedy storyline and it could be colossally successfull as well as helping to set up the whole Thanos story arc. It feels right for the time and i'll admit although it seems off beat it has a great vibe to it and has a presence I've not felt for along time (as a film anyway).
Everyone now knows much more about the Marvel universe thanks to the huge main stream success of these films and its lifted the sniffy "comicbook" stigma that used to be attatched to them, these are epic film events now that many enjoy as entertainment. Lets push that envelope a little further I say!

Well with this and Dr.Strange coming up,never mind Ant Man,I'd say their pushing the envelope pretty hard;next would probably be the Nova Corps and with Strange onboard I kinda hope Ghost Rider and maybe Blade get something decent.

I dunno, I just can't get my head around a talking fighting racoon. Isn't this the same board that damned Star Wars to hell for having a talking 6 ft rabbit in the comics? What's the difference?

Rocket is bad ass. He is an established character in comics for many years and in the Marvel universe It just works really well.

I am so looking forward to this movie. Marvel has kinda been burning me out with all the mainstream superhero movies. I mean, don't get me wrong... I love the old standby's. I will be the biggest Iron Man fanboy until I die. But the theaters have been so saturated with the Spidermans, Captains, Iron Mans, and X-men for so long now. I am ready for a whacky sci-fi based adventure movie. GoG is a perfect (slight) change of pace right now. Cinema NEEDS this movie right now.

I just don't see this grossing as much as the others simply for the fact that most people have never heard of it. And since 99% of average movie goers do not sit through the credits for that last scene, there is not really a way for Joe Schmo to even know this is related to the Marvel Universe (until they see it, that is). I've seen the previews on tv and if I didn't know better I would never have associated this with the Marvel universe. From first impressions of the previews it just seems to be some goofy space movie with a raccoon and a tree guy.

I'm not trying to knock the movie, I honestly do hope it is as good as the rest of the Marvel fare, but I just doubt that I will be going to the theater for this one since I am not familier with the contents of it.................Not to mention the fact that I have to drive 50 miles to get to the nearest theater......

That what they said about Green Lantern.
