Yale and ERA Tardis Key Research (Info for the 1963-present keys)

Re: Yale and ERA Tardis Key Research (Info for the 2005-present keys)

Got my Yale's in, they are very bronze-ish.

@Straker - So you can sand these & they stay the same color? Thanks.

That is strange. The ones I got are not that brassy:

Had to edit that, I grabbed the wrong picture link.

Third one over between the other old Yale and the ERA. The far left key is a straight brass and the keys you got look more like that in color. I wonder if they ran out of the more silvery colored keys. I've had them for a little while and they never darkened either. Sorry man, it's the same seller I used too.

As for sanding them, yeah mine stayed the same color I got them in. I haven't had a chance to take pics yet because we've been so busy at work and then of course Christmas and New Years.

Oh yeah yours is way more silver, huh that's a bummer. May have to look into dipping those. Have you done any pricing yet?

No, still looking into pricing nickle through some local places. As for the ones youhave I'd just look for some brass chain and jump rings, blank these and string them on the chains for...well I use mine for custom brass sonics and brass trimmed psychic paper wallet sets myself and they make neat gifts to Doctor Who fans in your life. In the mean time I'd try another seller with the 5 pin YALE blanks and see what you can find. There HAS to be someone with the more silver colored keys still. It is indeed a bummer that you got straight brass though.

OH! If you take a Dremel with a steel wire wheel to it at high speed and go in different directions it will scour the surface and add all this neat texture to it and make it look old too. Then you just chemically darken the brass.

I sent the guy an email asking if he could exchange them, we'll see.

Word of warning, they will probably act like you have two heads. XD I've learned from experience that people like lock and key sellers are very VERY pragmatic about this stuff any any thought of using a key for anything but opening a door and "Why do you care about if it's silver colored instead of brass? it opens the door, right?" is usually how they look at things XD

Oh yeah already been through all that just trying to find keys locally. They do look at you odd.

"A PROP REPLICA....of a KEY?!?! get the HELLOUTTAMYSHOPYOUNUT!" is usually how they look at me XD They ususally don't SAY that out loud though. Usually it's just trying to get them to get me what I want or cut the darn key that is the problem. XD Provide your own key and they don't know WHAT to do. Some places straight out refused to cut the key if they didn't sell it, even if i offer to pay them full price regardless. XD I found a place local to me that is within walking distance now though so it's all good but man, they really have no imagination sometimes.

Re: Yale and ERA Tardis Key Research (Info for the 2005-present keys)

Becoming a harder search than I thought. The eBay & Google's is failing me!:confused

Yeah and the only other seller on eBay right now sells them ten at a time but specifies that their on hand inventory will determine color and well, that's why I bought mine from the other seller that had them two at a time. XP That really sucks man. If i had know there would be a shortage I would have bought more than four but noooOOOOooooo they just had to go back to an actual Yale key in the show XD.

Emailed another guy on there that has a Yale that's pretty much identical except it's 6 pin & not 5. If I could even find an equivilant JMA in silver nickle I'd be cool with that since it'll be sanded anyways.

Oh yeah & that seller emailed me back saying only genuine YALE's are bronze, silver ones are imitations, whatever that means. :rolleyes

Yeah he's an idiot since he sold me the silver colored key. XD And they use the same casting mold so it sounds like he's just covering his butt trying to make you not insist on returning your purchase and is COMPLETELY unaware that he sold me the more silvery colored alloy keys and is probably hoping you don't know better.

Oh well, this other guy I'm emailing may show promise, guess I'll take the other ones & make brown leather psychic paper wallets to go with them. :lol

I use a smaller ID wallet and brass trim corners to match the keys personally. Then I can use whatever color leather I want. XD Currently I use black.

Re: Yale and ERA Tardis Key Research (Info for the 2005-present keys)

Well we try to be. XD

Anyhow, keys just arrived today. Here's one quick and dirty comparison.

I think we found the key we're looking for guys. This is the CI-DL key made by JMA.

Received the Silca key from the guy who wouldn't sell ya the blanks for the Sally Sparrow un-blanked.

Back of the key has a YA/1E on the back.

Well now we have one of the model numbers to go by. That will make the search easier. It's very close. Too bad that one show is so long. Under the wrong lighting conditions it's hard to ell how close we are. it LOOKS like the two channels running the length of the key are stopping before they get to the waffle pattern in the screen still but it looks really close. I'm going to use that number to cross reference with other keys Silca makes and see what I can find but that does give me a better starting point. Have you tried putting in a lock and see if the key slides in easily?

Yeah & that's the one thing that was throwing me off with the JMA cuz it haz a polygonal thingy at the base of the head that the actual screenshot looks like it dosen't but with the lighting of the screenshot hard to say where the actual channel of the key stops.

Yeah, at this point we may just get "close" but not exact.
