YODA RETURNS TO DAGOBAH!! -see post #277 3-14-12

Re: YODA'S RETURN TO DAGOBAH!! -see post #99 5-10-09

Anyone know where I can find an interesting tree trunk (one that is all twisted and knotted) that I could use for a display base, and isn't infested with all kinds of insects?

when i was a visual manager with Bass Pro Shops we would dig them up and like them sit in the sun for awhile after we sprayed them down. It got out most of the buggies. We didn't want them to damage our taxidermy

Gino, have you tried looking in pet shops? There are places that sell huge pieces of driftwood for the really serious aquarists (i.e the Monster fish collectors). You may want to explore online aquarium retailers too.

All the wood is pre-treated so you wouldn't have to worry about it being infested with bugs or anything. Might be worth a shot ...

I just pm'd you a number of links to suppliers of driftwood and taxidermy bases.

Guys, Thanks for the compliment on both mine and Ginos efforts... I sculpting this years ago and Gino has done the BEST finishing I've seen on any Yoda thus far. My next one, I hope, will be much better :love

I'd also try reptile shops, they often have interesting pieces of old twisted wood but I'm not sure that I've ever seen any large enough for a 1:1 Yoda though.

Gino,I was reading your prop archive about how you built Yoda. I was interested in the foam body you built. Do you have any PICS of what it looks like or patterns? It's the last thing I need to do to finish mine.
Did you switch the string on the necklace for leather? What would you recommend? Round leather cord or flat leather?

Re: YODA'S RETURN TO DAGOBAH!! -see post #99 5-10-09

To be honest I would do what the experts like Tom and Bjorn would do... create a tree root display from scratch... Just study the forms and build it in Styrene and add layers onto that or sculpt onto it... one would be extremely fortunate to find something on this planet that would look much like Dagobah... plus if you made it oneself one would have much more control over the look and feel of the display.

I don't think I would entertain the idea of a sculpted tree. No offense to anyone but I don't believe that anything would be as good or as realistic as the real thing.
On the dagobah set, there were tree parts, roots, and dead logs all around.
In this picture, the dead tree was actually on location and I just set the puppet on it for the shot. I would have loved to take it home, but again, I'm sure it was TOTALLY infested with all kinds of sick bugs.
I just want something that looks just like it, but totally clean and safe.

Here is the pic I'm talking about:

Hi Gino,

I'm new here and haven't posted much yet, but one thing I did in creating museum scenic displays might help you out. If there was a particular natural element such as a fallen limb or the like, we would bag it in the largest plastic bag we could find and drop in a small bug fogger. You need to close up the bag, but leave some way for the excess gas to escape. When the fogger has penetrated the wood for several hours, it would be safe to remove from the bag and inspect. It will have to air out for quite some time, but is very effective. You could, if the limb is too big for a bag, bring the limb into your garage and bug bomb it there as well. We did a large number at one time that way and it would kill all the creepy crawlers like that. If you are doing it in your garage, the atomizing or fuming bug bombs are the best for deep penetration, but the foggers do work too. To be safe, I'd inspect for any bugs and if you still see live ones, fog it a second time or even a third. You may see motion imediately after the bomb because the bugs are drawn to the surface to run from the fumes. That's the time to hit it again! the idea is that you may be driving them from deep inside as well as just under the bark.

Hope this helps! I know how frustrating it is to see the PERFECT set piece and you either can't take it with you or it is impractical to do so...This is a happy compromise.

to Cyberman, you listen. His idea is the best way to go. It will look as realistic as a real tree, IF YOU ARE ABLE TO SCULPT.
