You and him/her going stupidly about youtube videos makes me feel the same way

So lets please just get back to talking how good or bad TLJ was. Not about some youtube videos made by idiots... There are no idiots here..

Really?, you seem to be having a wonderful time playing both sides

Been an interesting read this thread. I've had many different reactions to this film and what I think about it. At this stage I'm feeling a kind of resignation. I'm OT generation and I don't think these films are really intended for me; I'm not really the target audience.

That's why the things that are beloved to me are not being treated the way I would expect. The director has been very clear about wanting to move away from all the old SW (chuck the lightsabre) and is quite happy to cherry pick bits and pieces from the existing films (the awesome falcon chase through the crystal caverns with the BEST soundtrack) on the way to get where he wants.

The stuff that's important to me (WTF with admiral Akbar, Han's death, the absence of a Han, Luke, Leia triangle that was the core of the OT) ain't important to them. So accepting that has made me enjoy the film for what it is and not what I think it should be

+1
And I think alot of us OT fans who liked the film.. took it the same way..

Also..I have to admit.... reading the summary and the spoilers, (although having alot of issues with it...if you read my post) put me in a mindset to accept this as a next generation SW film..

I'm going to throw this out there......

If if if if if!!... It were George Lucas that wrote and directed this...

Would it still be so divided?

Or is it because it's "Disney"?

Be honest with yourselves..
I would gladly have George Lucas back. In a heartbeat.

Because although I know it would be weird, it would at least be a space opera full of mysticism and wonder.

Yes and would have never left the home of the original creator... good or bad

You know another I just realized about this new series?

We have yet to see the new crew in the same room together. There is no "team" here.

Didn't Rey meet Poe for the first time at the end of this flick?

One of my issues with this new one is that although they are breaking down the old definition of star wars, they aren't replacing it with anything. In the same way that snoke doesn't have a backstory, nothing else does either.

Remember when obi wan told like about his father and the clone wars? How rich was that? In a few sentences he conjured up images of an epic time that you could picture in your head.

Even these locations feel strangled of life.

I wanted to mention something about a specific plot point in the movie. Luke admitting he thought of killing Kylo when he saw the darkness in him made me think of this philosophical debate:

If you could go back in time and kill Hitler when he was a baby, would you do it?

To me, that's the point of it. Luke, knowing all the death and suffering that the Sith caused, seeing Ben turning into a Vader, knowing the power of the dark side, is the same as the old question of what would you do if you were in the position to rid the world of the threat of someone like Hitler.

That reminds me of my all time favorite line from doctor who.

"You've got a time machine. I've got a gun. Let's kill Hitler!"

Maybe they dont want to replace it...Maybe this a brand new SW story.... new powers.. new motives..new characters..... not "new".. but a stand alone trilogy or Saga

And that was the redeeming quality of this movie... and the only reason i half way enjoyed it..

Come on now - Rose tells us her planet was strip mined by the Fo and they tested weapons on her people.

Poe asks if Holdo is from that certain battle

Crait has a big cool base that was made during the Rebellion and abandoned when the Empire got to close to it

I could think of a bunch more that made me what to know more about things that we don't see in the movie.

And this is why I believe that this is much more than just a trilogy

Thought it was a good movie, but took issue with a lot of things as a SW fan...
It's funny.

Just like the force awakens and rogue one, I took less issue with this as a star wars fan and more as a film fan.

I want to see this stuff fit in with the incredibly unique space opera that Lucas envisioned throughout six films and an animated series.

I'm not as concerned with the story of these people.

I was just watching a collider video (something I never do) and they were reviewing this as if it we're a sports game and Rian was the coach.

They weren't reviewing it as a film. Instead they were reviewing what the characters did in it.

Had to wait to get to a laptop... I wasn't going to type my thoughts on a mobile touch keyboard...

Watch Auralnauts. They make fun of Kylo Ren with his mask on. It was cracking me up watching the movie. It was priceless when Snoke tells him "take that ridiculous thing off".

I felt like the movie just had no real flow. It kept jumping back and forth between Jedi island with cranky Luke refusing to train Rei and the little ships being chased by huge ships that couldn't close the gap despite being much larger with more "engines". That alone seemed stupid to me.

The thing I both liked and hated was that they seemed to make it as if Luke wasn't a very powerful Jedi, which was pretty much true. His training was half assed and the only reason he won against Vadar was because dad was holding back, because Luke slipped and let his anger get the better of him, and because Vadar tossed Palpatine into the pit. He couldn't face his nephew or Snoke because he knew his **** was weak. He lived in exile knowing he never achieved the level of Jedi that the ones of "legend" had.

But I had some hope that when they faced off at the end he would unleash the wrath and crush the walkers like he did in the Dark Empire book.

The route they went was appropriated for the direction they're moving the series but not satisfying for someone who grew up on the original trilogy. It kind of deflated one of the things that made the OT so awesome for me as a kid. To reduce him to basically a failed hack was pretty harsh. I suppose if he rolled up with all OP'ed, they could wrap up the the next movie by just making him a hood ornament on their ship as he crushes through the First Order like a Jedi snow plow.

Casting + bad directing
General Hux is awful. The humor the tacked on in this one made him slightly more tolerable but still a lame character.
Laura Dern was a horrible choice. She doesn't come off as someone with any military expertise. Honestly, anyone probably could have played that character but she just flt wrong in it.
Even Poe Dameron is poorly done. Oscar Isaac is great, but his acting feels forced in these movies.
Finn, as someone else stated, served no real purpose in this movie. Poe could have gone to the casino. I was pretty happy when it looked like they were going to off him. I thought... OH MAN... they're actually going to kill of a main character? Boo.
And what was the point of Snoke. I think everyone was hoping to get some back story that would connect him to the other trilogies.
I hope they're holding back on Rey's backstory and she wasn't actually the equivalent of a crack baby sold for some rocks.
