X-Wing Madness. Flying at last!

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

You dont need the Sherman piece either Guy, not for this bird.

These builds are just getting more and more esoteric. :)

Pictures of Red 3 on display appear to show it with the "toilet seat" (as Jay calls it) missing. The Art of Star Wars picture shows it with the standard plug, but, the paint on the plug is very different, suggesting that it's not Red 3's regular plug. In the movie, during the "Lock S-foils" shot, there's too much glow from the engines and the resolution is too low to really tell one way or the other. That shot's also in the Star Wars Technical manual, but I don't know what I've done with my copy, so I can't say whether it's easier to tell from that or not. Just from looking at the movie, I'd say that the fact that the pattern of shadow looks exactly the same as Red 5, behind it, suggests that Red 3 had a regular plug during shooting.

Also, although this is a terrible low rez picture, it looks as though the noseblock is straight across the back rather than v-shaped:

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

The great butt plug debate, I love it. It seems we all have different ref stuff. Dont panic, I'm just going from what I have. If its wrong then so are ILM as they put it there :lol. Remember its not an all singing all dancing build, just my little RED 3 ahhhhhhhh.

But it is taking over my life, must remember to eat soon. The weathering is so complex on this bird that some of my panel decisions may seem a but weird, all in good time, but I dont know if I'll get her finished before I go, I just found out I'm working nearly all next week:cry

this will take more than all I know to get it even close to the SS model.......

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

Guy, that looks fantastic to me so far. Red 3 was one beat up prop, you can see her covered in motor tool scratches and dings, break out ya Dremel bro lol. Im loving this build up!

Thanks Lee, I'm really trying my best with this one. Jason thanks for that I was starting to think people thought I was mad :lol

Wow I thought mixing the green was hard, just done the blue for the cockpit......yikes
Its really hard to give Tamiya color's a pastel look to them.

Quite blue at the mo but weathering will dull it down.

You still using Tamiya paints Guy? There pretty good for getting the cockpit blue TBH.
Yep still think the green looks good, even better when weathering and misting hits it.
Thanks for posting that Jason :) Im still gawping at her, all that painting and now you have to go beat her up lol.
I reckon your going to top all previous paint jobs with this buddy!

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

This is great stuff. Lovely build.

Are you using an airbrush to do all the different shades etc. Its the only thing thats putting me off getting one of these, I just cant paint with an airbrush. I am a can and brush man, :lol Oh and what base colour did you use, looks like a dirty white in the photos.

Keep up the good work

Jon

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

Lee, I'm still using the Tam's bud.

Hi Jon, its all airbrush apart from a small amount of pastel work. The color's on the body are undercoat, matt black (can) Flat white (can) & then a mix of 3 different grey's with a warmer grey over the top. All the other color are custom mixed by me (never again).

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

Been working on some of the weathering tonight, bad I know, still got load's of airbrushing to do!!!!! My newest best tool is a putty rubber, this is great for removing pastel work, I can see this becoming the most used tool for this bird you can get some great blends with it.

This is just test stuff, I'm still a million miles from even finishing the basic pain t scheme.........

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

Yep...still looking good Guy, what is cool, and not many of you know, Guy doesnt get to do this kind of work often, his work schedule is hectic to say the least, and he spends weeks at a time away from home or any type of workbench...so to jump right in and do this kind of work...well its just so impressive!
This will be one amazing piece Guy...time to order your Red 3 plaque soon huh buddy!

Oh and meant to say, have you got a Panavise sorted for her? If not give me a shout bro, i may have a spare kicking about somewhere!

bests.....lee

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

It's looking really fantastic, i love to see all the builds but Red 3 really gets me going!!

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

Thanks Mike, I guess it's X-wing porn at the moment with all these V 3's starting to come together. I really hope to do your bird proud.

Very kind words Lee, thanks bud. I've not even thought about how to display her yet, I've still not heard fro my friend in Florida regarding the pana order. Maybe if you have an old one, that would be great?

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

Let me know where to send buddy...again...i really must log your addy down LOL, i suck at organisation lol.

I have one that will do the job bud, same type my Red 1 is mounted to?

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

Thanks Lee, I'll email it to you later bud.

I just broke the back of the thing that intimerdated me the most on this paint job. I've been putting this off & off & off, its the green on the under belly. Its so different to the topside & is very complex with the aging thats gone on to the prop. I have to say I'm pretty chuffed with it, & it was a lot simpler than I thought. You just think out the box, if you want it greener add yellow, ah ha.

Please bare in mind this is pre weathering & tie in. Aaaaaaaand relax!

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

Time to quit for the day..must be more social. I'm about 90% through the basic painting of the belly of the beast. This was my biggest worry...........few.

This is such a complex paint scheme it makes me think what the hell were they thinking when they painted this beauty? I'm glad they did though.

IMG_0023.jpg

Not bad for an afternoon's work. I've started doing something I've never done before, adding the pastel to the paint as its being sprayed. it gives it a real 3D texture & also helps it from coming off without a dullcoat. I'm always handling my work as I paint so grubby fingers & dust also have added to the look of this one. I also discovered the putty rubber can take a fine layer of paint off, great for over spray or a too heavy burst of the AB. Now I've tackled the belly I'm pretty sure I can get a really nice RED 3. I've still not seen any other RED 3 ANH builds & would love for people to post em here, it would be great to see where I'm going wrong?

This is REALLY looking GREAT Guy! :D

Richard (REL) did one for me in June of 2007 that was done with a V2 of Salzo's.

Richard's fantastic build was listed here for the longest time, but I guess after a year or so, dropped off and was pruned. :( ... bummer indeed.

Here are a few photos of the finished Salzo V2 beastie...

I am anxious to see your bird completed on the V3 kit! You will be the first! :D I am still not certain of what I may do with my V3 build, but do know it will be of the same scheme you are working on now. ;)

Question for ya Guy!
icon_smile.gif
You are obviously doing a wonderful job recreating the ANH Archived beastie. Of the archive photos you must be utilizing, it shows new (white) patch paneling under the front of the fuselage. I don't know when or why it was added, but it is definitely on it now.
icon_wink.gif
I had considered replicating it when Richard did my V2 Red 3, but decided against it because I just didn't like it! LOLOLOLOLOL... Plus... it just looked like crud! So... finally to my question...LOLOLOL... are you going to re-create this oddity on your V3 beastie?

Again... I am very much looking forward to viewing more of your fantastic work on this beauty!

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

Wow, thanks for posting these kurt, I never knew Rich had done a Red 3 for you, its just stunning. I cant stop looking at all the pics, he's really nailed the aged look of the prop. It makes it so much nicer when you can see other work as good as Rich's, I don't feel like I'm flying blind now.

Regarding the added panel below, I'm not telling you:lol

Its not going on my build, as I to deem it to be a repair that was necessary for ILM but not for a replica. Artistic license will be going there instead. There a few area's where bits have fallen off & left a unique unpainted area, I'm adding that piece back in, so its not going to be 100% accurate to what she looks like now, more of a hybrid of before & after?

Re: X-Wing Madness. Not here, just boring old fun!

Last update for the weekend, its going to be a go slow next week as I'm doing Reading & Leeds festival, to be honest between arguing with Metalica's crew & paint this Red 3 I'd rather be painting.

Just finished up the some of the blue AB stuff on the sides, its really weird as the prop has some very obvious airbrush streaks, It did seem wrong to copy these but It really pulls all the panels together? In my humble opinion.
