Yale and ERA Tardis Key Research (Info for the 1963-present keys)

Re: Yale and ERA Tardis Key Research (Info for the 2005-present keys)

Yup! It will have a very slight brassy tone to it but not too bad. I suspect that's what they're using basically.

Cool good to know, thanks. Personally I think they went with it because Moff wanted to get things more Classic looking. Classic styled TARDIS, which had a big box on the back of the door which I expect we will see a classic styled phone in an upcoming episode (must check that one Pond Life to see where his phone is coming from there), new titles which people keep saying remind them of Tom Baker, so the classic key fits his look.

And just for completion sake here is the new key which Straker believes is the Yale Y1 key:

Well yes, classic but also easy to blank and not need any plating at all. The reasons for the change to the Y1 styled keys keep piling up actually. In the end I'm thinking I'll go ERA for 9, Blanked and plated Silca/JMA for 10 and blanked and polished Yale Y1 for 11. Nice little bit of diversity for the modern Doctor's Each wit their won unique keys and never mind the bleed through from season to season. XD

Re: Yale and ERA Tardis Key Research (Info for the 2005-present keys)

That's exactly how my collection is now. Only with a Yale alternative in the place of my 11 until my new keys come in to replace it. I figured it made the most sense as they all now truly have their own keys. In fact it makes me want to find a few more older Yale keys like the my original one, a friend gave me to his own police box, to stand in for the 2nd, 5th and 6th Doctor's as they are the only ones I don't have a key to represent them. Well a key of their own. Of course my original Yale key works for them all, but to display I'd like more.

For my 5th, 6th and 7th Yale keys I kept one of the new Y1's I got for that and blanked the other for 11 though I need to polish it soon. Luckily the alloy is softer so hand sanding is a LOT easier. We never did get a good look at the 80's Yale keys so I figure one of those is a good stand in XD

Re: Yale and ERA Tardis Key Research (Info for the 2005-present keys)

BTW, I'm looking into Nickle plating first. Figured it would be a good start as it will be tougher. Most research I have says that five months at best for the rhodium plating...but there seems to be a question if it will last longer on a harder metal than gold and if not being constantly exposed to hands and acids from sweat will make it last longer. XD I'm looking into a place not too far from me for Nickle instead.

Re: Yale and ERA Tardis Key Research (Info for the 2005-present keys)

Nickel is where I am starting as well. I felt it would be stronger for a while.

I know he uses the key in Cave but can't recall if it is a clear shot or not. I have no problem leaving it with a logo as my classic Yale has a logo on it still, but I did notice that Pertwee's key in Spearhead is blanked. But my old Yale key was a gift from a friend so I don't want to blank it.

I don't believe the Spearhead key was blanked. They seemed to only show the back of it but the ridge and even the writing above the hole are there, it's just low res from old film:

But again, they only ever show that side of it.

Re: Yale and ERA Tardis Key Research (Info for the 2005-present keys)

Yeah I had thought only the one side was blanked as that was the only one they showed and the key matches mine exactly aside from the fact that mine seems to have more writing on the back side. I figured it was a New Series ERA thing where the back was blank enough to use, but as my classic key is not brass I thought they may have sanded the words off. Like I said mine seems to have more writing. I have seen the ridges you are talking about but couldn't make out the writing on it, till now. At least the line where writing could be. However this will be easier to tell next year when this story becomes the only one of the classics to get a blu ray release.

I wish we had access to the photos taken during Hartnell's era. Some of the shots they show of Marco Polo show the key but the online versions are far too small. I'd love to see the original pictures.

the writing seems to vary per key. Mine even has a letter E stamped on it and says Made in the USA but the UK versions say Made in Great Britain on them.

Some even have Yale on the back side. Most of my examples are relatively blank on the back. I doubt though that the Blue Ray will up the resolution by much seeing as how the show was filmed in pretty low res and well, they do sometimes screw up Blueray transfers. The DVD version of the remake of Night of the Living Dead is actually clearer than the Blueray version. Terrible. Hopefully the BBC won't screw that up though.

This was the only story shot entirely on film which is why it's getting a blu ray release. It make clear things up enough to get an idea at least. The back of my Yale key is different to yours. More words. It's an old key though so I wonder now when from. But yours does seem to be spot on aside from the USA bit I'm sure. Nice find.

What kind of chain did you guys use to make Rose's key? Would love to make one for a friend as a gift for her.

I think I have one of the keys with more words on it too. There's several variations I found during my hunt. That was the one I matched up to th closest minus the E stamp and that it's made in USA instead of GB.

Thanks for this link! Just ordered some.

You got it!

Oh, well I used a curb chain from Lowes in a pack that had a lobster claw on one end for your belt loop and a split ring on the other end. I can't find a picture of the set up but I got it right in the key department. They sell for like $1.50 and the reason you want that is because the ends each have one link that is bigger on it that you need for the bar in the D shackle to fit through. You could use a larger gauge chain over all but if you do it will ruin the look so this is the best item to get to make it.

I just grabbed a dog choker chain from the pet store & snipped of the metal loops at the end.

You could do that too. Most of the ones of that that I found were too thick though. The chain at Lowe's is pretty nice.

Ever considered making a sterling silver version for a friend?
