X-Men 2 Carphone

I'm thinking about ordering the center pieces in "black detail plastic" and the side pieces and top/bottom in "white strong and flexible polished" from Shapeways...any opinions from guys who have already ordered theirs?

As I understand it so I can copy this to mine ( which I will be taking from the JayBible design @ shapeways, thanks defiant!) I will be ordering come Feburary 1st. The charge coils just add distance to the "reception" of the Blue Tooth, correct?

Is the JayBible design the one that was found to be slightly too large in dimensions?

I think that was a previous version. The one that's on Shapeways now is the third design, if I'm not mistaken. I'm going to be ordering mine soon, as well, and I'm going to try my hand at applying metal foil for the brushed aluminum parts. I'll post pics once that's done. I'm going to just do this one as a static piece, but I know that TSFG is still working on a fully functional one that's spring loaded with Bluetooth...

no, this will charge the blue tooth when it is in the housing. it will be a cordless charger. working the same way the charge pads do for cordless chargers.

I tried the metal foil approach, I had little luck with that method. I will be going with a buffed aluminum model paint approach where as you buff it out them more it will shine. I will spray one of my static pieces and post pics when I am done.

Yep its up to version 3 now. Size should be good. Is there any changes you guys would like me to make to the model?.. I should have a bit of free time on friday to get a bit done.

on this version 3 are the upper and lower pieces one or two pieces, it would be best in two so that inserting the electronics would be easier. Have worked any at all with the locking mech. ?

Argh..I wrote out a load of detailed stuff on the design and locking mech...and i lost it..****.

Anyway..to summarize: I can make this in more parts if ye guys are willing to pay a little more. I can split the top and bottom in 2 and also the middle can be
divided up into each colour and assembled. I will throw up a quick design for the lock asap. Probably gonna use spring steel instead of a compression spring..
Also you guys will need an M2.5 or M3 Tap for the bolts.. printing wont be able to put in the threads.

Oh! Nice. I might have to wait for version 3 to be ready then. I'm interested and curious to see what you have in store for the mechanics of the spring steel vice the coils.

The more I look at it the more i think coils would be easier...i just dont know if I can get strong enough ones that small..even 5mm diameter would
be pushing it. I will sketch out my idea and we can figure something out. The biggest sticking point at the moment is where to place the opening button.
with it on the side bottom it makes the release mechanism big an possibly weak. Is there a possibility we can move it?..to the front middle button maybe? Or is prop accuracy a must?

Definitely wait for the next version, I will be changed quite a bit of the middle and making the top and bottom in 2 pieces.

It's funny, before I found this thread and the detailed close up pics of the phone, I had thought that it opened by squeezing on the two black side pieces, not a small button on the side (actually, IIRC, that was the design originally discussed several pages back). If there was wiggle room it terms of accuracy, would that make it easier?

I believe the small button design was to keep it shut when in a pocket. It seems to me if the two side grips were push button, then I can easily see it accidentally actuating in mentioned pocket. I don't think it'd be easier for engineering sake. Another form that would be a failure point for function.
I'm all for keeping the switch small, discreet and accurate to the one seen on screen. I'm considering this design, MY Ultimate Geek Build. Not that I'm doing any of the actual CAD designing though (Thanks again Jay).

$48.00 Ordered today! Awaiting the awesomeness from Shapeways. Thank you to everyone that has contributed to bringing this to fruition. I will update everyone once it's arrived and assess the parts.
For those wondering I went with the Alumide option for all parts minus the middle push button in black(strong and flexible).

I'd like to find someone with a MakerBot or something like that so this could be done in ABS…I wonder why Shapeways doesn't offer it...
