X-Men Cylcops Glasses

Hello this is my second post on here, I've been watching this board for quite some time and am glad to finally be able to join in on the fun. I collect mainly Men In Black replica weapons so everyone knows.

But anyways I'm wanting to do a total conversion of a pair of Oakley Juliets to the X-Men HERO prop style. I've seen a seller on ebay who sells the blinders which I could use and I already have the Ruby Quartz lenses covered. But I was trying to think of how to get the blinders blended with the frames of the glasses like in the movie. There wasn't any seems where the blinders started and the glasses ended in the movie but on propstore.com in the archive section under X-Men they have the pics of the HERO glasses. Anyone have any insight to help me out? I'd appriciate it a lot.

:thumbsup

here's the lenses that I came up with, let me know what you guys think.

very nice looking. The binders are made by a member here. Im sure he will chime in. Im not sure if he still makes the Juliet ones, but I know he just finished the Penny ones recently. What did you use for lenses?

wow, sweet shades. i don't see any yellow or purple on the lenses, so they can't be those hard to find oakley ones, so i'm pretty curious what they are. Anyway, if you want something real accurate for the bllinders, you'll have to probably mold them on the shades yourself.

Well, I had to do a lot of research and actually spoke to Mr. Spencer at oakley design, which finally made the recipe to make the lenses make sense. Theres several coatings needed to make them look all red without orange hues and yellow and purple etc. And believe it or not they're more expensive to make then the Oakley Ruby iridiums cost without the frames.

Nice Shades :thumbsup

Too bad the glasses themselves are so damn expensive :angry

Fixing the lenses to get the correct color should be about $10 depending on what you already own. All you need is future floor wax, acrylic paint in the correct color and a bowl. Tint the wax to a shade of ruby red you're happy with, dip the lenses and let dry. You can do multiple applications to get a darker color. FFW dries crystal clear with zero optical distortion.

Just a heads up for those of us who aren't millionaires.

Definatelly interested in hearing about a new way to do it besides the FFW way.
I have done the FFW and it works really well, and if the lense material is right you can
actually just dip the lenses in straight transparent acrylic for the same kind of effect.

Your glasses look good but the red isn't deep enough yet.
The ones used for the film are UBER deep red and the mirror
keeps anything from showing thru. Looks like they might need one
or two more ruby layers of the process your using.

And what do you concider not that exspensive... Ruby direct from Oakley are only about 60.00
if I recall the quote they gave me a couple months back, but to get them on ebay which for some reason
makes them go for up to 150 if they are the X series. If you cantint your own for the same price or less
then they cost direct from oakley then thats definatelly a good thing

Been meaning to tint my MARS black idium lenses red for another project I am working on

Not sure what made you think they are seemless as you can clearly see that the blinders are added onto the frames
in this shot..

and
http://www.propstore.com/images/products/1...opsglasses4.jpg

but in order make the glasses look seemless you would need to attach the blinder permanently and them
obviouslly fill the seem, then repaint the entire frame. As the original coloring is actually from an exposion
as I recall it being defined, your not going to be able to get it to 100%

so, you'll have to settle for 99%

repainting the frames with EM pigment will give you same finish as whats on the glasses
and the visor

I'm out o the county at the moment but when I am back I can post a pic of my visor which
I painted up and it looks spot on to the original using that same process

just a matter of mixing your finish properlly. as usual

nice to see this subject turn up again
you would think with the new film oakley would have done another
release of the ruby red penny, but guess not
same goes for MR releasing the Visor.....

ooh, and don't forget that warning they said about that if the lenses are to red that it can screw with your vision and give you headaches

need an optomitrist to explain that one though, of why if you cut out or add red orr something that you get headaches~

Beautiful work on the shades and great idea on tinting the lenses.

Does anyone know where I might find a pair of the replica pennys?

the fake oakleys are pretty much sold out everywhere... just google fake oakleys pennys and it should turn up a couple of places.

Unfortunately, every google link I have tried does not have them :(

Those lenses were died pretty red. And if you look closley in X-2 you can see Cyclop's eyes thru the lenses, especially in X-3 when the sun if shining thru them. I don' know why everyone thinks that the lenses are not transperant at all, I can see thru them in several shots.

I emailed the seller of those side-blinders on ebay but unfortunatley they never responded to any of my emails...

Anyways, where is that paint available your talking about that would be good to use on the glasses once the blinders are added on? Thanks.

Here's a pic of the inside color:

p.s. what exactly is the EW pigment? lol sorry if that's a dumb question :confused

EM Pigments

these are standard powder coloring pigments used in the FX and just about everywhere else
when you need the metal look

your cell phone case is probably painted up with some paint that has EM in it

EM is only availible to industrial industires so its not something you can get off the shelve.
I went a bunch of bull 2 years ago getting a bunch for some projects we did

I would suggest trying a local paint andbody to see if they could sell you some, you won't need more
then about a table spoon of it.

if you can't find it after looking hard locally for it email me and I might be able to help

his eyes show thru now and then but for the most part they are well hidden, and in three
you can really see that the inside is as red as the outside of the lense like in your photos

for the project I am working on I need the red to be much much deeper, but if it restricts vision
I am going to accept that as its for a more statc sculpture the it is a wearable version

well if you can sculpt at all I would suggest making your own as they aren't to hard to do and could
be made out o supersculpty or epoxy clay which makes it sandable and paintable incase yu only wanted to make 1 set, and then you can also make it fit mainly your facials features for the perfect fit

So will you be able to detail out for us the process you used to make yours red or will that be a secretive process???

Actually the process just involves adding the coatings on in the right order. The shade of red really depends on how long the optomitrist leaves the lenses soaking for in the red die. And yes they are hard on your eyes but I never got any headaches from wearing them, the most they did was make stoplights dissapear.

I actually just want a set that's the same proportions as the movie ones, I bought the frames specifically to convert into the hero prop style. I'm not good with sculpting things like that or else I'd try. Thanks man for your help.

Quick question, I have some sculpting experience and all but I don't know if it'd be quickly enough done with epoxy clay. I have some Super Sculpey but the thing is I'd have to bake it onto the frame to have it keep it's shape. Is that possible without ruining the glasses?

And another thing is on the bottom of the frames is where they open to insert the lenses. On the pair Oakley made that I had for a short while the blinders covered that area but were NOT attached at that spot, they just had a thin line close enough to block the light. Anyways anyone know any way to replicate that with it retaining it's shape?

Guntah Kela makes the bracers for it
[/b]

I've heard he is one sexy *******.

I make the blinders for both Juliets and Penny. The only way to attach any blinders to Oakleys, seam-free, is by permanetly glueing them to the x-metal frames, filling-up the seams, sanding them off smooth, and repainthing it all. Doing this would limit the use of your Oakleys. You won't be able to close the frame's arms anymore. They will stay open permanently. Any blinder pair, finished, is $112.00 shipped.
