Yale and ERA Tardis Key Research (Info for the 1963-present keys)

Holy information overload, Batman! All I wanted was a key to go with my other Dr. Who props. :lol Of course its never that simple.

We shall see, most of the listings I saw the keys were in rough shape. The one I grabbed looked to be the best that would clean up.

Very nice find! Not perfect but it works well enough I think. I plan on using white hemp cord for my Davison if only because it has a nice smooth look to it. We'll see how well that works out, lol.

Yup! It's been an exhaustive effort to find keys on this thread. We've found several brands that make excellent blanks for the Tennant and Smith keys, ERA's and obscurities as well as some excellent Yale keys and informationa bout what the keys are made of and tones of metal coloring. Add to that the chains and efforts to share info on the perception filter keys and you have a small wealth of info on a Tardis key type that most people over look in favor of the "special" keys that Pertwee, Baker, McCoy and McGann used. Shame really as matching these keys can be just as fun and rewarding if not outright diffucult, lol.

I need to find a weekend to work on mine some more.. have everything just need free time to put together.

Lol, I just need to find SOMEONE to plate the damn keys, lol. I have electronics modules for the tanand blue resistors done but I don't want to attach them to a key unless it's plated in...SOMETHING. Nickle, chrome, something.

Not have any luck with that?

No. 9_9 I've contacted several companies that specialize in nickle plating and got zero response. It seems that nobody is really rather interested in plating a few measly keys regardless of it being "No job too small" sort of thing.

Well that sucks.

Yeah I think you can an at home plating kit for a decent price online. I know I've seen them in the past. Its more like electroplating but it should work.

It is electroplating. You can do it with nickel chloride solution, a battery, a couple of wires, and a stainless-steel spoon. Here's one I did for my Police Box -- this key was a very reddish brassy colour to start with.

I actually wore down the plating afterward on this one to make it look older, but you can have the plating as thick as you like.

Urf, any one have any idea where I could get some ERA key blanks?
I tried Ebay and contacting someone who sells ERA locks and such, and there are no blanks.
Anywhere.
So yeah, any site in particular now a days where one can get an ERA blank?
P.S. I have looked through the thread, but not all of the links work, or they're for Yale keys mostly

To get my ERA keys cut I contacted ERA Security themselves. I sent them one of my keys and they cut me a few. I suppose you could try to buy blanks directly from them as well.

I'm actually waiting on an order of tan hemp to com in for my Sally Sparrow key. I used Jute on my perception Filter key and noticed that hers was very different. Looks quite a lot like a thinner Hemp I had found. Hadn't considered white hemp for Davison though. Not a bad idea. So long as it twists like his does in Black Orchid.

It probably will if you give it a little twist before you tie it.

BTW, I got 50 of these coming:

Y1 Yale blanks, plated in nickle and almost entirely blank aside from a tiny Y1 on one side.

They're very nice. Every since getting the ERA keys I've actually wanted a key with the same blank pattern on both sides like this. The Y1 wouldn't bother me at all really. If it's had one shoulder I'd happily use it as a Davison key myself, but with two it's still a very nice key.

Actually, It would be a good Colin Baker key to add variety.

Well I'll gladly sell any to you guys if you want them. I'll certainly have PLENTY of them, lol.

I could definitely use one or two. I'm too big on being superaccurate most of the time. I just need a couple keys for my display, one to make in to a perception filter key.
